Remedy: Alan Wake is 'our masterpiece'

Max Payne success allowed studio to take time on its 'labour of love'
Remedy has branded Alan Wake its "masterpiece" - and revealed that the success of its Max Payne games gave it leeway to take its time over the upcoming psychological thriller.

The title has been delayed numerous times since it was first announced by Microsoft, but a release date of May 18th in the US and May 21st in Europe has now been set in stone.

"Yeah, it's been a long process," admitted Remedy's head of franchise development, Oskari Hakkinen in an interview with Edge. "But [it's been] a labour of love.

"We were in a fortunate situation after the Max Payne games - due to their success, we could take our time with this project. We didn't foresee that this project would take so long, but what we did know is that we could only be as good as our latest game.

"So we always knew we wouldn't put it out until it was ready. This has been our baby, our masterpiece."

Check out our Alan Wake preview here.

You can read the full Q&A; with Remedy in issue 213 of Edge, which is in store now. Buy your copy of Edge and have it delivered to your door.

May 21st matey! Gonna be cool!!
Tonyb on 26 Mar '10
Who cares - they've had years to launch this game. It was meant to be launched with the 360 - there just trying to hype this rubbish up........
singhcoventry on 26 Mar '10
Time will tell. The last few trailers have knocked me back a bit. The guy runs from a man with an axe. Yet he can shrug off being hit by a huge flying water tank and a truck in tornado forced winds..... I'll see what friends say after release before making my mind up. I'm not being sucked into the hype again after the MW2 fiasco.

Of course its going to be their masterpiece, its going to have the Remedy Seal of Approval on the front cover!

CVG, the Game was never dated so cant have been delayed, a mistake that many many people make.

And gogo65uk, just to let you know, Remedy have stated that all trailers and any gameplay we have seen has been played in God mode, meaning Alan cant die or be injured. Have faith in Remedy, I think (hope/know) this is going to be a classic.

The closer we get to release the longer the days seem to be draggin in, still, not long to go now. Not long at all.

Laughing Yeah, it has been a LONG development lifecycle, but good things come to those that wait apparently! (and yes I'm looking at you as well GT5!!)

Remedy should make you a honorary member of staff for your unflinching faith in AW, or should that be get the police in for stalking? ShockedLaughing

You may not know this but, in America, April 20 is an unofficial pot-smoking "holiday". On the other hand, you may have noticed that we write the month before the day when we write our calendar dates.

Note the original poster's screen name and you'll realize immediately why he posted such a ridiculous question.

I'm just saying. . .
Bercilak on 26 Mar '10
Your masterpiece as opposed to what? Max Payne? the only other good game you guys have done..........don't get me wrong, it made me not hate the fact that society had gone bullet time crazy, but still.........I'm waiting to see something for Alan Wake that impresses me even a bit............

Didn't catch the sarcasm there, did ya?? Laughing Its only been announced 50 times.

I'm pretty sure April 20th is also Hitler's birthday, and the date of the Columbine school shooting in Colorado. But yes its mostly known for the weed. Cool
Focker420 on 26 Mar '10
Does anybody else think Alan looks like Johnny Knoxville in that promotional art pic?

Anyway, looks sweet, can't wait Very Happy

This is still coming to PC, right? Confused

Yeah but if it's related to the USA, nobody gives a s**t this side of the Atlantic...looks like Zionist-lover Obama has pushed that "wonderful" Healthcare plan through as well, just as well the weed IS available!

Who knows.. If it were up to me there wouldn't be one. We would all already be driving around in fully electric vehicles by now. The money being wasted on the current war is unbelievable.

Like I said time will tell. I think its going to be same as FFXIII a typical marmite effect some will love it and others hate it. Not long now Wink
gogo65uk on 27 Mar '10
I cannot wait for this.

I really hope it doesn't disappoint. After 5 years of development, I would expect heads would roll if it was s**t.
sas0875 on 27 Mar '10
Alone in the Dark 2?Anyone?
minimalistic on 27 Mar '10
It'll be far better than alone in the dark(which was pretty bad).

I can't believe the max payne team and all the time they've had on it can produce a crap game.
I'm expecting this to be the game heavy rain should have been(if i can call heavy rain a game).

Should be fun as long as they keep the variety up on the later levels.
blagger on 27 Mar '10
I contributed to the success that allowed them the stupid amount taken to develop this by buying the Max Payne games on PC. But they sold out to M$ and their xbox junk, after hyping up the game on PC as a showcase of multicore technology. So f*** them.

In 2006 it was impressive but the game looks crap now anyway.
LkS on 27 Mar '10
I think this looks a really interesting game and I didnt realise that it was being made by the creators of the Max payne games.

If its as dark and film noir as Max Payne II, it could be great.

Shame that its not multiplatform, as its really the only exclusive game that ive seen on the 360 that looks really makes me think that it would be interesting to play.
Barca Azul on 27 Mar '10
They should have called it Alan Asleep, coz its taken em that long to do. Zzzzzz
360365 on 27 Mar '10
what you talking about LKS didnt Max Payne get released on Windows, thats Mircosoft right?

I still dont understand the hype for this... Confused
SAeN on 27 Mar '10
Masterpiece? No, we, the gaming public will be the judge of that.

Anyway, if the game turns out to be s**te, 2+ million f**k-wits will still buy it due to the hype. Just like FFXIII.

lonewolf2002 on 27 Mar '10
One man's masterpiece is another man's disaster.
gideonseer on 28 Mar '10
Just wish I didn't have to buy it for my 360.
Controlling anything that moves and shoots with a controller is like controlling a tank with a twitchy turret compared with the instictive and truly analogue feel of a mouse and keyboard combo.

My bet though is that 6-8 months after the 360 "exclusive", it will be ported to PC after all.

I hope so, I cant stand shooters or 1st and 3rd person games with a bloody controller. "left a bit, down a bit..ooops up a bit..fire "Arrgghhhhh.
scritty on 28 Mar '10
After years of PC gaming I found the mouse and keyboard too mind numbing hence why I turned to console gaming. Them "twitchy unresponsive" controllers felt much more rewarding and add alot to the gaming experience. plus the quality of games is better and goes way beyond just "nice graphics" I'm still waiting on GW2 but for me at the moment pc gaming has nothing to offer. Dragon age Origins was another game I tried on pc before getting it on a console. Don't mean and disrespect after all its just my own preference.
