Miyamoto: 2010 is 'great year' for hardcore Nintendo fans

Development legend talks up Zelda Wii and Mario Galaxy 2's arrival
Nintendo development legend Shigeru Miyamoto has heralded 2010 as a "great year" for the hardcore Nintendo fan.

Miyamoto referenced the upcoming Zelda Wii - which will be shown at E3 - as well as a new Pikmin game and Mario Galaxy 2 when making the claim in an exclusive interview with CVG.

When we asked what he'd like to say to Nintendo fans who feel let down by the lack of hardcore games in recent years, he told us:

"This year's going to be really great for the hardcore Nintendo player, especially with Super Mario Galaxy 2. It's action-packed software and when I say action-packed software, it's not just going to show you [pre-set] action movements in the 3D format. Rather, this is action-packed software that you can manipulate with your own will and your own control.

"I really want many households to be able to have a hands-on experience of Mario Galaxy 2. [Elsewhere] I didn't have any involvement in Metroid Other M, but it is on its way. And also we are working on the New Legend Of Zelda for Wii. So from this year to the next, I hope that the hardcore-type gamers are really looking forward to the multiple Nintendo titles on Wii. And also, we are working on the [new] Pikmin."

As much as I like Super Mario Galaxy, I have no interest in the sequel. I wouldn't call it a core game. Challenging - yes, beautiful - yes, hardcore - maybe if you have only ever played Cooking Mama, or Wii Music before... Rolling Eyes

I did see a video, on Kotaku, of gameplay from "Metroid: Other M" and that does look great!

@Padua

Could you please define "hardcore" for me?

I don't really play my Wii since there are few games that I have an interest in, but surely Galaxy was a hardcore game? It may have more childish visuals, but it was pretty hard to do everything in the game, I doubt everyone that played it did.

If Nintendo were to change Mario and the gaming world to a Resident Evil style theme with the same game mechanics, would it be any more hardcore?

I am not trying to pick a fight, but I am curious to know why this game would not be considered a "hardcore" game?

@Martin
Maybe it's because his mum had no problems with him playing Mario?

Since when was Nintendo hardcore?

Since when was Nintendo hardcore?

Dude! Shocked
Are you serious?

Some of the best games ever are hardcore Nintendo games.

I don't think that a game that is challenging is necessarily hardcore. I find plenty of casual titles challenging.

It is just my own opinion on what I call a core/hardcore game. I can't define "hardcore" for everyone the same way I can't define "game" for everyone. GTA or Final Fantasy don't interest me at all.

I prefer mature themes - like Metroid, World at War, even Deadly Creatures. They don't have to be violent or have extreme content. I'm also a great fan of casual titles like Raving Rabbids that work so well on the Wii. Cute and mature can work.

Galaxy is a brilliant game to watch and play. I didn't finish it because I lost interest in it. Saving the Princess, or rescuing mushroom men didn't matter to me. On the other hand, I struggled to the end with God of War 3 because Pandora and Kratos did matter to me.

I'm really happy with the Wii line up this year. After getting bored of FF13 after about 10 hours I picked up Red Steel 2 and I'm really enjoying it. Also, there is No More Heroes 2 in a few weeks. SMG2 I just can't wait for and I'm very p**sed off about it coming out the same weekend as th Download Festival!

Why do i ge tthe feeling the new Pikmin's going to be a 3ds launch title?

Hardcore = recycled material consisting of crushed bricks, blocks & mortar. Very useful for laying foundations.

Why do i get the feeling the new Pikmin's going to be a 3ds launch title?

Good call, Pikmin 3DS anyone?

pretty sure that a lot of people are totally reading the wrong thing into the word 'hardcore'...

he says that 2010 will be awesome for 'hardcore nintendo fans', considering we're talking about Shigsy then i'm almost certain that it has nothing to do with mature-rated/violent games.

besides the criticism of a lack of 'adult titles' (and i quote that because I don't think that a game has to involve extremem violence to be a game for older gamers), Nintendo have had a lot of stik from it's dedicated fan base about the lack of first-party titles compared to the number of crap shovelware games that come out.

would defo infer that he means 'hardcore nintendo fans' as people who have been long-time supporters of nintendo that want to see franchise titles come back, like Mario, Metroid, Zelda etc

not too fussed about Pikmin reference, but considering the 3 franchises above have games listed for thie year it might be time to finally buy a Wii...just give me an F-Zero announcement and the deal will be sealed for sure!

People sometimes get the misconception that 'Hardcore' means more mature. It doesn't of course. Mario can be seen more as a hardcore title due to the more complex nature of it.

So, with that in mind.... Is Daley Thompsons Dacathlon hardcore or casual due to all you do is waggle with a couple of single button presses? Interesting question there considering the simplicity of gaming back in the day. Smile

I think Scrabble is hard core Cool
Padua on 31 Mar '10
Yup. Lots of strategy there. Not just being able to spell either. Wheras Mouse Trap is nice and easy. More fun too Smile
kimoak on 31 Mar '10
Pin i completely agree with ur statment as to what miyamoto was saying, about hardcore nintendo fans, because i am one.I would stick with them till the end and would possible give up gaming without them if they went to the wall coz the other 2 companies do not other what nintendo do therefore some would class that as hardcore,i agree hardcore for me is Mario,Zelda,Donkey kong,(i wish)Mariokart Smashbros, they are hardcore title some may only like 2 of them, some all of them but each one has dedicated fan bases to sustain them,my top 3 personaly are Mariokart,SMB of all types and Smashbros they are my top 3,but zelda is the bees knees for many a adventurer. Very Happy
