PreviousRespawn will lower CoD's sales - Pachter Force Unleashed 2 progress is "phenomenal"  Next

Majority 'won't care' about Infinity Ward departures

Consumers won't shun future CoD games, says Pachter
The majority of games consumers won't care enough about the recent Infinity Ward departures to shun future Call of Duty games.

That's according to superstar games analyst, Michael Pachter, who says that while he anticipates that many gamers will recognize that West and Zampella are off the Modern Warfare franchise, most won't give a monkey's.

"The majority of consumers will either not know or will not care enough to shun future games," he said.

However, Pachter states that he does think that increased competition from ex-Infinity Ward bosses, West and Zampella's new EA-backed studio, Respawn will lower sales of Activision's future Call of Duty games.

At least seven ex-Infinity Ward employees are said to have joined the EA-backed studio.

Yesterday Activision admitted that more Infinity Ward employees will "probably" leave the studio - and may even join the other bailout designers at West and Zampella's studio.

"Respawn will lower CoD sales", says Pachter.

Then the very next news story, based on comments from the same person, says consumers won't shun CoD.

Brilliant!

well seeing as the last game was utter crap I think they accomplished that feat before they left.
buffig on 23 Apr '10
I agree, I think that most people will buy it for the product/gameplay and the name: COD or Call of Duty, I have a friend who will by any game that is a COD and after being informed about the issues with leaving main members of the IW development team and he said he will still buy their next game or at least see what its like before purchasing but he does want to keep a close eye on Respawn.

Superstar games analyst, Michael Pachter, was quoted today saying; 'Blah blah blah. BLAH BLAH BLAH. Blah blah blah. I'm a games analyst, don't you know. Pay attention to me! Blah blah blah.'

Insightful stuff.
zombiesinmyhead on 23 Apr '10
lets look at it this way. Guys like us that consider gaming are primary hobby may shun the next COD for whatever respawn come up with (so long as it's good)

But casual gamers that just likes playing COD will not.

It's sales may be effected but not by much. that is unless it's universally acknowledged to be utter s**te,

hoever i have a feeling that this years new Medal of Honour may give the new COD a serious run for its money anyway.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 23 Apr '10
MW2 was utter rubbish so i wont be paying for another COD game!!!!!

That made me chuckle as well, the world has gone Pachter mad Wink .

hopefully respawns new game can steal enough buzz away from IW to dent MW sales, without selling out themselves with another cheese-fest.

sadly it's all about the causal gamer. which doesn't bode well for a decent game.

and just as sadly, respawn will want a big blockbuster hit to rival MW just as much (or probably more) than they want to cater for "the fans". Confused

lets see.

"Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it." - GEORGE SANTAYANA

2002 - 2015Inc release 'Medal of Honor: Allied Assault' to critical acclaim.

2002 - Major 2015Inc employees leave to form Infinity Ward.

2003 - Infinity Ward releases first 'Call of Duty' to universal acclaim.

2004 - 2015Inc release 'Men of Valour', critics unimpressed, 2015 release no more titles.

2009 - Infinity Ward release "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2", Guiness Book of records recognizes it as the biggest selling entertainment product of all time (2010)

2010 - Major Infinity Ward employees leave to form Respawn Entertainment.....

I think we all know what happens next Razz

Sad thing is he is probably right .... There are too many dickhead chavs in this world who will buy future games regardless
originalbadboy on 23 Apr '10
I guess in time we will see. I would think if they are not released at the same time, it wont but if they are it all depends whether the game are the same thing or maybe they will be totally different. If you get my driftSmile

Pachter knows nothing.
KMakawa on 23 Apr '10
Does anyone even care about Patcher anymore? There are better game analysts out there that do the smart thing and don't try and get the spotlight by opening their mouths and contradicting themselves much like Patcher.

As an analyst myself he is a disgrace to our profession.
MdDam on 23 Apr '10
So this guy comes out and says something the world already knows, and he's actually considered a credible analyst? What exactly did he need to analyse to draw the most obvious conclusion in gaming right now?
theaface on 23 Apr '10
Pachter is a complete asshat.

They might not care about the people themselves, but when you point out to them that they're the people who designed and programmed the CoD4 engine as well as being the ones in charge of the overall game design, then I think they'll pay attention.

I'm interested to see where this puts the Modern Warfare branding. It obviously won't be the same without these guys, but Activision won't be finished milking it yet. But I want to see what new stuff they do now they're at EA.
Dajmin on 23 Apr '10
I never liked the COD games anyway.

They were the FPS equivalent of the EA Sports titles. Same game every year, with spruced up graphics, a few new weapons and a new number on the end of the title.

Definitely won't be shedding any tears over the demise of IW.
CyberByte on 23 Apr '10
The overpriced DLC is what finished COD / Activision for me. tut tut.

Patcher is quite right, hardcore gamers sure as hell didn't make MW2 sell that big. All the me too and casuals did that, the next CoD game will sell pretty well, but as long as marketing is good, Respawns first game should garner notoriety and people will see that. It's all about the games, the techniques will be shown in the gameplay. Also by the original MW guys on the box will definitely be a kicker.
SavageEvil on 23 Apr '10
Oh Hail Thee Mr Pachter
shine light upon us, in this difficult quandry
for we are simple folk, unable to wrap our minds around this complex and diverse array of facts
sumrandomgeezer on 23 Apr '10
Given the amount of people who bought MW2, I'd agree with this.
some people just go on namesake alone.
Nollog on 23 Apr '10
Well, staring past all the 'Pachter is a k**b' comments (all true, of course), the fact of the matter is that this time, he's right, and Wheresmymonkey was getting at the point.

The primary CoD audience (frat boys et al) certainly doesn't appreciate games in the same way that most of us do. They won't acknowledge that MW2 was a bit of a joke after the original, as long as they can keep 'pwnzring noobs'. There are a lot of people out there, some who I've seen post on this very site, who still think MW2 is the freaking Holy Grail. These kind of people don't give a damn about the quality of a game, they'll buy it purely off the CoD name.

Respawn will take the share of enthusiasts such as ourselves, but they'd need a Microsoft-esque marketing push to claim the core CoD audience.
Insidious on 24 Apr '10
WRONG i didnt buy into MW2 due to the price, offline game length ect. I still play cod4 online a fair bit but still love to drop into the single player.I might buy MW2 when it hits 20 quid but there's lots of great games out there that i would like and I now think the cod franchise will go the same way as tony hawks, die of repertition and gimmicks.

There's Michael Jackson who dangled his child over the edge of a balcony by the ankles - and then there's Activision. MJ got nuthin' on these guys.
