Tretton lashes out at Natal

Compares MS motion controls to EyeToy; Describes PS Move as "next generation gaming"
Sony's Jack Tretton has dismissed Microsoft's Natal movement control scheme, branding it a great idea that Sony "invented eight years ago."

Speaking with Gametrailers TV, the SCEA boss touted the company's PlayStation Move, saying: "ultimately this is next generation gaming."

When asked if PlayStation Move is an attempt to capture some of Nintendo's success, he replied: "We've kind of been looking for the right opportunity to bring motion gaming in a PlayStation like experience. We really feel that with the right combination of the PlayStation Eye and our Move controller we've really got the opportunity to bring realistic gaming with motion to consumers for the first time."

However, Tretton wasn't afraid of making a similar comparison between Natal and the PlayStation EyeToy.

"If you really want to get involved in playing with a camera I suggest you go out and buy a $99 PlayStation 2 and play some of the great technology we invented eight years ago," he said.

While Tretton refused to confirm what the company would announce at E3, he admitted that Killzone 3 was inevitable.

"We own Guerrilla Studios and they did a great job on Killzone 1 and 2 - I don't know when you'll see any announcements about it but I can promise you a Killzone 3."

What a tit.

But Natal needed way more cameras and IT WORKS better Mr. Tretton.

I think I'd rather spend money on the Natal software then get a old PS2 EyeToy Play.

I still must say, that add poking fun at the Wii and Natal was spot on.
gypscanuck on 20 Mar '10
All the big three companies copy each other anyway, they never admit it, but they copy and improve, that's the way things work.
Redimp on 20 Mar '10
The Wii balance board is a rip off.

It came out in the 80s for Atari and was created by the designers who created the Amiga chipset.

Way more cameras? It has 2!

And apparently, it doesn't work:

Having a dig at MS for Natal being a rip off of the Eye Toy whilst pimping his own motion control as the future when it looks to rip off the Wii?

Dont you just love irony?
StonecoldMC on 20 Mar '10
cant everyone in the gaming world just get along and accept that they will both be s**t?
Big_Bad_Bassist on 20 Mar '10
so if natals eyetoy i agree and move is next gen gaming

WHAT IS WIIMOTE AND NUNCHUCK AND WM+ AND BALANCE BOARD

CLEARLY NEXT NEXT GEN GAMING

I AGREE WITH YOU DUDE BUT THE CREDIT GOES TO NINTENDO NOT SONY

No... the Wii control method is not next gen gaming... it's "alternative gaming", that is all.
TheCrimsonFenix on 20 Mar '10
I went to visit my cousin today after she just had a baby the other week.

I was there for 2 hours and it didn't cry half as much as Tretton did in the minute or so it took for me to read that article.

Good effort.

Considering its not out yet, I dont see how anybody can come to any sort of conclusions ...

Is it some pre-requsite to work for Sony that you have to act like a tit ...

Wonder if it says on his CV in the interests section .... 'Generally being a tit'
originalbadboy on 20 Mar '10
jack tretton is a k**b, sony and there fanboys are very abusive, no wonder the ps3 has no community feel to it. anyone remember the funny ps3 demo when it first came out? " and you can flip this creature on its back for major damage"
dorian2011 on 20 Mar '10
...as are xbox fanboys.
TheCrimsonFenix on 20 Mar '10
well i dont see xbox fanboys giving people death threats like purple101 and calling people names like svd_grasshopper and hitmanbazza do. you do get some abusive microfanboys but sony fanboys are more abusive FACT, well on thi site
dorian2011 on 20 Mar '10
Dude I think you need to get over the whole purple101 thing.

You use that line whenever you try to diss the ps3's online community.

It really is time to move on.
Execute_Order66_ on 20 Mar '10
Why can't we all just get along? Crying or Very sad

I hope you all realise what Tretton is actually trying to say. Hes saying the Natal IS an eyetoy, The eyetoy can measure depth in a 3d space and track motions, it also has voice implementation in games. The ONLY thing Natal has over the eyetoy is it has face and voice recognition software.

As for Nintendo, Sony has been working on the PS Move technology years before the Wii even existed. Ever since the first eyetoy they've been developing the Move. Nintendo was very quick to release motion technology and because of that they have a huge sales base, but a substandard product.

Before you jump on me for being a fanboy, I do own a Wii. Its very unresponsive and rarely does what u want it to, when you want it to. Its great for cheap party games that dont require precision, but anything that requires accuracy it just doesn't stand a chance, even with the Wii Motion plus.
Focker420 on 20 Mar '10
Dori Dori Dori... that is not a fact...
TheCrimsonFenix on 20 Mar '10
He's right really it is steroid eyrtoy but then the Move is a carbon copy of the Wii remote so it all cancels out
Xavier WB on 21 Mar '10
you know,i really haven't heard any real slagging off from MS about Sony lately....its kinda like MS have become EA and Sony have become Activision right now,LOL

so where is Natel for the PS3 then Jack ?

oh & i suppose Nintendo's Nun-chuck controller was Sony's idea also, instead of saying Sony invented this & that why don't they concentrate on making sure that games work on the PS3 without needing constant patches to stop them freezing, crashing & sort out the useless PSN.

Jack Tretton = k**b

agreed they are the worst of the lot anywhere tbh, especially one i seen on you tube lately, the bs he spews is just damage control and illogical crap
Miss_Wacy on 21 Mar '10
If Jacks got anything to do with then im sure he'll claim that sony invented the world and all the planets. You can just imagine going to church on sunday and the vicar says, Now open your sony instrunction booklet at page 10. Amen
360365 on 21 Mar '10
Ultimately M$ started all the sh*t talking for weeks about the Move. Every single day it would be some new bs about Natal, then as soon as Move was unveiled at GDC I haven't heard a peep about Natal. Not one. It seems M$ has run off into a corner with its tail between its legs.
Focker420 on 21 Mar '10
see this is what i hate about the industry these days.
back in the day if i even thought of saying that about my companies competition well id be fired so fast my hat would still be spinning!
theres no professionalism its all dick waving.
since when did the video game industry turn into politics?
no, seriously?
honestly i feel like im in parliament house reading these interviews, in stead of explaining why their idea is better they just bag the competitions idea.
thats why my ideas better, because i said it is!

o, what the hell!
ok, so move is better than natal because move is "new tech" and natal is "8 year old tech" so thats why its better.
so does that mean that the wii motion plus is better than move?
well thats out, and has been for some time, were still waiting for move so by his logic it is.

love to see MR trettons PR answer to that one!

voodoo341 on 21 Mar '10
I'm not at all interested in either, but why are we comparing them? They're different technology and will be used for different kinds of games. Natal will be used to hit balls coming at you. Move will be used for shooters. Eyetoy will be used for Eyepet.

If we ARE comparing them, though, I haven't heard about any games coming out for Natal... While both KZ3 and Socom 4 will have the move.
Fractal on 21 Mar '10
Natal will never be as popular as a good old handheld controller. It will be fun for a few months, then you will get bored. Tell me, does anyone still play with the eyetoy...?
Also, how many gamers out there traded their Wii for an xbox or Ps3? Quite a few I'd imagine.

You're as bad as he is.

Have you ever noticed that when Sony copy something, they have been working on it for years. If that is the case, then why is the Move their second attempt at motion control on the PS3? Are you forgetting the quickly put together and largely unpopular SixAxis which Sony thought up at the last minute to combat the Wii?

Working on it for years, laughable.

We'll see at the end of the year which is the better addition to both PS3 and 360. But one thing I will say is that both systems better have something special in software terms if they want gamers to make quick purchases and turn them both into viable developer options, otherwise we'll end up with a Wii Plus situation and just one game to play with it.
bazzatuk on 21 Mar '10

sony seems to be getting a little too c***y lately, i get the feeling this years e3 will be very interesting
Miss_Wacy on 21 Mar '10
Why do people take this crap so seriously? Is the head of SCEA going to come and praise a rival motion control device just after they revealed their own one?
THX-1138 4EB on 21 Mar '10
ps360conspirasy: the return of wiiboy. yea!!!
on topic, sony is right bout the eye-toy, but it did'nt work well (or at all). natal had better be a quantium leap foward over eyetoy or else it'll suck harder that a turbo charged dyson
collyboy187 on 21 Mar '10
Anyone that thinks the Move is exactly like the Wii then watch this video. Good luck with the current Wii system ever accomplishing this. And this is just one of the many features capable with the Move.

Heres hoping that sony and MS can bring more adult gaming with thier efforts. Kind of fed up with wii and party games. Hopefully ps move and natal can build on Wii tech and bring somthing a little more exciting into the mix.

well i dont see xbox fanboys giving people death threats like purple101 and calling people names like svd_grasshopper and hitmanbazza do. you do get some abusive microfanboys but sony fanboys are more abusive FACT, well on thi site

Dorian,Dorian , Dorian , im watching you pal , didnt you call all ps3 owners paedophiles , so obviously a little hypocritical, you cheeky poppet.
Im a sony fanboy , but more a tech fanboy, im saying Natal does look something special, really like the sony wagglestick too, whereas the eyetoy on ps3 has been very poorly supported. In fact crap , a joke and wasted opportunity, only eyepet and eye of judgement demonstrates anything worthy of a next gen eyetoy experiance.
I think before anyone from Sony , talks about eyetoy they should play some of the games , for an hour in a room, they would feel a little sheepish ,look at that tower game , and the club visuals "experiance", my god what utter utter s**t.
Wheres skype for the ps3, wheres all the cool eyetoy ps2 titles , like Demons Soul- sort it out
Oh yeah and Dorian ive got a bone to pick with you, i happened to mention that a certain virtual world had come out of beta (maybe like twice),and you went all funny, and bit my head off, chill out Brother.
martinawatson on 21 Mar '10
Why all the Hate. So Sony copied Nintendo again.

At least we know it should work ok. Being able to patch support for older games is a great idea and will give Move some legs while we see if anything of merit is going to be made for it. God knows the eye toy never got anything but gimmicky crap.

However since the PS3 has got the grunt under the hood to entice more traditional devs hopefully we'll finally see motion control taken seriously to a greater degree.( not theat there aren't some fantastic games on the wii, they're just sadly washed away in a sea of cheap crap and don't get the coloumn inches and ad space they deserve)

I think what we're all missing here as well is that all fanboys are w****rs. Regardless of which company they jack off to.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 22 Mar '10
im sorry but (this will make me sound like a fanboy) shut up sony we know your getting better but stop slagging of your oposition stuff i mean fisrt its with the exclusives and now natal. even if natal is slow or buggy its better then your motion control because its already been done with a whole console devoted to it. yes u can move forwards and back better(slight improvment)but im sorry but u have not done natal 8 years ago. the eye toy just regestered movment. wii and move took the next step but sadly natal is a few ahead.
