Microsoft lied in E3 Natal video, says Heavy Rain boss

David Cage says demo trailer was 'sci-fi'
Heavy Rain director David Cage has claimed that Microsoft 'lied a bit' in its presentation video to show off Project Natal at E3 last year.

Speaking to Destructoid, Quantic Dream boss Cage said he couldn't believe that one particular scene - in which a boy showed his skateboard to the screen before scooting off on it in the virtual world - could be achieved in reality.

However, Cage said he was looking forward to the peripheral's release.

"I've seen Natal, and I'm really curious to see what they're going to do with it," he said. "I was a bit frustrated that they presented it with a sci-fi type presentation [at E3]."

Destructoid reports Cage rolled his eyes when he commented: "When the kid comes in with the skateboard and the laser ray, scanning the skateboard, and then it's in the game... We are in the industry, we know what's feasible and what's not."

He added: "I thought it was a little bit lying to present it that way, because it will let [consumers] think that they will something that they are not really close to getting."

Microsoft is set to reveal Natal in all its glory at E3 in June.

It is clear to me that you are a xbox fanboy by lookin at your recent posts so you cannot call anyone or any company arrogant. You xbot.

Whats Sci-Fi about it? As I see it the Natal takes a photo of the kids board and use it as texture on the ingame board? That doesnt seem unrealistic to me.

I didnt realise Quantic Dream got a Dev kit for Natal from MS Wink .

And voodoo, he may not be a First Party Dev but they are signed into a 3 Game contract with guess who ... ? Sony.

He is the boss of a game exclusive to Sony , so yes he is, hes Sony bitch.
As a former employee of that Corp , i can tell you 100 things they lied about.

MS are software masterminds and they always coome out on top and Natal will bring a whole new aspect to gaming. It will evole unlike the generic Wii and PS3 controls.

Sony hasn't just become bullies overnight...but it is odd that we're seeing a lot of spin from them ever since the Move was announced.

I guess the general reception likening their new device to a lollipop or a 'personal massage' device wasn't the response they were looking for? Razz

Man, Microsofts presentation was so over the top. They promised something they are struggling (i think) to live up to.
Atleast sony's presentation wasn't based on speculation and is possible to achieve.
I've had enough of the bulls**t coming out of the microsoft camp.

David Cage made the Farheneit game, you muppet.

As for Natal - Microsoft lied about pretty much all of it. They've yet to show anything significant for it, and last I read, it doesn't even work (paragraph 9 onwards).

It's just you.
Lloyd12 on 5 Apr '10
Dorian you as much of a Xbox fan boy as that Grasshopper dude is for the PS3.
David Cage and Quantic Dream don't belong to Sony at all. They are an independent studio who released a game exclusive to Sony's platform. They are no more attatched to Sony than Ninja Theory was with Heavenly Sword.
But as for his comments he was asked a question and he answered it. That isn't being a bully boy or e vidence of him being in cahoots with Sony; he's a developer and he answered according to that.
Xavier WB on 5 Apr '10
i'm sure it copied the image of the skate board onto the skate orad ingame not the actual thing. even so its very possible to scan the shape of 3d objects if it has 2 cameras of infered and 1 cam of colour
mafiahobo on 5 Apr '10
I'm with that guy earlier who said something about using that skateboard as nothing more than a texture. If Cage thought it implied more then that's his problem. As a consumer I didn't suddenly think that I had stepped into the Matrix or Minority Report.
Besides Cage is one to talk for not being able to deliver on promises or ideas.
FASELI on 6 Apr '10
sick of hearing from this David Cage guy now...he is just gonna become another Game Developer who can't shut his mouth...he wants to put his efforts on bringing out a game that doesn't give me a f**king game save corruption when i am 8 hrs in

He's not talking crap, even I noticed that when it scanned only the board was scanned in. I doubt they do that at all, and you would have to hold that thing extremely still, but an even better idea would be to have photos of the most popular boards made. A lot of the Natal video showcased what they want to achieve, not what is actually achievable when it launches. Facial recognition?!? So the system will know who is playing? Interesting, but actually feasible in this day and age, I'll believe it when I see it.

no, so how does he know what it can and what it can not do?
just because you have picked something up and used it does not mean you instantly know what it can and can not do.
lets wait till its out, and we start to see some content for it before we go out claiming it cant do this or that.
everyone said KZ2 would never reach the quality of the CG trailer released at E3 and what happened?

"I've had enough of the bulls**t coming out of the microsoft camp."

What bulls**t is that then? Have you seen the live Natal demos? Well I have and it delivers everything they promised in the original release video. Know what? I'm sick and tired of everybody elses bulls**t, get off MS' case! I own a 360 and a PS3 and the xbox is by far the better console. The PS3 is drab, souless, has no real sense of community (PS Home is crap) and don't get me started on PSN! Dowlnloads take forever, I'm sick of console updates that take 30 minutes to download and install, xbox ones take a couple of minutes. Want to watch a movie? sure on PSN you could have a HD movie downloaded in about a year, on xbox you can have it streamed instantly. I'm sick of Sony's bulls**t, I'm sick of PSN timing me out when there is nothing wrong with my connection and my 360 and PC stay connected, I'm sick of constant updates, I'm sick of substandard multiplatform ports (so much for the power of the PS3!ha!), if it wasn't for the bluray and odd decent exclusive I would have sold sony's black sack of Sh*t a long time ago!

cause video game developers don't know anything about the latest tech. F*ckin idiots. I'm almost positive quantic dream already has a natal so they can try and develop something for it.

So Dave_25, you saw it right?? Were you able to scan your skateboard into the game?? Because thats all he was talking about. I'm sure you can swat a ball and talk to milo just fine. What else did you see besides that?? Apparently you know more info about natal than any other person in the game industry. Enlighten us.

Really?? Doesn't cut it?? Ok so, Mag, Heavy Rain, God Of War 3, Modnation Racers, The Last Gaurdian, GT5, Agent, The Agency, White Knight Chronicles, 3D Dot Game Heroes, and DC Universe Online. So thats 11, more than double what you thought.

And what exclusives does 360 have this year?? Halo Reach, Alan Wake, and Crackdown 2. Wow 3 games, you guys sure have an awesome line-up.

Clearly you and David Cage haven't played Rainbow 6 Vegas on 360, where you can scan your face and use it in game.

Clearly with a skateboarding game the scan area will be skateboard shaped meaning that if you hold up your skateboard within that region you can scan it and use it
Rob S London on 6 Apr '10
Focker420, you forgot the highest rated game of the year in mass effect 2 Rolling Eyes

You've also listed some 2011 releases in your ps3 list to make the ps3 exclusive lineup look a bit bulkier(an old trick).
White Knight Chronicles has got some shocking reviews so i wouldn't keep bringing that up.
Mag isn't that good either.
Modnation racers is coming to psp, so non ps3 owners can indeed play it if they want(not getting a great preview from what i've read about it).

So out of your list, only heavy rain and god of war 3 are the standout exclusives from that little lot.

Mass effect 2, Crackdown 2, Splinter cell, Alan wake, Halo reach and Fable 3 all sound a bit more exciting from a 360 point of view than the ps3 exclusives so far for 2010.
Of course we can't be certain fable 3 will make this year, just like we can't be certain GT5 will hit the ps3 in 2010 either.

But the big titles on 360 sound just a little bigger than the ps3's best this year(imo).

Err... no. Sony showed with the Move what they can do. It is sound. Just look at their tech demo's. Sony are not worried.

MS on the other hand have not proven anything yet. Natal is still a bit of a mystery.

As for MS being software masterminds.... now that is really funny....

Desaima on 6 Apr '10
I know it's already been said, but whilst I was reading this I couldn't help but think "what about facial recognition software, that already works." And surely, copying a pattern is easier than something as complex as the human face!

Oh and I'm glad blagger's post came up as I was typing this coz I was sure some of the titles Focker420 had mentioned were 2011 releases too! And as far as GT5 is concerned, I'd be shocked if it came out next year, there's only one game I can think of that took longer to dev than that, and that game was called Duke Nukem forever!!! lol. I see we've fallen back into the fanboy pit! Well, not to enable people or anything but the update times on the ps3 are atrocious! And whilst we're on the subject of lieing, I seem to remember sony releasing a video for a certain game called killzone 2 that they tried to pass off as ingame (not the only time I might add).

yes but my point was it's not going to recognise random objects and put them in the game, like a cat for example.

OOOOh,like Sony never lied before, right? Maybe he should go back and watch some of Sony's 2005 trailers. p**s off,you f**king frenchie!
Guild_Navigator on 6 Apr '10
Saying Cage is impartial and not biased, and hasn't decided which platform his next game will be developed for is like saying the same thing about Cliffy B. For f**ks sake people, these two are total fanboy devs.

Don't see how anyone can call it either way with Natal until it comes out either for journos or the general public...

Yeah the videos of Natal are somewhat OTT and exaggerated, but any Android phone will scan a picture, and bring up a "clean" copy of the subject as well as google searching the image. If you do this in the right light you can get perfect results on things like movies, books, paintings... It even scans in and sorts contact info from a business card for your phone contacts. I honestly can't see skateboard texture imports being much more complex than that.

Thinking about it - I would say the biggest threat here (certainly for multiplayer) is Microsoft's self-policing.

Sure, taking a photo and using that as your board texture is a cinch (seriously Cage, technically that would be a piece of p**s, although in reality you'd be doing that in a menu screen not BANG into the game).

It would only be a matter of time before some joker would create a board with drawings of c**ks or the centrefold of a porn mag on it though...

Look at the way gamer pics are handled - you can take a photo of anything you like but only online FRIENDS can see that image and you need a premade pic for your public profile...

Likewise those name bans still stick in the craw...
Moribundman on 6 Apr '10
The video showed nothing too farfetched, he held up the board and it copied the board design into the game, wooo, that's been happening for years with ea gameface, and as others have mentioned Rainbow 6 games. Plus in those games it tries to map your face accurately taking hair, eyes etc into consideration, a flat skateboard would be damn easy in comparison. The only slight mistake was that his fingers should've been in the design really, but hey it's an already proved concept.

Maybe people are taking it the wrong way, but I didn't take it as natal scanning the board as a whole, that would be obvious bs, plus rather pointless as I'd really hope a skateboarding game would already have board meshes available to retexture!

Why not call out Sony on the misleading Eyepet ads which suggest you can draw anything and have it appear in the game, when really there's 3 or so pre-set shapes it'll recognise.

Natal has me interested, but I'll reserve judgement until after E3 when there should be a much better idea of it's capabilities, fingers crossed for something groundbreaking...

i found that milo more silly unrealistic,

how's it gonna deal with me sparking up a debate about whether morality being subjective is possible proof of no god but then where does the conscience come from?

and molyneux be damned i'm gonna try and teach it racial hate for a laugh
sexycaptaindave on 6 Apr '10

i found that milo more silly unrealistic,

LOL. I can see why it might be difficult to believe that Natal will deliver when they have Peter "the hype" Molyneux spearheading their promotion Wink

But David "the perv" Cage can't exactly say whether the tech delivers or not. Especially when he presents such a hollow and frankly risible example as the eminently doable skateboard thang.

Lets face it, the first thing most Xbox gamers will do is try to teach Milo swearwords or do obscene/inappropriate things for a laugh. And Lionhead/MS clearly won't let you do that. I'd be interested to see how they DO handle that though... Could be a laugh if they acknowledge what you're saying without playing along, and come up with some imaginative retorts.
Moribundman on 6 Apr '10
It didn't scan his fingers in.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that... the picture on screen had no sign of the kids hand holding the board up.
Suivatam109PS3 on 6 Apr '10
I have one question can you scan your bottom and send it to everyone on your friends list Question

Well this advertising seems like the Wii advertising or was I the only one that thought the Wii could do 1:1 motion mapping straight out of the box without having to buy another peripheral to be able to do that?

All ads are usually lies as such thats why they usually put disclaimers etc somewhere in small writing at the bottom of the screen.
lonewolf2002 on 6 Apr '10
literally i don't know why , you guys are getting so angered because David Cage said that the advertising for Natal is misleading. You can't disagree, for one the camera that is natal doesn't technically have the resolution to produce the skateboard in that hi res image, though i know its been done for years in rainbow 6, how s**t does your character look and how difficult is it to get it perfect. From what i understand all he's saying is that it makes everything acceptionally easy when in reality its not.

Before the retaliation comes in , yes i know loads of companies do this because its advertising.

Oh Mass Effect 2, you mean the xbox exclusive thats also on PC. Rolling Eyes I love it everytime and xbot mentions ME2 as a 360 exclusive, if thats the case then you can add another game to my list. Final Fantasy XIV.

Also I never said that you had to like the exclusives, but they are still exclusives nonetheless. So if I remove all the questionable 2010 release we're still left with MAG, Heavy Rain, God Of War 3, Last Gaurdian, The Agency, White Knight Chronicles, 3D Dot Game Heroes, DC Universe Online, and like it or not GT5 will also be released this year.

So all you're left with are 4 exclusives total. Sorry I forgot Splinter Cell and Fable 3, the two blockbusters that will tower over all the ps3's exclusives this year Rolling Eyes
Focker420 on 6 Apr '10
why do you always leave 360 games out this list on purpose for example the new monster hunter and a online game that will s**t all over ps3's mmo's its called APB and thats out this year not to mention all the great non major excluives that will come out like stoked 2, samurai sen showdown!

white night chronicles are you having a laugh all those games u mentioned will probally struggle to sell well like mag did Laughing the diffrence between that list is that the 360 games are blockbuster exclusives that will probally sell 3x as much as any of them games u mentioned i could see halo selling more than all them combined
dorian2011 on 6 Apr '10
Bow down to Sony!

You are not worthy! Wink
PS3_fannyboy on 6 Apr '10
dorian, you're talking about APB, the MMO that will be available on both PC and 360. Sounds pretty exclusive. Rolling Eyes

You probably think Mass Effect 2 is a 360 exclusive as well, right?

Also is the monster hunter you're talking about Monster Hunter Frontier?? The game that is currently out for PC. Its also going to be released for 360 in Japan only. Another rock solid 'exclusive'. Rolling Eyes

So both of the so-called exclusives you mentioned are actually not exclusives at all. And sorry I never mentioned stoked 2 and samurai showdown, I've never even heard of those games.
Focker420 on 6 Apr '10
well last i heard dc universe was coming to pc aswell so its not an exclusive and i see you avoided my point being that none of your games u mentioned will outsell any of the 360 games you mentioned, ps3 games dont sell to good and thats fact, take recent release bfbc2 which was majorly outsold by the 360 version, those brilliant exclusives you said are mediocre for 360 dont you know that forza 3 is still in the top 20 after like 6 months?
dorian2011 on 6 Apr '10
Quiet a few good and bad opinions being expressed here but all weve seen is mock ups. Its probably been picked up by someone already but when the kid 'scans' the board it should of scanned his fingers too. Not saying it's not possible but it was obviously a mock up.I Very much doubt MS would release total tat but ill reserve judgement till E3.
moss66 on 6 Apr '10
Love the way this article is about Natal and all you get is c**ks arguing about non-related exclusives. Very entertaining if somewhat overdone now. Laughing
lonewolf2002 on 6 Apr '10
Ok I would love to see how well Alan Wake, Splinter Cell, and Fable 3 sell. Halo doesn't count because we all know it will outsell everything, thats a no brainer. As for bfbc2, of course its going to sell more on 360, the 360 has the larger install base of the 2. You talk about quality, yet all 6 of your exclusives aren't even out yet.
Focker420 on 6 Apr '10
Focker420, you did know the agency is coming to pc as well?

Hardly a ps3 exclusive then(using your words)Rolling Eyes

GT5 will probably slip to 2011.
Last guardian is a definite 2011 game, the impression i'm getting is it's miles away from being finished.
I'm not convinced the agency will arrive on ps3 or pc either this year.
I don't think many people are expecting it to be much cop anyway.

I like my ps3 and 360, but the 360 has the bigger name exclusive titles this year.
It's probably already won the metacritic highest rated game of the year award in mass effect 2(i can't see 96% being beaten).
And halo reach will probably be the biggest selling game of the year.

2009 belonged to sony and the ps3, but the 360 seems to have hit back this year(unless all the exclusives like alan wake etc get crap reviews)Laughing
blagger on 6 Apr '10
Why would people think it reads in objects into the game just because of a sci-fi-type advertisement?
It's just to show that an object in the real world can be represented in the virtual world, and used almost exactly the same.
Nollog on 6 Apr '10
NATAL is a lie entirely the whole PROJECT is going downhill plus is still has no official name or price which i guess they will do at E3. PlayStation Move is going to wipe out this little project of Microsoft. David Cage noticed something really good and consumers know NATAL can't do anything they show.
Ivan_PSP on 6 Apr '10

Hey Dorian, do you really think that people will buy a 360 with a Natal, when millions still have a PS2 with an Eyetoy somewhere hidden away somewhere? With the same stupid party games? They've seen the trick Natal can, just like they've seen the Move's trick before. They are both just 2.0 versions.
Dewin on 6 Apr '10
well until my eyetoy can track my bosy in 3d and ditinguish colours and reconize my voice from my mates and scan stuff into games i think il keep tht in the cupboard, back to your cave troll
dorian2011 on 6 Apr '10
Says the biggest 360 troll of them all.

I just said that Natal is a better version. Or maybe you didn't get that "2.0" remark. No worries, it happens..... don't worry about it. Wink
Let me spell it out for you, BOTH Natal and Move will be used for party games and shovelware. Oh and Little Computer People 2.0 e.g. Milo. You can call me a troll, but i'm dissing both sides here.
Dewin on 6 Apr '10
lol my apologies this site is full of ps3 trolls its hard to reconise who is who now

wow you can talk to your console. exciting. it knows red from blue. exciting. you can scan a picture of something. exciting. it can track you jerkin off in 3d space. exciting. Rolling Eyes

so you can scan the bottom of your skateboard, thats entertaining for like 30 seconds. tell me how are you gonna do tricks?? I want to heelflip onto a rail, do a boardslide then casper flip into a manual. only to enter a bowl and do a 360 benihanna. please explain how i'm gonna accomplish this?? so much for a 'fun' skating game.

and have fun pretending you're grabbing an imaginary steering wheel, that'll be really awesome for forza 3 Rolling Eyes

have more fun with that than the imaginary screenshot simulator gt5 Wink

Jeebus, why don't you guys just get both consoles? Maybe then you'll be too overwhelmed with games to constantly bombard CVG with the sort of playground arguements I remember having when I was 9. Yeesh!

As I've said before- I'm interested in what this Natal malarkey will actually do- but I definately agree- we need to see some proper games being shown. Hopefully they'll be using it with Fable 3?
And at worst- if it does suck- I won't be buying it... Or that PS3mote either.

As for David Cage- maybe he's upset because his pervy boob fondling mini game idea was rejected from MS?

Note: I may or may not have made that up.
MrPirtniw on 7 Apr '10
cant believe ppl r buying in to this stuff?!
uve seen the wii, its the same with hd graphics.

problem is when all fanboys get so excited about this, the money that was going into the halos, killzones and uncharteds r gonna end up in the hands off the just dance studio.

think about it. do u rly wanna jump around waving ur arms when u play games?

ive got a sexy tummy

If anyone really believed Natal was actually going to be like that, they should probably have some Move controllers forcefully placed into several of their orifices for being such a clown.
NaththeNarc on 7 Apr '10
I thought it was a little bit lying to present it that way, because it will let think that they will something that they are not really close to getting.

What?

3 years ago when raindow six vegas came out it scanned my face and put me in the game.

2 years ago pro evo soccer 08 came out and can scan kits and add them into games for me to use.

1 year ago fight night R4 scanned my face put me in game and got facial movements with black eyes etc.

natal scans a picture of a deck and puts it on the underside of a skateboard in a game. that doesnt do anything just i see a 2d picture and this is lying about a product and not possible yet.

but i can interact with a freaking virtual pet on ps3. yet its not possible to scan a picture and use it in game cos its to advanced.
COME ON REALLY.......

must be me and only playing a press the button at the right time gameplay thats the future of the gaming industy.

wow i never realised tht so many people would rush in to defend something that they know nothing about. fair enough if you were a dev with one of the kits but i doubt that since your all arguing like kids over this and who has better exclusives. sounds like some people need to grow up a bit and start looking at things properly before they make a decision. iv noticed both sony and xbox fanboys that will believe anything bad about the their 'rival' as they see it. people have their preferences, in my opinion theyre both as bad as each other. and yeah advertising is generally a con, sony do it, and so does ms and every other company in business. maybe you should all wait for proof instead of thinking you know it all.
