iPad sells 300k on launch day

... but tech glitch means some users can't connect to Wi-Fi
Apple's iPad sold 300,000 units on its launch day in the US on Saturday - but technical glitches threatened to spoil the purchase for some tech-heads.

Apple released the figure today - and said that around a million Apps had been sold on the device.

According to The Times, however, some users had problems with connecting the device to their Wi-Fi network.

The newspaper reports: 'The touch screen tablet computer can only connect to the internet via Wi-Fi in the launch version, so problems with connectivity are potentially serious. Commentators have speculated that the problem might be a weak Wi-Fi antenna, located behind the Apple logo on the back of the iPad.'

Apple's forums have been hit with complaints from buyers - but the firm has yet to respond.

Because they're are idiots who will buy anything apple releases.

This is a bad glitch on their hands but at least it's not as bad as the iphone problem where you couldnt make any calls. Dont know how apple gets away with it Rolling Eyes

300,000 sold on launch? and you get people complainig about the psp go. (too expensive, download only etc...)

What's an iPad?
mkwuk on 5 Apr '10
The PSP Go had a point as well - with the iPad, there really isn't any reason not to buy a netbook or laptop instead, since you get more functionality (specifically, flash and multitasking) for less money. Even style-wise, there are some sleek laptops nowadays (just look at any of Sony's offerings, for a start). Without flash or the ability to install another OS, the iPad is pointless. It makes sense to get either 'extreme' option, either a laptop or a personal media player.

I think when it comes to Apple, they can market anything, at any cost (always over-priced), with whatever limited functionality and their rabid fan base will lap it up.

I still can't see much of a future for the iPad though. Is 300k good numbers?

Really thinking about getting the ipad when it surfaces down here. It's bee-oo-tiful.

Its ugly,Apple are terrible only reason people buy them is because sheeple think it makes them look cool and with it. When really it just makes them look like a fool.
moss66 on 6 Apr '10
Kindle, is ugly. The iPad looks beautiful.

I don't care for tablet computers... least of all the iPad, but it will be interesting seeing how other manufactures respond. It can be only good news for consumers because prices will fall and features will rise.

Right now, I'm more interested in the new Nintendo 3D handheld, than the iPad, Kindle, Move, Natal or even 3D TV.

wasnt there a 3gs problem where they literally just exploded? I would like to see apple make an OS without ripping off unix and adding some colour.

Hey both companies are terrible but until MS release an over sized zune with no flash support I cant say they throw out the most useless garbage.

McDonald's serves more than 47 million customers around the world every day.

Given that both sets of information are approximately correct, I challenge CVG readers to try and see the bigger problem.
LordVonPS3 on 6 Apr '10
I would quite like one but seeing as it's apparently uncool to own one according to you miserable lot, then perhaps I'm achieving coolness after all?

Yes, at last; because far from thinking that it would be quite nice to have a neat media device in my hand while I relax on the sofa with some music in the background, my primary goal is to look great.

Ooh, let me!

Is it something about burgers being exceedingly cheap, costing pounds from a world renown brand established as an international franchise since 1971 (true figure is actually 1967 I believe but I'm counting outside of the American continent) and iPads being relatively expensive, also from a world renown brand, but where the item in question is a considerably large investment not to mention vastly different function as well?

Because you wouldn't be foolish enough to try and draw a comparison of success based on that, would you?
boskersrevenge on 6 Apr '10
i'm betting that most, if not all, of you naysayers don't own an iphone, ipod touch or mac. if you do and you don't like them then fair enough, but if you don't own them then i think you are just slagging them off because you hate the to$$ers who think they're cool because they own apple kit. you can hate the to$$ers all you like but the fact of the matter is that the devices and OS's are great for what they are.

I for one will be buying an ipad just because it'll be great for surfing the web, email, working on my keynote presentations and having fun with some cool apps and games in a device which has a really gorgeous usable screen.

i use my iphone an awful lot but a bigger screen is always welcome.

as for flash support, well yeah it would be nice but html5 is coming on well now so flash may be on its way out.
shellster2 on 6 Apr '10
It's a bug-bear is lack of Flash, but it's not the end of the world.

I've seen Flash hacks and "there is an app for that" Confused

I was merely pointing out that people seem to be moaning about how successful (or not) the iPad was on launch day given how much of a bad rep it's been given... McDonalds also gets a bad rep in that it's not good for your health which is a far more serious issue than spending a wad on a highly priced piece of equipment for reasons already discussed. The health issues don't stop McDonalds being tremendously successful.

People don't know what's good for them, they buy based on brand.

As for who's drawing a comparison between sales numbers & prices here... It looks like you're alone silly, silly, Bosker. Rolling Eyes

I doubt very much that I will bother with one of these. I got my 360, I have an ipod and I have a macbook, all of which meet my needs.

I just can't see the point of the thing. If it was about £200, then yeah, count me in but £600 for one that is 3G enabled?

Nah, I'm ok thanks Apple.
monty_79 on 6 Apr '10
The 300,000 who went out and bought one of these 'vanity gadgets' (saw that on some other forum and think it sums it up very well) will be the Apple faithful and a few deluded fools. I'd be surprised if it's anything near as successful as the iPhone. It's just way over-priced for what it is.

Still there's no doubt that Apple hardware (iPhone, iPad etc.) is good in principle (though there are definitely shortcomings - e.g. no multi-tasking); my real problem with them is the vice-like control Apple are trying to gain over the market. Whilst they publicly claim they don't support Flash because it's buggy etc. there's little doubt that the real reason is that Flash is a potential competitor to the App store...

Given time Flash will no doubt offer support for hardware specific functionality, meaning you could potentially allow a website to access the GPS, accelerometer etc. on your phone. That means you write one application that is available to potentially all smartphone users, over the web - i.e. no need for App store, and no way for Apple to cream off their cut from pointless applications being sold to morons who don't realise that most of them could already be available free over the web anyway.

boskersrevenge on 6 Apr '10
It sold more on it's launch day than the original iPhone. And no one here could possibly say that the iPhone hasn't been a tremendous success.

The old 'it doesn't do multitasking' arguement is about to rendered moot as the new iPhone OS, version 4 is being previewed on Thursday. The word is Apple have found a way to do it that doesn't cause a big increase in battery use, the reason they've not allowed 3rd party software to multi task. All the built in Apple apps can already multi task.

Also I'm tired of and frankly ignore all the 'vanity' accusations that haters use. I have an iMac, a 360, a HP laptop running windows 7 and a iPhone. I have them all to do jobs I need them to do, they do them very well and that is the only yardstick that I use when choosing them. Apple does however make stuff, which by my standards of design, aesthetics and taste make cooler stuff. It's not for everyone and I respect that, I just would like others that don't like it to show an equal level of respect.

As to the iPad. I'm on the fence at the moment. My laptop does the media creation bit better but it is a pain to carry it if all I going to use it for on my trip is media comsumption and demostration. I travel a lot in my job and if all I need for a particular trip is to surf the web, email and watch movies with some small media creation work then the iPad may just be the thing I need.

This may all change however as soon as I get my hands on one. I strongly suspect that desire to own one will overtake my need to have one.

But I can afford it, so sod it.

Well f*** you too buddy! Laughing I did challenge people to see "the bigger problem" and you failed oh so chronically with your over baked and completely pointless analysis.

If one were to draw comparisons, they'd look at how McDonalds competes with Burger King and KFC... It's the same question of taste & brand that have people comparing Nintendo with Microsoft and Sony.

Comparing an iPad with a McDonalds serving as you've done however is an obscenely stupid thing to do and you missed the point completely. I won't dare blush for your inept demonstration of stupidity! Seriously, go away, you're rubbish!!! Smile

I'd also say that the "fast-food" pond in terms of branding is equally as "small" as those of electronics / video games manufacturers, so your retort is therefore null and void.

I win again. Laughing
LordVonPS3 on 6 Apr '10
Dont worry Vonps3, think most intelligent people understood your first post. Boskers talking tripe trying to justify Apples dictatorship of its foolish buyers.

Really Why do you buy Applle Bosker? It cant be for functionality as compared to a pc macs are just big calculators. It cant be value for money as for whatever mac product you buy you can buy a rival with twice as many features for half the price. It cant be for customer service as its none exsistant. The OS is the most obtuse on the market. The logic boards a waste of time in mac books. They release the same product over and over again with specs that should of been available from the 1st model just to milk there customers some more (eg. videoless recording iphone).

Dont get me wrong my mate can't use a pc for toffee so the limitations apple force on its users makes it very noob user friendly for him, kinda like a my first PC, But its first selling point to him and 90% of there customers was design more than anything. "Form over functionality" should be Apples motto.

But its very deluding of Jobbs to stand on stage and pronounce every gimped piece of tat they ship as better than God himself. By the time Apple ship anything its been superseeded by another company, who dont treat their customers like performing seals.
moss66 on 6 Apr '10

I'm not defending Apple, don't get me started on you, moss. Your post is another blah fest of "urgh, apple is bad, urgh... urgh... I'm going to winge like my opinion isn't a squirt of piss in the ocean of the internet"

I don't care.

But you have an opinion, so come on then. Explain PS3's point, seeing as you have grasped it so perfectly. I can only imagine a tome of excellence coming my way, or should you go silent, then my suspicion of you nursing little bitch tits as well might well be accurate.

Oh, and Von? You haven't actually explained anything, not to any degree of succinct similarity between Apple and McDonald's; in relation to the iPad's launch figures or its position as the item it is.

Will it blend is quite old, but this is a little newer. Enjoy.

1. He's selling it. Because that's what he's paid to do. To say how great it is so people will want to buy it. I mean, what an awful cad, eh?

2. By the time Apple conceive it, it usually has been bettered, technically, so what's your point?

Some people make personal choices on what they buy; it's called consumer choice and that's what Apple also rely on.

Funny thing is, most of those people enjoy what they've purchased. If there is a contingent who bought Apple stuff to look or seem cool and they've shelled out X amount of pounds and now live with a nagging, scratching doubt in their head that they've f**ked up, well... that's there problem, isn't it?

Don't quite know why it's yours.

VonPS3s point is McDonalds is bad for you and you can get much better burgers elsewhere, but due to their marketing strategy they hold the biggest share of the market. They make their product out to be some sort of lifestyle choice and dweebs look at that and say mee too. Nothing to do with the product just how people want others to perceive them.

Just like when friends turned up on tv in the 90s real cafes shut down by the thousands to make way for Costas and Starbucks so people can buy into that friends experience, sitting round drinking over priced coffee playing with their macs.

Woah girlfriend, saying "I didn't attack you" within such a big opening is a bit oxymoronic. Have you read your initial post? In what way was that not attacking my intelligence? Have a look back and reread what you have read. I took exception to you too. So, was my following post entirely unjustified?

When you grow up(or at least some pubes) you might learn that not everyone needs to be shepherded and pay through the nose for the privilege baaahhhh.

Along the same tone as your initial post... again, I think myself justified in tackling you as I did.

Burgers are bad for you, full stop. McD's, like everyone else in our seemingly (although not quite) free market, can sell what sells. But moreover, his point was shite regardless, as people are hardly held at gun point and when you start earning other people's money for them, you could actually have a say in what they spend that money on.

There are so many more reasons McD's holds it's market share, do some research.

Also, are you living under a rock? Our consumer society is bulging with "lifestyle" choice. Even Oxfam are selling a lifestyle brand. FFS, even Matalan!

Just like when friends turned up on tv in the 90s real cafes shut down by the thousands to make way for Costas and Starbucks so people can buy into that friends experience, sitting round drinking over priced coffee playing with their macs.

Seriously? You're standing by that? Can't be arsed to sit here and educate you but look up lifestyles, cultures; globalisation and trends - which I would say Friends falls quite neatly into had it not been for the fact that "Central Perk" began in our collective conciousness in 1994 and the coffee revolution didn't kick off till about 4 years later.

Apple just know how to sell lifestyle, nothing tangible. Now STFU your very dim and boring.

Apple know what they're doing but they also sell products as well, which are, I think you'll find, tangible. People who spend their money, know what they're doing.

What you're doing is jumping on the Apple hate band wagon for what purpose, exactly?

Some info on me, I own a shuffle, which I paid for. Have two ipods, and old one and a fairly new one, which were bought for me as gifts and that's about it.

So, how come I am a fanboy?

I would like an ipad, might not necessarily buy one but then that's my choice.

I'm also 34 and considerably hairier than you, trust me; working long hours, earning good money and perfectly capable of making my own choices.

BTW my GF got a macbook and it just died. Had to send it back to Apple for them to look at as they won't let anyone else touch their sh!tty products. Turns out the logic board can over heat if using it while charging and in cold weather this causes condensation and knackers it up (common but apple denies it) They want £700 for a new logic board which they can swivel for or £100 just for looking at it. They are holding her Mac untill she coughs up the Ransom.

So in short shes going to have to pay out £500 just to get her sMac back broken, or £1,100 for them to change the logic board. Yeah really good company there. Ooooh it doesnt multi task --- well currently not in the traditional way , but they are other ways of working and apps to work around this.
Ive got no other comments, no list of supporting evidence, it just rocks, (by the way i havnt got a mac or a iphone ,but its pretty clear if youve got more than two brain cells that they s**t on everyone else)

If you got more than 2 brain cells, a underpowered fancy serving tray just isnt going to cut it. Its just a bigger uglier iphone. Get over it. Look at it,take it in,deep breath......."piece of overpriced sh!t" now move on.
