Steam rival signs up to DRM

'Digital pre-owned' firm Green Man Gaming adds SecuROM
'Digital pre-owned' firm Green Man Gaming has signed with Sony DADC to use controversial DRM SecuROM on its new online sales platform.

Green Man Gaming plans to launch at the end of Q1 this year with 400 titles - and plans to offer over 2,000 games available by the end of the year.

"The digital distribution channel is increasingly important to a broad range of companies that are attempting to establish their products," commented David Berka, Product Manager for Software Digital Rights Management Solutions at Sony DADC.

"We see this partnership with Green Man Gaming and the integration of SecuROM into their revolutionary approach as an important evolution, as it allows publishers to increase new sales revenues through monetising the consumers games library."

SecuROM is used by 90% of major games publishers including Electronic Arts, Take2, Capcom and Ubisoft.

Paul Sulyok, Green Man Gaming CEO said: "This partnership dramatically accelerates our initial offer to include the majority of AAA PC titles that are currently available. We are looking forward to working with SecuROM and bringing PC gaming to a wider audience through Green Man Gaming and our retail partners."

ROFLMFAO - Steam's competition???

The mere fact that this new form of distribution uses SecuROM means that those who all ready are using Steam won't change service, nor will it encourage those who are new to use Sony's either.

Is Valve the only people who seem to care about the consumer???

I'm beginning to believe they did this for publicity.

Green Man Gaming
Before this they might have been good, but I never heard of them.
Now they are not so good but now I have at least heard of them.

*Facepalm*

Mind you, if they're cheaper than Steam then they might get a few sales. Steam does charge a bucket for the new titles Sad

But they also almost always offer the new titles at 10% off during pre-order stages and they also quite often offer free games with new titles. Steam is the best thing to come to pc gamers in years, don't try and deny that.

All my games have securom on. So it makes perfect sense if they offer a trade-in service. So that means I can sell all the s**t games I don't play to them....happy dayz!
Capt. Awesome on 31 Mar '10

2. Using SecuROM....FAIL

Understanding the feelings of an industry's customers *before* investing in a new company's flashy business plan. Priceless.

For everything else there's Mastercard... and Steam ^^
