PS3 gets 3D software update

New sorting options for Trophies arriving, too
Sony's new mandatory software update for PS3 will prepare the system to work with the firm's 3D Bravia TV.

Software Update 3.30 will also introduce some new sorting options within Trophies that Sony claims makes it easier to 'claim bragging rights' among your friends on PSN.

According to the Official EU PlayStation Blog, the update will include:

* Trophy enhancements - Now you can more easily sort trophies in the [Trophy Collection] and [Comparing Trophy] sections. Sorting can be done with [Trophy Collection] in the [Game Category] and also when comparing trophies with your friends in the [Friend Category]

* Trophy Folder (Title List) can be sorted by game name/ by title according to the date in which you earned your last trophy (ascending/descending)

* Add-on list (Group list) can be sorted by original/the date in which you earned your last trophy (ascending/descending)

* Trophy list can be sorted by original/trophy name/grade/date of obtaining the trophy (ascending/descending)

* In addition, this update preps the PS3 system for some upcoming new features, including 3D stereoscopic gaming, which is coming soon to PS3, in time for the launch of Sony's 3D BRAVIA TVs.

Which of you are getting a 3D TV this year readers? Tell us below...

am_gers2K8 on 22 Apr '10
nope i respect my eyes too much, i would get a tv with freeview hd built in though
adgr19 on 22 Apr '10
I seen in the Metro today that the new TV's from Samsung are going to be £1800 a pop with the glasses at £60 a go as well.

At these prices ill be waiting sometime before jumping on the 3D bandwagon, my TV isnt that old!
StonecoldMC on 22 Apr '10
Can't be bothered with 3D TV it will probably cost a package. I'm happy with my HD TV.
Solm on 22 Apr '10
Apparently things outside are in 3D. Maybe people should try that instead.

You don't need to wear silly-looking glasses out there either (although some people still choose to).

I only got a Bravia a few months ago grrr...and 18000 FFS! 3D gaming...humpf...thats going to be a long time before its affordable to Joe Normal not Joe Mr fancy wage packet....
skidpro on 22 Apr '10
There is already a price for a Sony 3D Bravia HD TV in its website: £1,999 and available for mid July. How long does it take for a TV to drop to a half price? 1-2 years? Well, I think I will still be playing 2D games for long time.
coleguilla on 22 Apr '10
I don't think i'm going to be jumping on the 3d gaming bandwagon quite yet. Not at those proces anyway. With any new tech ( such as 3D tellies) the current ones will more than likely be replaced with something much better in a couple years tops.

Are they silly-looking, though?

No 3D for me.

Apart from the prohibitive cost Shocked (I've not long had my 1080P TV) and lack of content at the moment, I'm not over-awed by the whole 3D thing.

I saw Avatar 3D and while I thoroughly enjoyed it, I'm not sure if 3D added anything to the experience. In fact, I found it to be somewhat distracting. In the real world I can choose what distance I focus (with help from my silly-looking glasses Wink ) - with 3D cinema/tv the focal distance is chosen for you, making it feel unnatural. It'll be interesting to see what Avatar is like in 2D on Bluray when it arrives this week.

I fear we are on a road to Better Than Life. Is that a good thing?
Kwaker76 on 22 Apr '10
They promised 1080p gaming, but the future is a 3D. Confused

Any HD TV that runs at more than 120hz refresh rate can do 3D. Yiou just need glasses and a receiver (for shutters)

Or polarised glasses (for sky).
Mark Hayhurst on 22 Apr '10
I went to a Panasonic roadshow for their new 3D telly recently and was very impressed. The image is crisp, smooth, and looks great - much better than the shoddy picture Avatar suffered from at times.

That said I also don't see the technology taking off. TV consumption isn't going to change (how many people do you know that watch telly intently these days? I can't really think of any), and filming in 3D is expensive.

I don't expect any of this generation of consoles to be able to handle 3D games either - the sets Panasonic had were running at 1080p, 120Hz - 60Hz directly to each eye thanks to the glasses turning on and off alternatively. I don't know of many games on the PS3 or 360 that can handle 1080p and push above 30Hz.

They had a 360 3D Avatar game playing on one of the sets and it looked less polished than games found on the previous generation of consoles.

I will buy one of Panasonic's TVs if I can afford it, plasma making a come back and spanking LED technology was a surprise, but the image quality really is lovely.
aj101 on 22 Apr '10
Think I'll wait a few days before downloading it in case sony have released faulty crap again.

Not sure that's true. TV's (HD or otherwise) can't utilize the polarized method of creating 3D imagery. If that were possible there wouldn't be any need to go to the expense of developing the shutter type technology. Also, even if you have a 120hz TV it wouldn't have the necessary technology built into it to alternate the images and sync with the glasses. You need a 3D Ready TV.

3d tv's will make you go blind, will ur brain be able to handle the affects after a long time...?? i used to get headache and my eyes would feel funny from the old skool 3d , so the new ones will be worse, i think i will wait to see how many people go blind or mad lol ,, and b4 you say anything , i have checked out the 3d tv in pubs with the 3d football, and yea it looks good, but half the time its not 3d, for those who have seen it in pubs know what im talking about.
darkstranger on 22 Apr '10
I enjoyed the 3D in Avatar, and would love to own a 3D TV - but not until they drop below £500.

I only have a 1280i TV, and with my FreeSat setup it is like living in a HD content desert. Can we honestly expect 3D TV to be anything more than a gimmick for many more years to come?

...I'm still p**sed that we don't have SmellyVision yet... I'd love a PS3 smelly update Laughing
Padua on 22 Apr '10
my HD tv cost me £1800 a few years back - so for me, in the market for a new tv soon i'll certainly consider getting one with 3D ability
anagi on 22 Apr '10
i used to get headache and my eyes would feel funny from the old skool 3d , so the new ones will be worse

Of course it'll be worse, because that's how things work, my tv is far worse than the black and white one i had in my bedroom as a kid and my ps3 is light years behind my spectrum.
You got a headache from the old 3d system because the colours were messed up and never completely in focus, the new system is far superior.
darbo on 22 Apr '10
There'll be genuine concerns over eyesight, I mean, how many people will be stuck in their houses with the curtians shut watching 3D porn all day? It'll be Day of the Triffids without the flesh eating plants.
starsail on 22 Apr '10
I DLed it this morning, didn't bother to check the trophies. Can safely say I'm not upgrading for at least 5 years, not convinced by it yet.
The Bossman on 22 Apr '10
rubbish update. "trophy features"?? organize them alphabetical, i would hardly call that a feature.. and omg, when they first made it organizable, y didnt they let us organize after the %??

obviously these guys who work at sony never use their PS3s, thats gotta b the explanation for these crappy updates.
User75 on 22 Apr '10
Hello yes, I just wanted to enquire about the prices of your tervs, and is it ready for the thurd.
Sinthetic on 22 Apr '10
Until they release a 3dtv that dosn't require wearig those awful glasses I'm not interested.
sonic_uk on 22 Apr '10
i watched 3D on one of them samsung tv's at the gadget show live the other week, it was a 50" one & the 3d effect was fantastic, you had to wear them glasses (£90-120) but they were very smart Cool

about £2300 for the 50" with two pairs of glasses i was told, i'm going to wait till later on in the year, but i'm defiantly going to be getting one Razz
alan666 on 22 Apr '10
I will play the wait and see game before I jump in with both feet.

I have still yet to get a HDTV so I suppose in some ways this is a plus with these 3DTV's coming out.

I would not pay over £300 for a TV I don't care what it does. Rolling Eyes
wwinterj on 22 Apr '10
People getting 3D TVs are Veeeery rich
hi0marc on 22 Apr '10
