New Call Of Duty will 'broaden series' appeal'

Foxtrot. Alpha. We're going mainstream...
Remember the whispers of that third-person Call Of Duty game from Activision? The publisher's revealed that the title will "broaden" the appeal of the CoD series.

Read into that what you like, but when we hear the phrase "broaden", we think Wii Sports, Lips, Buzz!... not GRAW. Then again, surely you can't get too mainstream with war?

The title is being developed by San Francisco studio Sledgehammer and is due for release next year.

"Today, we have three studios working on Call of Duty," Activision COO Thomas Tippl told the LA Times last week. "We have Infinity Ward, which made Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Then we have Treyarch, which will be releasing a Call of Duty game in the fall of 2010. Treyarch also developed Call of Duty: World at War and Call of Duty 3.

"And, most recently, we've added Sledgehammer in the Bay Area. We haven't yet announced the content of their game, but it's going to be an innovative take that will further broaden the audience for Call of Duty."

File this under 'wait and see'.

Activision milking that COD teet again....

The Franchise is probably one of THE biggest names out there, it already has a broad series appeal.

They will probably package the next game in pink and call it "Call of duty: Pantene Warfare"
nottsville on 19 Apr '10
The game is huge! Dont fix what isn't broken!
ando37 on 19 Apr '10
How is CoD not mainstream already?

You wouldn't believe the number of non-gaming girls I see on FB saying they're playing it.
EthanWoods on 19 Apr '10
I find it hard to believe that you can broaden the appeal of a game about war. It will already shift around 10 million units, how many more do they want to sell?
I can't see them doing a single thing that would get me to purchase a COD game.
FASELI on 19 Apr '10
any body got the feeling that everywhere where they go they gona be seeing COD, how do you gather more appeal to something?

advertise even more of the sh*t out of it!!
bunneyo on 19 Apr '10
COD now with half size brighly coloured m 16 that allows you to shoot the nazis terrorist zombies in style on the bestest on rails shooter ever.

Also compatible with tony halks ride skateboard.

Activision are great at a taking a beloved franchise and running it into the ground.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 19 Apr '10
COD already has mainstream appeal... It appeals to the same type of gamer that literally only plays FIFA, NFS and now COD...
milky_joe on 19 Apr '10
All you guys have to do is make it work once again not some stupid plan abt integrating some crappy peripheral which I can say wouldn't be past them.
Sleepaphobic on 19 Apr '10
So the biggest selling piece of media of all time isn't mainstream enough for Activision?

Their sheer greed is astounding.

You know how you used to enjoy guitar hero before it was milked like a heavily lactating cow and everyone with any sense went to Rockband?

Prepare for more of the same....
placid ca5ual on 19 Apr '10
With the killstreak reward system already established, I'm not sure how they could water down the gameplay any further to make it appeal to a wider audience.

Maybe they'll just remove the shooting altogether and have you spawn with infinite air support...
Dazzaroonie on 19 Apr '10
I look forward to being able to discuss COD with my granny in the retirement village she lives in.
horngreen on 19 Apr '10
As others have said, how the f**k can COD be any MORE mainstream?

Watch them make a COD kart racing game with chibi versions of Soap and Price.

Ugh...
Orox on 19 Apr '10
are cvg going to report that marvel vs capcom 3 (sf4 graphics) was announced last week along with bionic commando rearmed 2?
dorian2011 on 19 Apr '10
Could somebody please tell me about this "Call of Duty" thing. I don't think I've ever heard of it.
The Kool Kid on 19 Apr '10
if cod goes to full time third person, im going to do something very bad...not sure what that is yet but be warned, i wil do something epic...actually dont count on anything.

The biggest mainstream disappointment ever - Modern Warfare 2

"We want to p**s off an even broader audience"
Focker420 on 19 Apr '10
I'm just gobsmacked by the greed of Activision. Whoever replies by saying "It is a business after all" needs their brain replacing. I also raise you the meme "Your argument is invalid..."

Anyway, as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words: http://imway2fat.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/really-skinny-cow.jpg

If it looks good i'll grab a preowned copy so none of the cash goes to those robbing bastards! It could be the best game ever to be honest but i'm dead against giving Activision another penny.
DazedandConfused on 19 Apr '10
Activision works out they have run out of idiots to sell to.
bazzatuk on 19 Apr '10
This would have been a good idea before they started milking it.I liked COD 4 , WaW and probably MW2, but no more cods for me for a while. Intresting idea, then you realise that there getting desperate
Nomad089 on 19 Apr '10
Soon Activision will be releasing a new CoD game every 6 months, although that 3 studios they talk about might soon become 2 as they will have to close down Infinity Ward following the exodus of talent down there.

Call of Duty 10 pro fisherman.
Pre order now to receive a bonus ghillie suit allowing you to stalk the enemy carp through reeds!
dangermou5e on 19 Apr '10
"File this under 'wait and see'."

No, file it under "This series is completely FUBAR." Unreal how Activision had the absolute biggest cash cow in entertainment in their hands and have managed to eff it up this bad.
Lloyd12 on 19 Apr '10
A third person CoD wouldnt be so bad really if they did it right. The Conflict series was third person and they were for the most part superb war games, it was more tactical and maybe that is what the developers are aiming for.

A stealthy, strategic CoD would be an interesting change of pace IMO, especially after the disappointing hypefest that was MW2.
bevoboro on 19 Apr '10
A more tactical (slower paced) COD would be good... and throw in a online level designer whilst your at it.

This would really give it some bang!
