When CVG sister mag PSM3 asked him if the 'robotic' AI from previous games had been banished in GT5, he replied:
"How close the AI can come to human lap times? That was the focus of development up until GT4. Now that has been successful to some degree, an attempt has been made to express more human-like behaviour in GT5."
Little is known about what improvements Sony has made to 2008's GT5 Prologue - Yamauchi said earlier this year that GT5 was '90 per cent' complete.
His new comments come as part of a eight-page racing preview spectacular in May's PSM3, which also features F12010, Modnation racers, Blur, Split/Second and more.
Do you remember in the 90's when games would have beautiful pre-rendered cutscenes... we used to think how wonderful it would be to be able to actually play in those cutscenes, rather than just watch them.
Those screens look great. Wonder whether it really will look that good. More to the point, whether it will play any good. Am I right in thinking they are doing damage to models this time around (at last). Or did I dream that as well...
Even though it has taken longer than I wanted it to, to release, i'm not that bothered. I REALLY want to play GT5 but i'm soooo backed up on games I have yet to complete that i'd rather wait for a complete GT5. No doubt its going to be the best racer out there and for many years to come.
Kazunori is quite clearly mad. Who keeps banging on about fantasy AI for fantasy games that don't exist? IT'S JUST A SODDING VIDEO! AI DOESN'T APPLY TO VIDEO, KAZ! YOU NEED A COMPUTER PROGRAM TO HAVE AI!
Does anyone remember before the PS3 came out their were pic's of GT in magazines, as if GT would release with the PS3, better not be pulling the same thing with the PS4....with the same game...
"Now that has been successful to some degree, an attempt has been made to express more human-like behaviour"
That ladies and gentlemen says it all. "an attempt" to make the ai more human like... They would rather spend all their time getting every car under the sun and makingit look s pretty as possible hoping people will spend 60% of the time watching replays. Polyphonic can suck my balls if GT5 is another repetition of bumper cars and rail track AI.
Ah, an AI update. Well done Polyphony. Just when you think they're out of excuses they pull out something new. That'll buy them maybe 3 or months more delay time.
Lets face facts, racing in real life is like watching Gran Turismos AI go around a track.
Sure racing online is different but that's because of those fools, not wishing to play the game properly, trying to knock you off the track for kicks.
I think Polyphony is aiming for the same accuracy of drivers in real life than virtual online drivers but I'll not argue that the AI would need tuned to make it more competitive against each other.
Here's a suggestion, if the games released and fanboys still blast the AI, play it online and race against other users in it's 16 player online modes! Stop crying for pity's sake.
I for one can't wait and appreciate the time the devs are taking on it, but Ill not accept further delays into 2011. I imagine Sony is calling the shots on a release and this will clash with the titan that is Halo (a reason Ill be getting another Xbox 360 since my last one choked on dust).
AI should be about making the cars "act" like other racers would. That does not mean sticking to the line, regardless of what goes on around you.
If GT5 is not a *vast* improvement over the Prologue, or the previous game, it will be a laughing stock (again) to everyone that isn't a die-hard PS3-owner, and has never driven a car (or a go-cart, or a bicycle) in a race.
It's pretty, sure, but if it's not *fun* and challenging, what's the point? Go back and play Nascar 2003 by Papyrus Racing (for example) and you'll drive door-to-door against 40 other cars, 3-wide into turns. If racing is just about sticking to the line, doing hotlaps, then it's just not racing. That's why F1 is so f**king boring 99% of the time.
Oh, and I do own a PS3. I just couldn't bring myself to praise a game like the Prologue, when it feels not-even-on-par with what was out on the PC over a decade earlier.
I'd rather race about banging mirrors with my friends in ugly, rusty Golf Mk 1's than drive behind 20 other guys in Zonda's or some other exotica.
Racing is about outthinking your opponent, putting him under pressure, having better strategy, conserving your tires, being careful after having put a tire on the grass, because that tire has less traction. It's about not flatspotting your wheels under braking. We had that with Live For Speed *years* ago (and many others) on the PC. GT5 Prologue had *none* of it.
All those people thinking GT4/5 is "the most realistic sim" or whatever - have you even *tried* racing a good PC-sim? Oh, and Live For Speed is just under half the price of PS3 games - and will run on old smelly hardware - in any resolution you want!
Yikes! Look at all the bashing about the A.I. driving in line. Not sure what kind of racing you guys watch save for a few individuals, but actual racing is about consistency and choosing when to attack to gain position. No matter how well an A.I. is designed, you will always have people crying about it. GT's old A.I. would never try to deviate from their predicted path, but Prologue's actually avoids you and will pass you, although to me it's not aggressive enough but it holds up well. As long as GT5's A.I. doesn't start driving like the idiots I've come across on FM3 online. I say let them stick to their lines and deviate only when it's actually functional and makes sense, some A.I. can have slightly different lines around a course, but the majority of race courses usually has an ideal line that make most use of tires and fuel consumption and lap times around a course. Deal with it, online is there when you need to "beat and bang" around, something I despise in racing, incidental contact is fine, but morons that take you out when they didn't have position is incredibly annoying.
It not the AI that is going to bother me in this game, its the new DLC, that will be available from day 1, he says its 90% finished, just release the sodding game, and release the other 10% as DLC for FREE to complete the whole game. I can just imagine the amount that will be available, as extra cost to us the consumer..... Example: 100 extra cars costs 75 pence per car = £75.00 Extra race tracks = £1 per track Online multiplayer DLC = £9.99 (Actual online component) 3D mode for use of 3D glasses = £9.99 3D glasses per pair £4.99 plus price of a Steering wheel = £??.?? (not sure of prices of wheels) and finally the actual game = £39.99
If you add it all up its going to cost a bomb to buy all this, you wait we will all be ripped off as per usual, if it ever does come out.
