PreviousiPad won't impact Nintendo - Reggie Zelda team feel pressurised by Monster Hunter - Iwata  Next

Wii is still the dominant console

Nintendo Wii holds 47 percent of revenue share
A recent investment report from Ibis Capital has placed the Nintendo Wii at the top of the console charts in terms of revenue share.

The report lists the Wii's revenue share as 47 percent with the Xbox 360 following at 35 per cent and the PlayStation 3 trailing with a mere 18 per cent.

The report also highlights growing risks for independent games companies, with increasing development costs in the region of 15 to 30 million dollars per title on the PS3 and 360.

Ibis calculates that companies need to sell between 500,000 and 1 million copies of a game just to break even. The report also speculates that digital distribution could replace discs altogether, which would cut some costs.

When did this happen????

Anyways on a serious note. It seems like they're just talking about revenue from software sales. Of course the Wii is in the lead, the games are cheap as f*ck to develop and they still charge top dollar for them. Its no wonder they see the biggest profit.

Does anyone still think that "wii" is a stupid name?
KippDynamite on 7 Apr '10
I think the names "Natal" and "Move" sound just as stupid Laughing

The Wii is just great at what it does and there are always going to be more casual gamers than core gamers and the Wii just proved it. So what?

..and no, its dominance isn't based solely on the revenue from software sales:

Worldwide sales figures
1. Wii – 67.4 million, as of 31 December 2009
2. Xbox 360 – 39 million, as of 1 January 2010
3. PlayStation 3 – 33.5 million, as of 31 December 2009

I also think Nintendo have screwed themselves with the success of the Wii. When the Wii 2 comes out, I don't think many casual users will care much ... unless it can also make coffee Rolling Eyes

Ninetndo do have a dilemma on their hands when it comes to their next console. But from the past, companies usually take it in turns when it comes to success every generation. One company isn't generation-on-generation top dog.

I was a Nintendo hoo before Wii, now I associate Nointendos device with endless party games among its top titles which look last gen (and comparable to PSP in many cases), in fact some of its best games "are" last gen, Zelda TP, Okami, Resident Evil 4 etc etc

If these were released on PS3 or Xbox 360 as full priced games, Sony and MS would be laughed at. At least games such as Fallout werent possible last gen and offer a greater scope of development.

I've had it with Nintendo. Making a GameCube with motion controls and marketing it as a gimmic but expecting hardcore gamers to acknowledge it shows har far the mighty have fallen.

I guess we'll never know what Zelda harnessing the power of PS3 or Xbox 360 tech will look like until next gen when PS4 or the new Xbox is released. Thanks Nintendo.

I thought nobody bought Wii games because all the consoles are stuck in a cupboard gathering dust...

Either that isn't true, or a small section of the Wii userbase are buying a massive amount of games.

I bought quite a few games for my Wii, but that stopped when I got a PS3.

Mine isn't stuck in the closet - my mum and sister play it (Wii Fit) Laughing and it still owns when my relatives kids visit (Wii Sports)

I haven't even bothered with Wii Sports Resort or the 1:1 motion upgrade. Fun doesn't need realism.

Yes I agree the graphics for the wii can be considered last gen but since when have they been integral to GAMEPLAY.
There are still many games for it (wii) that just wouldn't have been possible last gen either (red steel 2 for one) and that's due to the integrated motion controls which also allows for greater scope of development in my opinion most developers just simply haven't got to grips with motion controls yet and Natal and PS Move will only help to improve this situation.

Oh and one more thing ignore those party games you'll feel much better for doing so the wii has so much more available that deserves to be played just check out the wii Library topic in the Nintendo Forum.

Ok so here goes it, though I doubt you'll see much sense in my reply because you'll no doubt find something to nit pick at.
The wii probably is technically better than the cube/Xbox but most devs don't use it to its full potential.(Only Nintendo in my opinion)
Anyway you totally misunderstood my point I was championing game play over graphics even the word was in your favorite caps lock I don't know how you missed it.

Oh and pc monitors were not HD 15 years ago they've simply always just had a higher resolution than TV's if you were right then the general public would all have had HDTV's for the last 10 years.
