Castlevania: Lords of Shadow producer Dave Cox has said that while Uncharted 2 was "highly polished" it didn't "redefine" the action game genre - largely because it was only released on one platform.
Speaking in the April issue of PSM3, Cox said, "Visually Uncharted 2 is beautiful and it impresses me technically. But does Uncharted 2 redefine 3rd person action games? I don't think that it does."
While Cox enjoyed many aspects of the game, he felt that Uncharted 2's exclusivity to PlayStation means that it cannot be given such a big accolade, "Uncharted 2 is a great game and I enjoyed it immensely. The standouts are the story and the voice acting," he said.
"[But] Uncharted was a single format release. If any game is going to set a benchmark for a genre it would need to do so across multiple platforms."
only a cross platform game can truly redefine?? bollocks to the extreme.
in fact, its exclusive games that usually shine - like uncharted!
and games that take full advantage of console specific features without having to compromise both versions, like agent which will get to use more disc space than any of rockstars previous games... which were already content heavy.
" Uncharted was a single format release. If any game is going to set a benchmark for a genre it would need to do so across multiple platforms."
Does that mean Super Mario Bros or Sonic wasn't a benchmark game either? When it comes to judging how good a game is, it's the game that matters not the platforms it is or isn't available on.
Uncharted 2 has set a standard that future games will be compared against, thus it is a benchmark game.
Uncharted 2 was a good game, it never pretended to be anything more. Perhaps this Dave fella should have a go at his boss Kiojima. It's Kojima who said technology could not keep up with his vision for MGS4, then all we got was hours of cut scenes with some average gamplay tacked on. Konami and Kojima are over rated this generation and are losing money, so their opinion on Uncharted 2 is about as important as the local tramp who sits at the bus stop near my house each morning sipping on a can of extra strong lager.
Maybe tomorrow I should ask him what he thinks about Uncharted 2, I'm sure it will make more sense than this article.
b*ll*x! no game needs to be multi platfrom to be a benchmark, this guy ios speaking a load of rubbish, how can he think he can make a statement like that making it sound like fact? He thinks by putting down one of the greatest action/adventure games it can make his game good?
" Uncharted was a single format release. If any game is going to set a benchmark for a genre it would need to do so across multiple platforms."
Take note xbots, halo isn't as great as you all thought.
This guys f*cking retarded. I mean seriously?? A game can't set a benchmark because its an exclusive?? Does this guy understand what he just said??
Apparently if Uncharted 2 was multi-platform it 'would've' set a benchmark. But since the exact same game is an exclusive then absolutely not. Go crawl in a hole you jealous snooker cue. I'm sure he thinks his new Castlevania game will be setting the new benchmark (in his mind)
As much as I've enjoyed Uncharted 2 so far (Only up to chapter 10)- love the graphics and the wise-cracking that goes on through out- but I've found the best bits of the game are the puzzles... and there hasn't been a lot of them so far... and they've been a little bit on the easy side. I don't think it's redefined platforming or gunplay- but what it does it does very well.
But saying that defining games need to be multiplatform is nonsense- they'll probably sell better but it's up to the creativity of the developers more than anything else.
Multiplatform games now are all about business and making more cash out of a title. But its usually the exclusives to one console that set these benchmarks, like Uncharted 2 which to this day is one of the best games i've played...... constantly awe struck throughout that game, such a RIDE of a game.
So unchartered 2 isn't redefining as it is only on one system? So, Mass Effect didn't redefine the space opera RPG, because it was only for 360 + PC? Nonsense.
I love the old 2D Castlevania games, but he shouldn't make such outlandish claims utill they finally make a truely amazing 3d one.
Did anyone claim it reinvented 3rd person action games? It was graphically excellent, great vo and had some great ideas...but thats it. Hyperbole..thy name is internet.
It epitomised the action adventure genre. At no point was it trying to redefine it. He has to have been misquoted or taken out of context there because I don't believe that a veteran designer could be as short sighted as that.
and @3dsboy101uk If you were being ironic then it wasn't funny and if you weren't then people like you are the reason I think there should be an aptitude test before you're allowed to use the internet.
Gotta be my biggest let down on the PS3, Graphically superb and a very cinematic story and presentation but to play it felt like a crap cross between Gears of War And Assasins Creed. Imitates mechanics from both games, but fails to match either. never even bothered to finish itas Assasins Creed 2 was sooooo much better!
This guy is half right and half retarded. It was a game that pretty much took several established ideas and mechanics and brought them to the nearest form of perfection to this date for such a game (if you say no then sorry you're just wrong).
I don't think anyone has said that it was revolutionary or redefined anything as it never did (but seriously nothing really does nowadays)but it has raised the quality bar. You can disagree and bash this and love Halo, gears, ass creed or the stupid wiimote and that's cool, live in your bubble and keep on trying to convince yourself.
Now to say exclusive games can't redefine anything is probably the stupidest comment I've heard this week. Almost everything now was brought forward by PC games and before that the snes etc so this guy is just making himself look like a completely ignorant douche. I could get a PR guy saying crap like this as they basically never know wtf they are on abt but by a producer?
What a load of Rubbish! i cant beleive what ive just read. so the One reason it didnt redefine was because it was only on one console? What difference would have it made if it would of been multiplat? NOTHING it would of been exactly the same but all of a sudden it would of been a redefining game!?
this guy wants to take his mouth to the toilet theres that much S**t coming out of it.
Perhaps this Dave fella should have a go at his boss Kiojima. It's Kojima who said technology could not keep up with his vision for MGS4, then all we got was hours of cut scenes with some average gamplay tacked on. Konami and Kojima are over rated this generation and are losing money
Agreed, although I would go as far to say Konami haven't been good since the SNES era. Its like that's when they peaked.
This guy is talking complete rubbish and anything that has any link or comes out of Konami is irrelevant and can fuck right off
To be fair to Konami they did redefine the action game genre to a large extent with the original Playstation MGS. It had an intricate plot, stealth gameplay and epic boss battles to name a few of the features that made it a seminal work. However since then what have they added to the series that actually innovates? f**k all that's what apart from a load of cutscenes.
Here's hoping that they do a good job of Castlevania and make it rock hard.
As for Uncharted, the games a masterpiece and never tried to redefine a genre. Everything it does it does to perfection even if it does lack originality which is overrated anyway. Kojima Productions could certainly learn a thing or two about pacing in a game from Naughty Dog.
haha i just spat out my coffee at focker telling that guy to grow up lmao when focker spends all days slagging off 360 articles
Yes I may post alot of comments in 360 threads, but you do the same in Sony ones. Theres nothing wrong with that. And I usually try to make valid points. Sometimes a few statements may seem outlandish but at least I try to be reasonable.
I don't blatantly say Natal is gonna completely blow. I at least have a reason as to why I feel that way, instead of just because.
Unlike ps360conspiracy's alter-ego 3dsboy101uk. He just spouts senseless bullsh*t constantly that has no relevance or merit. If you want a "gaming" console, you dont go out and buy a wii. As far as he's concerned everyone LOVES motion-control gaming and its the ONLY WAY TO PLAY. Joypads are for non-gamers in his mind.
Man, Castlevania must be awesome then if it's better than Uncharted. I know that's not what he said exactly but imo it's implied that Konami are doing a better job at trying to redefine a genre by releasing multi-platform.
Well, as stated a few times, multi-platform games generally dont cut it these days compared to exclusives. Unless each version was treated as an exclusive for ultimate optimisation on each system...which will never happen.
Would be cool though, Sony publish the Ps3 ver, MS the 360 ver and then we see the samne game that's awesome as it can be on both, that would be a defining moment.
I wouldn't say Uncharted redefined anything. All of it's ideas were borrowed from other games, albeit done better. Who cares though? At then end of the day it was a darn good game that was great fun to play and thats all that matters to me when I buy a game.

No. Just. No. Let Naughty Dog do what they do, and let Kojima do what he does. Not everything has to be Americanised. I'd rather have MGS than Uncharted any day of the month.

I meant in terms of pacing the narrative and balancing cutscenes with gameplay. I love both games but I marginally prefer Uncharted 2.
some s**t! i love uncharted! anyway someone said he should have a go at kojima and he's right. kojima said a month or two ago that if u delay ur game ur not doing ur job right. did he not remember mgs4 been delayed and then he goes and delays peace walker
Super Mario 64 - N64 Zelda - N64 MSG - PSX Half Life - PC Final Fantasy VII - PSX Doom - PC The Sims - PC World of Warcraft - PC Goldeneye - N64 Halo - Xbox Sonic the Hedgehog - Megadrive
Has to be multiplatform to redefine a genre? Bullshi*t..
Anywho, it certainly may not being doing much new in its basic form but it's taking the old, linear and cinematic game type and maxing the hell out of it.
So this guy thinks that the following games aren't redefining: MGS, Gran Turismo, Halo, Killzone 2, MAG, Devil May Cry, LBP made it's own genre! Final Fantasy, Zelda, Rachet and Clank, Mario, Sonic, Jak 2, Spyro, GoW, Gears o' War, Socom! The list goes on and on, some of the most redefining games out there started only on one platfrom! Who is this guy? Please tell me no one is paying him to talk bulls**t. From what it sounds like he's just giving Uncharted 2 flack because Naughty dog set the bar so high they're having problems matching it.
Uncharted 2 doesn't redefine the genre - correct Exclusive games don't redefine the genre - eh, wrong.
I can see what he is saying in one part and while it may not redefine the genre, it raised the bar into the fickin stratosphere.
Like a superb action movie that's been done before but feels like it's in its own league. Uncharted 2 is good news for the games of yesteryear, which we loved, as it shows growingly tired genres, when in the right hands, can still feel fresh and exciting.
It's strange that they should highlight Uncharted 2 though, in fact, it's very strange. Do they feel threatened by the games perfectly balanced pacing in comparison to their own, the tech that powers it or is there another reason??
WTF? if a games MP than it cant redefine its genre? man, this guys got to lay off the pipe! instead of passing the douchie on the left hand side, id suggest putting it down for a while!
uncharted 2 does not redefine its genre? so than can you tell me what other third person shooter/ platformer had so many action scenes you would think its a summer blockbuster? i cant think of any.
naughty dog went to so much trouble and effort to make everything so amazing, especially the train sequence and this is how you thank them? you have absolutely no freaking idea how hard it would of been to get the train sequence up and running the way it does!
in fact naughty dog were so dedicated to their project they coded parts of their game in assembly language! name one other game on ps3 that is partly coded in assembly language? yeah, i thought so!
It's funny how journos can report things out of context in order to stir up a storm isn't it? This is what he was asked:-
"Work on CLOS must be well underway, so how did it feel when Uncharted 2 came out and redefined people’s expectations of third-person action games? What does Uncharted 2 do well… and how can you raise the bar?"
So, it was PSM that stated that UC2 redefined people's expectations not the Producer bloke. And then this is what he said:
"Uncharted is a great game and I enjoyed it immensely. The main standout elements for me were the story and voice acting, which I think Castlevania – Lords of Shadow does very well. We’ve got a great script and some stellar actors like Patrick Stewart, Robert Carlyle; Jason Isaacs and Natascha McKelhone.
Visually as well, Uncharted 2 was a very beautiful game to look at, so on a technical level it impressed me.
As for, if Uncharted 2 redefines 3rd person action games? I don't think that it does. For me, it was a very highly polished, very well constructed 3rd person game but not a redefinition of the genre. Certainly a high point but not a redefinition.
Plus, Uncharted was a single format release. I think if any game is going to set a benchmark for a genre it would need to do so across multiple platforms.
Anyway, Castlevania Lords of Shadow isn't trying to compete with Uncharted at all. If you want to make a comparison, I would suggest a game like Prince of Persia would be nearer the mark."
So, it looks to me like he praised the hell out of UC2 not dissed it.
I think he was saying that it refined but it didn't redefine the genre. Plus, if you think about it, for everyone that DOESN'T have a PS3 it refined/redefined nothing for them as they didn't play it or experience it.
Was Uncharted 2 a good game? Yes, I enjoyed it. Did it redefine my gaming experience? Don't think so. Can anybody that played it honestly say that it redefined their perception of gaming? Seriously? Aside from looking great, it had a solid control system, which I would expect from any decent game anyway. You solved puzzles, you climbed, you shot weapons, you got a cut-scene - What was it in that game that redefined people's experiences in, say, the way Tomb Raider did when it first came out on PSOne?
And I agree with the minority on here - to say you've redefined people's expectations across third-person action games is too broad a statement (and one which it does appear PSM stated, not he). For a game that is released on only one format, you can only lay claim to that format alone - you have nothing else to compare it to. That's like claiming your wife is the best shag in the world when you haven't slept with anyone else...
Good luck, Mr Konami Producer, sounds like you've got a good perception of where this industry is at and you've got high expectations of your team, which bodes well for your game.
Uncharted 2 didnt redefine the 3rd person action game because it was padded out with boring fire fights, lacked any innovation & used puzzles that are 10 years old! (using rotational mirrors to direct a beam of light!?.. yawn). Having said that the graphics, voice acting & animation are incredible & raised so many bars. Just a shame the game designers are no way near as talented as the games artists.
It re-wrote the rule book for the standard level we accept as gamers. Almost every level seamlessly blended into the other, and you have the amazing cut-scenes, the strong firefights, and the excellent believable characters. I can't think of a single game that does it better. So for him to say it can't be a huge step forward because it's an exclusive is absolute b******s. The Gran Turismo series is the one racing series that almost every other looks towards enviously, but oh no, because it's an exclusive I suppose it's only operating at 50% of its genius. Do me a favour, jesus christ.
It was an awesome game, probably my favourite ever. Heavy Rain is the only game I enjoyed more, which is also exclusive, and created an entire new genre! God of War set the benchmark for graphics, gore and action, and it's exclusive. Little Big Planet set the benchmark for creative, imaginitive games.
Man is this guy really in the videogames industry? this guy just messed up real bad. Lots and lots of exclusives have redefined genres and this guy just blabs out something like this? I hope for his sake the castlevania game lives up otherwise...
