Apple will launch an Xbox Live-esque online gaming network for iPhone and iPod touch later this year.
Called Game Centre, it'll allow users to invite friends to games, start multiplayer games through matchmaking, track achievements and compare high scores on leaderboards.
The news came as Apple boss Steve Jobs previewed the new iPhone operating system, OS 4, which will introduce over 100 new features for punters this summer.
These include folders to better manage and access apps, improved mail service functionality and iBooks, which recently launched on iPad.
openfeint is an independant company which designers can choose to integrate into their games, hence there aint that many games with openfeint functionality. Apple's network however should cover the majority of games creating a more merged and competitive feeling within the games.

Shut up bellendboy. The iPhone is the best handheld gaming device bar none. Games Centre is going to merge all the current systems in to one, i.e. openfeint, plus+, crystal and AGON.
/i take it you couldnt get an iphone then People love to hate it yet everyone and i mean everyone who has sat and played with mine for more the 10 minutes wants one!

To be fair its really not the best gaming handheld. Online integration like Xbox Live is a huge huge deal and nintendo really should wake up and start paying attention as people want these things. In saying that touchscreen only controls and horrendous battery life make gaming on a phone impractical. I do believe it to be the future but decent controls and double the battery life is a realistic minimum bar to set before that can happen.
I keep hearing how people "Constantly" game on their Iphone. Well these people must charge it up twice a day. I find I can just get through a day on my nexus one with heavy use and thats not including any gaming at all.
The iPhone is the best gaming handheld out there. Dig deep and look for some sweet ass gems out there, absolute gold mine for games. If battery drainage is upsetting you, then charge your phone as you play, not hard is it?
