Legendary Nintendo designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, has pointed out that since technology is now equally available for most manufacturers, Nintendo will be looking at how they use technology to stand out from the crowd.
"In the next generation of hardware, the challenge is how unique and different a product Nintendo is able to make," he said. "Whether that be Wii HD, Wii 2 or an entirely new console, I am not in a position to say at this point."
"The only thing I can say is that technology is available to all equally today, and how we decide to make use of that technology and in what format is what will make our hardware unique in comparison to the hardware from other manufacturers."
"I think that in the next generation of hardware, the challenge is how unique and different a product Nintendo is able to make."
What do you think? Do consoles rely on what people do with them rather than the technology that's inside them?
Just imagine Mario Galaxy with God of War 3 style polish, dynamic goomba stomping that results in their juice going all over Mazza and his overalls! Now that will be different enough for Wii 2!
He's exactly right, because games aren't going to help them, no matter how good.
As evidenced by the attach rate for the Wii, it's audience doesn't want games, it wants gimmicks. Unless they can find something that will excite the casuals as much as motion control did with the Wii, they're finished. They'll have lost both sets of customers.
If Nintendo stick to their previous models, then the next machine wont be too different. Nes - Innovation Snes - Evolution N64 - Innovation GC - Evolution Wii - Innovation.
I think the next console from nintendo might feature a visor of some sort considering they purchased a load of them from a company quite a while ago for R&D.
