PlayStation users are the most connected console gamers in the US according to a recent study by The Diffusion Group.
The PlayStation 3 has the most amount of users with broadband connections at 78 percent, Xbox 360 gamers follow with 73 percent and Wii users trail with 54 percent.
Director of research Michael Greeson believed that such high levels of connectivity were could be accounted for by a demand for media video rather than gaming itself.
"Today's game consoles are increasingly connected to the internet, not just to enhance their gaming experience but to access the growing variety of online media-video," he said.
i have two for my PS3(UK and US)..and the same for the 360,not wanting to start any s**t,but i use my 360 most..i would say definitely everyday,PS3 two or three times a week, but that's just me
and before anyone says its because PSN is free, don't forget that silver XBL users don't pay just to be connected,so that should of been taken into account,we are not talking online gaming, just connected
ha-ha well in, I bet this thread has a 50+ comments section by midday... Who really cares, I love games,I have both consoles, the 360 is so fluid on-line in every way, the Ps3 has come on leaps and bounds in the last year and will only continue to do so. I don't really care who wins the console war, as far as I can see we do..... Some days it feel great to be a gamer
@MrBuffalo I think that they can tell if you have multiple accounts, as the IP address attached to your connection remains the same, unless you are moving from house to house. So even if you have JP, US, GB and HK, you'll still be recognized as one user.
They should reword that as households, unless you have multiple PS3's in use. Free online is great, but I think PS3 can attribute it's online usage to it's web browser, 360 doesn't have one.
This news article is kind of misleading and confused.
The problem with statistics is that a headline like 'PS3 is the most connected console' seems to imply more users are connected to PSN, slightly different from 'PS3 has the highest proportion of users with a connection' which is what the article seems to suggest is the true source:
"The PlayStation 3 has the most amount of users with broadband connections at 78 percent, Xbox 360 gamers follow with 73 percent"
The percentages are of owners of those consoles, not of the overall marketplace.
Depending on the number of households with either console (i.e. if there were twice as many Xbox360s), that proportion could mean a higher number of users were connected to Xbox live. Last I heard there were more 360s in the US.
Without the true numbers, it's difficult to find any relevant meaning in the article, other than that more PS3 owners connect to the internet (as a proportion).
People are so thick, WE are the winners of the console war. Companies constantly competing to get us to buy their products. The brown nosing pawns of this world are the fanboys that don't seem to understand this basic fact. Companies competing by creating bigger and better exclusive IPs only serve to better our lives as gamers.
The US has 360 in the lead so 73% of 360 users is probably more users than PS3s 78%.
But, the article was aiming to suggest that out of users on each owned console, PS3 has more online enabled users. Still a pretty good indication of the way the future is going...DD.
knowing you need to pay for online with the 360, its no surprise that it is bought more as a single player console compared to the ps3.
i don't believe that at all. Live is a far more integrated service compared to PSN. Not that i care particularly as i use both, but i have never played an online game on my PS3. not having a headset doesn't help. demos, vidzone and the occasional iplayer usage is what i go online for. never used Home either.

the facts are in your face.
a bigger percentage of 360 users are using it for single player only if they haven't connected it online.

it never mentions people playing games, just connected to the internet. there could be a massive percentage of ps3 users who have connected to psn then done sweet f a since. read the article again.
I guess the reason is because the 360 is the cheaper one, therefore it's the most likely to be bought for offline gaming. And the fact that PSN is free.
well i read the article and was intrigued if it was misleading if read wrong.
i own a copy of mw2 for my 360 (think what you may of the game, i havent played it for ages if that makes me a better person), and my workmate owns it for his ps3, so i got him to text me when he went online (22.18 ) how many players were online on mw2 and how many of those were in playlists, he text me 441,502 online playing mw2 of which 348,104 were in playlists on the ps3, i put it on my 360 and there was 618,322 online of which 508,335 were in playlists.
so, by my reckoning 79% of people playing it on the ps3 were playing multiplayer online and 82% of the people playing mw2 on the 360 were playing multiplayer online... so both pretty close really...
p.s- chose mw2 cos its the biggest selling cross platform game on both consoles that you can see how many players are online at any one time so would make for an unbiased result.
The PS3 is being used more online to stream movies and music to the TV and amplifiers, a reason many use it over there own PC connection. Hell, strap your PS3 to a DVD recorder and record the content, put the DVD into a laptop and burn copies (remember folks, legally).
Many also connect iPS3 to the Life application and leave it running to donate processing power as well as others loogging onto Home.
I think if the percentage was multiplayer gaming then the Xbox 360 would have the higher percentage but it goes to show that in many ways PSN offers so much more than Live for entertainment values as well as offering a solid online gaming experience alternative to subscription to Live.
I still laugh at those who pretend to own a PS3 and claim to have it online 2 or 3 times a week while their beloved Xbox is played on a daily basis, althogh I suppose if you're getting ripped off by MS for a lesser service, then you may as well make the most of it.

that was a really good post and had good points made, why ruin it with a bitter comment at the end????
