Shigeru Miyamoto has told CVG that he sees the invention of Microsoft's Project Natal and Sony's PS3 Move as a "great honour" - because they offer user experiences that Nintendo "originated".
Speaking in a huge interview set to be published on CVG soon, Miyamoto revealed that Nintendo is not focused on competing with its rivals' motion devices.
The design of Sony's PS3 wand Move appears to have been influenced by Nintendo's own Wii Remote - an idea Sony has already made efforts to refute.
When asked what his thoughts were on Natal and Move, Miyamoto told CVG: "Nintendo should welcome the opportunity when or where something we have originally tried is intensified by somebody else, because that means that other people are trying to starting to show their appreciation for whatever endeavour we have made in the beginning.
"The user experience we have created is going to be intensified by the advent of new machines from other companies. It's a new experience that we originated. So we really see it as a great honour."
Miyamoto referenced Wii MotionPlus, saying that Nintendo had improved on its own existing technology in the past - but that its focus is coming up with brand new concepts.
He commented: "What is very important for Nintendo is always thinking in terms of the appropriate types technology for us - unique and unprecedented entertainment to come up with technology that's something new. That's our mission.
"It needs to be something very different, something unique. That's something we always look for. Of course, sometimes we need to intensify the forms we have already come up with, but that's not the first priority for us. Competing with other companies in that category is never our top priority."
OK, ill start the rage, Miyamoto and Reggie need to shut the f***king arrogant mouths about how "honoured" they are that the other companies are ripping from them. I used to love Nintendo so much but these buisness types have made the Ninty that gave a crap into the Ninty that thinks that the half- assed approach will keep them going for ages. But under all of their bulls**t they probably are crapping themselves about how Sony and Microsoft will soon own them on everything over than prices. I sound like a dick dont I?
Good to see Miyamoto acting as graciously as always. I think that Nintendo/Sony/Ms' Western divisions could learn a thing or two about humility from their Eastern counterparts.
Now reading the article propely i feel foolish for ranting
Good, cus yeah, you did sound like a bit of a dick tbh.
I was talking to a mate the other day about the way Nintendo is going. He was saying roughly what you're saying, with the added spice of betraying the hardcore n stuff. I don't necessarily disagree, but look at the Gamecube. I loved that system, some great games on there, but because of appearances and marketing it suffered badly last gen. When the hardcore isn't going to keep them highly competitive, why shouldn't they go another way?
On the topic at hand, I'm semi glad Sony and MS are going this way, as it gets me excited about the next gen. If all three are on similar routes to expand physical interaction, maybe we can finally see a virtual boy again in a few years

Thats what I'm talking about
But anyway, competition is good for business. It makes people try harder than they normally would. I doubt we would see the quality in our games/consoles that we currently have if there was no competition involved.
And the great man should feel honored. Love them or hate them (if you feel you must) Nintendo have pretty much always led the way innovation wise and have shaped the way we all play games today. Whether that is by motion control or a standard pad. It is normally Nintendo that introduce these standards to the home console market.
Just look at your Playstation and Xbox pads;
D-pad - NES 4 face buttons in a diamond formation - SNES Shoulder buttons - SNES Analogue stick - N64 Rumble/Feedback - N64 Wireless - Game Cube
Microsoft have led the way online, Sony with the use of discs and BluRay. But it is Nintendo who have helped shape this industry and with the announcement of the 3DS it looks like they are still leading the way forward.

I like this post! Well put.
Poor Nintendo. All they did was go after the casual/family majority instead of the core minority. Shame on them for releasing a best-selling system that makes a profit, resists calls for price drops, gathers dust in plenty of cupboards yet still sells shed loads
I prefer playing on the PS3 but not when family come over. Kratos is a lousy baby-sitter

I know it's picking hairs but:
Analog stick - 1970s Consoles or Sony's Flight Stick (1 year before N64). Plus N64 was a Digital stick not Analog (not that that matters much). However the use of two sticks as it is today was Sony just after the N64.
Wireless - Using the same method as the WaveBird there was the Atari CX-42 for the Atari 2600. Also there were a few other efforts before this using IR.
Nintendo aren't always coming up with new ideas, but they are very good at getting them to market and changing the way people game. Very few original ideas now anyway. It's all about finding new ways improve existing ideas. Or make Virtual Reality and holograms...

I wouldn’t say it’s picking hairs, I always welcome constructive criticism.
1970’s consoles did use that tech, but it was somewhat wasted on the basic games of that era, and it was Nintendo that re-introduced the ‘analog stick’ back to the games console market with the evolution of ‘3D polygon games.’ On further research, I acknowledge your information about Nintendo’s N64 Analog stick actually being a digital stick – Though even to date, Mario 64 is still one of the finest examples of why these sticks are far superior to the old D-pad interface.
Sony’s Flight Stick was indeed analog, but it was an expensive niche accessory, and not the standard main controller bundled with the console. The introduction of two analogs was down to Sony and is very instrumental in the way we play games today. To be fair Sony also introduced the L3 and R3 buttons – by clicking the sticks down. They also added two further shoulder buttons, analog buttons and the ‘prong grip design’ all of which are used as standard today!
You are correct on the history of IR and RF wireless methods, with RF first being used in the Atari CX-42 – so I stand corrected there. I agree that Nintendo aren’t the ones coming up with these technologies but like you say, they are good at getting them into the home and mass market, changing the way we play and interact with games. So why not make Virtual Reality and Holograms, when everyone else seems to think that wearing shades indoors is the future of gaming.

Umm maybe with portable gaming. But Sony were the first to announce they would be working on 3D gaming last year. This June is the firmware update that has the 3D implementation for PS3.
Reggie can suck my ass, he's a useless person who has no redeeming qualities, he comes across as a smug c**t. This guy I can put up with, I'm no fan of Nintendo, but at least he's rather civil, and he's praising the competition.
Microsoft started online gaming on consoles - However, Online Gaming started YEARS on the PC before it came to consoles. Not sure if it was Microsoft who started that or not, but it may be.
