Multiple PS3 users are encountering problems after downloading firmware update 3.21.
The mandatory update, which, among other things, removes the option to install alternative operating systems, released at the beginning of April.
Now numerous PS3 owners are using the official PlayStation forums to report system errors post download. These include blank screens when consoles are switched on, disc read errors, locked PSN accounts, and even systems that won't power up.
We haven't had any problems in the office, but the news perhaps isn't that surprising when you consider Sony's recent history with firmware updates.
There's been no official word from the platform holder on the matter yet.
How's your console been behaving since the update's release?
Now I know I have my avatar as my 360 Gamer Card but this statment is not meant to be fanyboyish:
I honestly can't think back and remebember and time of Microsoft having a problem like this. Yet I have heard of PS3 firmware updates causing bricking on a number of occasions.
Once again, I'm NOT a fanboy. does saying that make me a fanboy? I hope not!

Well if you can't remember the RROD you're a fanboy.
I think it was FW 3.15 that killed my 60GB PS3.. Trawled the Sony Forums and there were a ridiculous amount of similar problems. Good job on managing to do it again a few months on...

I'm on my 3rd Xbox due to RROD. I was talking about firmware updates as in the story.

I'm far from a fanboy (got all 3 consoles), but even I know that old problem was a hardware design and not a firmware update.
F*ck YEAH! Thank god the YLOD is caused bij the update now I dont have to pay the 150 bucks for repair! Hell now I can demand they send me GoW3 to make it up to me. They have to send me a MW2 hardened edition anyway couse my disc won't come out.
The latest firmware update has caused havoc with my wireless internet connection for some reason. My 360 is still going strong so I know its not my router. Over the past week i've lost count of how many times i've lost server connection while playing MW2 - although, i'm sure, some of you may think thats no bad thing!
Thats strange...I have a 60 gig ps3 with the backwards compatibility feature and after installing that update after over 40 hours of playing ff13 the game froze then would not play. I then started playing God of War 3 and paused it in the options screen and that froze aswell! Anyway after a full system restore the same problem thus a bricked old school ps3! It was only a couple of years old too...
This is why I dont rush to update my PS3. If it bricks I cant see me splashing out for another one especially as I have one of the original 60gig ones. Lovefilm has just posted out God of war 3 to me. Must avoid update at all costs haha
I've not checked since installing the update. Even still, having invested as much as I have into the console, don't I have the right to expect it to work properly and that any software/firmware from Sony, in particular compulsory ones, are trustworthy? Sony should have their own guinea pigs to test the firmware - not their user base.
I have yet to be affected by one of their updates (although it seems its only a matter of time) but can I not feel angry on behalf of the many who have been affected? I don't own an Xbox either but the sheer failure rate I have seen through those who have bought them enrages me - the only reason I didn't buy one.
I've had no issues with 3.21, nor have I ever had any problems with any firmware update, either on my original 60GB or my Slim.
As for those with 360s and short memories - the NXE bricked numerous consoles. http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/20/nxe-hitting-360s-with-red-ring-freezing-and-sorta-sexy-avatar-i/
Wasn't the update a week or so ago?? Why are people seeing issues now, and where were they last week?? Seems like quite the laundry list of issues off of one update. Smells fishy, and no its not my ps3.
I was waiting for this as it seems everytime a mandatory update comes out there are reports of various errors that occured after installing it. I begrudingly installed the update and so far have had no issues, although Sony should be ashamed of themselves for removing an option that people have paid for with the purchase of their console.
My fat 80 gIG ps3 has stopped working properly since the install. I tried to play Demons Souls, game wouldn't load, froze and now the console won't eject the disk. Is this linked to the update? I am soooo peeved at this, Sony have done very well out of me for years and I'm sick of having these mandatory installs that take an age to download. At the very least they should ensure that they don't stop your console from working! Can anyone help here?
I was thinking about buying a camera made by Sony "Sony DSCHX5VB Cybershot" It was released at the start of Jan 2010. Now you can't find one anywhere for love or money, even though they where still advertising it on TV about 2 weeks ago?
Hey bobby how about you actually buy a PS3 for starters. The last update took 3 minutes max to install, Also if it truly did magically stop working then obviously its the update. Where were you last week?? You're just now addressing this problem??
Theres a thread about it a week later and everyone is coincidentally just now having problems. I'm not buying it. Nice try 360 fanboys.
Oh and bobby if you're not lying (doubt it) then hold the eject button on your PS3 for 5-10 seconds and your disc will automatically eject. Even if your system is having issues.
Mine seems ok. get the odd youtube xl freezing the system, but that was pre 3.21.
The disc read error is a common fault on early 60 gb and 40 gb chubby PS3's according to the sony service line in Spain . My original 40gb was swapped out for free when the Blu ray lens packed up. They took the serial number and confirmed it was one from an affected batch.
funny thing was it worked fine right up till FW 2.41 ithink it was, and the FW had BR play back enhancements.
harsh?? I was going for being a complete d*ck. but yes it was a little uncalled for.
I just think its a hoax from 360 fanboys. Why are we just now hearing about issues when the update has been out for over a week?? Nothing was a problem until today.
yeah seems a tad weird just hearing it now. Tho i have to say i am nervous as hell when it comes to updating my PS3's firmware, its an 80GB model just past its warranty. Thinking about trading it in for a slim and paying that little bit extra for a 3 years warranty from GAME.
my slim replacement for my launch model was freezing before the update especially using the browser and play tv.sony suggested ful system restore which helped but after update its freezing still but not as frequently.roll on the update to fix the update!

JEEESSSUUSSS MAN SONY GOT YOU BRAINWASHED TALK ABOUT BLIND LOYALTY
@bellboy have anything worth while to say? No?? Stow it then.
@Bombjack the original 60GB PS3 have issues with motherboard warping, mine died last year after summer 12 hour marathon game play. Going to get it repaired shortly and then reinstall my 500GB drive and toss my 160GB to my best friend.
I have the update and nothing is wrong with my PS3, seems odd that now there are reports of systems not working considering the update has been out for a whole week.
The update didn't take long to download or install, geez all the crap I hear out of fanboys is annoying. Want to hear some crap, I play FM3 online and would you believe that the matchmaking on that thing is busted, ever since they sent out the latest car pack, now you get dropped out of rooms randomly, stuck on loading screen and the system locking up, only when playing FM3 and the disc is scratch free on a Xbox 360 Elite. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
I own every system out and i play what I enjoy on each, free online is you get what you pay for, and it's not half bad, paid for online is great, but when you get FM3 issues and stupid matchmaking that's just a slap in the face.
Note OLD PS3's have a hard time standing up to extended hours of play without more than adequate airflow(low humidity air flow). The motherboard with warp because of poor heat dissipation, so be warned.
Hey bellboy, I mean ps360conspiracy. Why are you constantly changing your name?? So far you go by 3 different names as far as I know. I know its you so don't try and deny it. Especially since it says you created this new profile today.
You're not fooling anyone, we can spot your posts a mile away. And no its not just because of the caps lock. Your completely idiotic claims will always give you away.
These 'problems' always get reported after a firmware update, its funny because I never have problems, and neither do the many owners I know with 60gb have problems - I think a handful have problems, assume it was the firmware and spread the cr@p all over the internet
sigh typical sony! it only does everything, now including gimped firmware updates and removing features YOU PAID FOR! can they do anything right? honestly? every ps3 exclusive on release is gimped in one way or form. MGS4 kept on freezing. LBP well besides the karahn incident also kept freezing. resistance 2, well online the game kept freezing, and some times those big enemies kept getting stuck in the roofs or walls! KZ2, oh dont get me started with that and its 5021 errors! uncharted 2 again with the freezing, especially in the 2nd last level before the last treasure. heavy rain with the audio skipping, and freezing at the shopping mall. GOW3, god where do i start? freezing, freezing AND MORE FREEZING! enemies falling through floors, and there are so many glitches in the game its embarrassing! can sony do anything right? just once can i have a ps3 exclusive come out and work 100% on release? once, just once, i dont think thats too much to ask! as the old saying goes never ask a hardware company to do software!

Smoked it and tastes good mate, Forza 3 works fine, yes the lobby in general sucks but as for the drops and freezes you experience, I wouldn't say it's a serious issue, well not for us anyway (over 6 hour session happened once to me, and that I'm 90% sure that was due to a wireless connection error rather than game related. Hope it sort's itself out for you fella, great game indeed
Not sure if it was anything to do with this update but lately I've noticed that some of my videos mysteriously won't play, when identical videos in terms of format, bitrate and even size will. It isn't very many but it really has me stumped.
all i have had from the PS3 is problems, i have had the RRD on my 360 but MS has a far better service than Sony.
Really?
Not trying to be argumentative but I thought that Sony usually did a straight swap where a guy turns up on your doorstep (within 2-3 days) and literally gives you a new PS3...
When my 360 got RROD I had to wait four days the first time but a whole month the 2nd!

Think the install time must vary between consoles, I have never had an update that has taken less than 30 minutes (although I havent got round to updating the new one yet, might give it another couple of days)but I have friends who have downloaded them in 10 minutes

NXE Dashboard caused problems for me. Oh and i had to change my whole networking here at home just to get online with an xbox.. it's all good now though.

And Sony tried to charge me over £100 to get my PS2 repaired when it stopped reading disks after just 6 months... claiming it wasn't a hardware fault.
These problems always seem to happen to people only on the internet. I mean, I have never met someone who has had this problem. Who knows, some of these people might be part of the select few retards who actually do mess with the console while it's updating.
I'm no genius but if it is a fundamental design flaw in the code then wouldnt pretty much all ps3's be screwed? Either way I'm sorry for your loss.

I had to wait a fortnight to get my PS3 back after the Blu ray drive went. Sony charged my £90 and the doofus on the customer service line forgot to tell the couriers to pick it up too.
Got my 360 back inside a week when it rroded. incredibly straight forward and got my warrenty extended for another two years afterwards. All for free.
From my experience i had a much easier time dealing with MS than Sony. Nintendo have to be my fav for customer care though. Their machines don't break in the first place.

Well, I suppose people are going to have differing opinions based on their personal experiences.
I was royally shafted by MS who replaced my RROD console with a dud which wouldn't play Gears of War. When I called them up they said that the extended warranty only covered RROD and I'd have to pay £130.
So basically...I suffered the RROD and they inadvertently got away with not replacing my console in spite of the extended three year warranty...
However, I'm talking about the actual replacement process. I would much rather have a dude turn up on my doorstep and do a straight swap than have to box up my console and send it off...
I don't have much experience of Sony's customer service tbh. All I know is that I suffered three RRODs but have never had a single problem with my PS3 aside from the extremely occasional freeze-up - which seems to be specific to certain games.
I just got so sick of the ticking time bomb! Every time I booked a week off I had to mentally prepare mysely for the worst!
I remember getting the RROD literally a week after GRAW 2 came out! I was sooooo furious at the time - not least because i'd hardly played it all week and was waiting for the weekend so I could really get stuck in...

My Wii will never break because I never turn it on anymore. A complete waste of money.

My experience with Sony was dreadful, especially considering they marketed the PS2 as a DVD player as much as a console, only for them to moan that I'd been watching too many films... MS on the other hand replaced my 2nd RROD console with a brand new one even though it was out of warranty, and it arrived within a week.
My PS3 is barely used, and I always give any new firmware update a few weeks because there are always hiccups when they first release it... annd as Sony themselves said, "We're not software people"
Ok heres an article with comments from sony about the update. They of course say that there haven't been any signs of issues after the update.
They also say, "Furthermore it it?s important to note that it is simply not possible for a system software update to affect the mechanical operation of PlayStation 3 in any way."
This is just a hoax from 360 fanboys. They're just begging for PS3 to have any issue they can compare to RROD. Which will never happen. Have fun with your 60% failure rates idiots.

But... it is really easy to make hardware useless by screwing up the software essentially turning the console into a brick... just the same as one small missing file can screw up areas of a PC's performance... the hardware cannot perform properly with inadequate software.
As for 60% failure rates that's surely the % of Sony firmware updates that prompt stories like this one... you'd think they'd have learnt to test these updates by now.

That's a shame, there's aload of good games coming out for it over the summer too. Mines going to get switched back on in a couple weeks when monster hunter tri comes out and probably won't stop getting played on untill i've finished playing mario galaxy 2, then other m will probably be out.

it took my fat ps3 almost 10 mins to update and thats on a 20mb connection i smell bulls**t coming from you
Well I updated my firmware when Heavy Rain came out and the PS3 just stopped reading discs. May have just been a coincidentally timed hardware fault though. And that's my second PS3 gone cos my first suffered a case of the blinking red lights problem and wouldn't turn on. And that was the day I got Soul Calibur IV. My next PS3 should be fine as long as I don't buy any games for it.
