God of War 3 was 'bigger at alpha stage'

Team had to make big cuts before game's release
God of War 3 was actually bigger during the alpha stages of production, director Stig Asmussen has revealed.

Speaking in an interview with Destructoid, Asmussen admitted that God of War III had to be substantially cut before release.

"It was around Alpha, and it was bigger," he said. "It was too big, and it wasn't as tight as it could possibly be. And we had to cut some things out, just to make sure that we got the quality across the board."

Included in the pieces left on the cutting room floor were extra areas and even complete boss levels.

"We had a creature named Argus who had a hundred eyes, and he was a creature that was designed to have use the Helios head to defeat him," said Asmussen. "You had to make him close his eyes, and he'd get blinded. You couldn't defeat him unless he's blind, and then he'd go into this kind of blind rage, and you had to fight him. He was fun. It was fun."

"[Argus] was going to be another surprise thing. You know how we had kind of secrets where you could use the Helios head to find them? We were going to have those secrets paced out so you find four or five of those, and you'd get a chest in each one.

"Then in one, we were going to have basically a reveal where you'd expect to see a chest there -- setting up expectations and then breaking it -- and out of the darkness this Argus would leap out, and you'd have to fight him."

If you haven't played this behemoth of a game yet, read our God of War 3 review to get an idea of just how massive it is. It's big.

Come on Forge88, it was a joke, albeit a poor one (it is Monday morning after all) Laughing .
StonecoldMC on 12 Apr '10
Yeah Forge88 lighten up Very Happy

StonecoldMC's comment brought a smile on my face, at least Cool

That said, just bring out the stuff as DLC, we'll take it no questions asked ... apart from pricing that is Smile

GOW 3 did feel a bit slim at the waist line. Guess this explains why.
bagofbones on 12 Apr '10
haha fellas its snd am kiddin myself.Ay just be thankful its me and not Bellboy ;
Forge88 on 12 Apr '10
It did seem over pretty quickly, then again that could be explained becasue i couldn't put it down untill i'd finished it.

Fantastic finale if you ask me. Hope we get to see the epilogue that was cut as dlc though. Might help clear up the ending a little bit.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 12 Apr '10
They said it wasnt tight which probably means they felt it wasnt balanced and felt over inflated but I suspect "The Lost Chapters" DLC looming ...

I'm playing (enduring?) MGS4 at the moment which proves beyond doubt "less is more". God of War 3 played great and if there is more content to come I would be happy to pay for it. I am glad they didn't clutter up the finally released game with over-indulgence.

I can't think of an ending to a game that I enjoyed as much .. it even pipped Uncharted 2's finale for me.

I 100%'d GoW3 yesterday Very Happy. Some of those additions seem like they would have been quite random so I'm not too upset about them being cut. I hope the epilogue DLC makes sense and is just as epic as the game.

Smells like DLC.

Sadly yes... hopefully they'll have left it off the disc rather than the DLC just being an unlock code.
Suivatam109PS3 on 12 Apr '10
gow3 only got 9s and 10s.
if they had to cut content, so what?

when its good enough, theres no reason to hold it back(YES, im looking at u gt5)
User75 on 12 Apr '10
I guess if it was too big they'd have to make it smaller or it wouldn't have fit into the slot on the PS3.
Mintoxicator on 12 Apr '10
This is actually awesome news. Hopefully wei'll see the cut levels/bosses as dlc. I would buy it in a heartbeat. I'm glad they didn't add this in the actual game, it doesn't seem like it woud've fit into the story anywhere. The story was very balanced and just felt complete. Except for the mystery ending. Wink

Forge88, are ye a pirate?
Moribundman on 12 Apr '10
Seems like a plot to get DLC out. Mosat games if not all are cut at some point.
