Crysis 2 on console 'looked impossible'

Crytek says multi-platform development benefited PC version
Crytek has told CVG that development of Crysis 2 for PS3 and 360 "looked impossible" at various points during its creation - but that the firm overcame these difficulties to create a "masterpiece" across three formats.

The title is due for release on PC, PS3 and 360 later this year - but its critically lauded predecessor didn't arrive on console.

When we asked Crytek CEO Cervat Yerli why the first game wasn't available for 360 and PS3 but the new game is, he said:

"I think back then, we would have been limited with our knowledge of 3D and experience with CryEngine. Today, we have much more experience with the technology and the bleeding edge experience on PC helped us to trickle down the engine, step-by-step.

"So we were looking at every high-end feature and said, how can we bring this to console? I said to our technology guys, we have no choice. It has to come. How do we do it? Instead of telling me which ones you can and can't do, whenever it looked impossible, I said find another solution. So that forced a lot of optimisation and rethinking. Ultimately, that made for an even better PC title."

Speaking in our exclusive interview, Yerli labelled the new title a "creative masterpiece of New York" and tackled the question of which console version looks the sweetest.

The studio previously revealed that it overcame problems squeezing the game's massive CryEngine 3 onto console.

However, it went on to claim that the game's graphics were the best you'd ever see on console - something CVG's own experience of the Xbox 360 version backed up.

I think this guys comes across as a bit of a bell end. I'm assuming it's the same guy that was very vocal around the release of the original crysis? There's an arrogance to him like his work is untouchable and hugely underappreciated. First it was his Crysis isn't selling as well as modern warfare 4 moan. Then no one "understands" the aliens rant, then "If it wasn't for pirates" crysis would have sold over 10 million. It was his decision for the drm on warhead to, not EA's, they made that clear. Lost sales there you muppet.

Anyway I just played through crysis again and man I love it. My biggest fear with 2 is that it won't have the open ended levels that made the original so great. Some parts are endlessly replayable and offer many different ways to attack. Keeps things fresh and interesting. Don't know
how they will manage that in the closed city enviroments. Also now it will just look like every other shooter. Still, im holding out hope for it

A 'masterpiece' ! Rolling Eyes

I've lost count at the amount of Crysis news stories in the last couple of weeks.

The game better be good to warrant this amount of coverage.

Basically you did what your critics said you should have done for Crysis on the PC in the first place: optimised the friggin engine. No consoles required.

runadumb, that is my main worry right now, but I think there will be large areas with a lot of detail and hidden things to discover, plus that "vertical sandbox" could be interesting

For everyone complaining that Crytek talks too much, they talk as much as any other dev, but CVG seems to be giving them a lot of space here...

Ok, Crysis 2 Hype Train. You've told me that:
Killzone 2 has bad writing
Uncharted 2 is an interactive movie
MW2 is crap
PC and consoles will look identical
PS3 and 360 will look identical
PC will look a bit better than console
PS3 will look a bit better than 360
Game will have unbelievable graphics.

OK! Release the game, and I'll read some reviews!

I wish that Crytec would shut the f**k up, they are boring the hell outta everyone with constant spouting of s**t.
galvatron81 on 19 Apr '10
Shame the original never made it across then. Still, I'll reserve judgement on Crysis 2 until I actually play it.

You want to blame someone for all the Crysis stories?
Blame CVG.
They keep printing them. Press Releases come out every day...they just seem to enjoy posting the ones that annoy people the most.
It gives them something to do, and the odd chuckle here and there. You can't really fault them for that. Why do you think they report on the idiotic rubbish that comes from the mainline press?
jazzy_p on 19 Apr '10
yeah i agree with the statement above. Don't have a go at crytek, they have opinions same as every other developer, they aren't the one publishing a new article about it every darn day.
I'm a fan of cryteks work since FarCry and i'm looking forward to the game, but yes, the articles are becoming somewhat overwhelming now =|

It is fine for developers to have an opinion just not 15 opinions in like 3 days, they also seem to despise working on consoles so i stick to my original comment.

Although u do have a point about CVG posting every little tidbit of news/crap they spout.
