Gears Of War 3 gameplay details leak

Edge reveals new cover system and underwater scenes
Bit disappointed about missing out on tonight's potential Gears Of War 3 reveal? Us too.

Just as well Edge is reporting a number of details about the title's gameplay, then.

A 'trusted US publishing source' has told the site that the developer's set to shake up the much praised - and imitated - Gears cover system.

New Locust enemies will reportedly have tentacle-like limbs which can reach out to player cover spots, while COGs will carry explosives that can travel beneath the surface to destroy enemy cover locations.

You can forget about pushing around burnt out cars too - mobile cover will come in the form of a hefty mech suit that offers not only protection but also the tools to dish out some carnage.

These cover system innovations will be on offer in both the singleplayer and multiplayer game, according to the site.

The game will also take place in the summer and feature brand new environments for the series, including underwater, so Marcus will have to break out the wetsuit.

Edge also speculates that jungle or foliage-heavy areas could appear in the game, as hinted at by Epic's Unreal Engine 3 demo at GDC in March.

There's no official word yet on Gears 3, so we'll just have to wait and see whether it's on the agenda for Cliff Bleszinski's US TV appearance on Monday night.

Edge has contacted Microsoft for comment.

@YCShinobi

Still want to bet that Gears 3 isn't about to be revealed by Epic?!

Can't wait to see how these changes affect the game and hopefully the summer setting will mean they'll add some colour to the environments.

Seems like a change in the right direction for Gears, the footage I saw of the jungle scenes using Unreal at GDC looked really good and I think it would be a blast to be tackling the Locust there.

Oh, and a possible Underwater Cole Train? Id pay the £40 just to see that alone Laughing .
StonecoldMC on 8 Apr '10
Well it's safe to say Gears 3 is the big announcement on Monday Smile
Mental on 8 Apr '10
I'm just wondering if it will count the 2 (maybe the 3rd) book as cannon to the story like EPIC once said it would.
G_R7 on 8 Apr '10
awesome stuff by sounds of it. possible battlefield style destructable envirmoments, underwater physics with the Unreal engine. dead space sytle enimies, big ass mech suits. i'm sure this is a james cameron + cliffy B game
mafiahobo on 8 Apr '10
hope edge r right - bring it Epic - bring it...........
singhcoventry on 8 Apr '10
Is this the same game Cliffy B said wouldn't be coming out on current gen hardware? Anyway sounds interesting, although I'm not to keen on the idea of a 'mech suit'. I'd much rather have pushable objects like the burnt out car mentioned etc. The underwater scenes will add some variety though. Loved the first two games, looking forward to this. Hope they don't butcher it with Natal junk though.

Off topic I know but Apple has just announced Iphone OS 4 with something called Game Center. According to Apple it will incorporate game achievements similar to those on Xbox Live.

Underwater level....

No.
roland82 on 8 Apr '10
I always thought swimming was introduced in the seccond, not the third in games.

Look ma, no face!

Underwater level? Jungle level? Cool, I await news of the Ice level and the Lava level, as well as the dark alternate-universe level.

That'd be cool. Slim Marcus & Co. voiced by polite Queens English speaking toffs and instead of curb stomping, finish off Locusts with a Care Bear Stare type move! Very Happy
Black Mantis on 8 Apr '10
Great. Because underwater levels always improve games, and never create frustrating and pointless 'will my character drown because he seems virtually incapable of swimming where I want him to?' moments...
BeauBeau on 9 Apr '10
Jungle level? Fine.
Mech suit? This is set in the future, and might control like the Brumak (awesome in my opinion), so fine.
But water level?! Unless it's in a Locust sub or something I am not approving. Marcus can't swim! Testosterone doesn't float.
The Sandbag on 9 Apr '10
I love gears, but underwater just makes me think 'meh'

if they want to introduce a 3d movement mechanic then space may have been more interesting, like having to re-capture the hammer of dawn or something

flippers, meh, but I hope I'm surprised
zombiesinmyhead on 9 Apr '10
Really Epic is gonna put out another one. they still didn't fix GOW2.
So, how can they even think of putting out another. There was nothing wrong with the way weapons worked in gow2 but all the cry babies the chainsaw is too strong blah blah blah;the only problem that was and still is THE LAG.When i was still playing it i was running 12mb set up just for the game system ONLY and still the game lagged.
So, as these new plans for underwater and jungle stuff sounds cool the question is DID YOU FIX YOUR JUNK SEVERS(as of yet you haven't in GOW2)????? Rolling Eyes
THETRUECAMEL on 9 Apr '10
Sounds great. People say a lot of things about Cliffy but he makes damn good games, and that's all I care about.
