Some love it, some hate, but despite the mixed reviews Final Fantasy XIII sold over a million copies in the US and set a new series-best for first-week sales, according to Square (via Gamasutra).
Square confirmed earlier this month that it has shipped five million copies of its RPG, with nearly two million of those having sold in Japan in December.

Considering this game has always been established with the Playstation, doesn't surprise me that it shipped more. And the fact it was made for ps3 and ported to xbox may have something to do with it.
But still, XIII is pretty good so far, Only played it for like 4 hours. GOWIII has gotten in the way
Not fussed about the sales, although I am glad in a way because it means better future support for other Square games.
I'm loving the game though. I've just reached the part of the game with the open map and it is really liberating, especially after the 20 or so hours of (mostly enjoyable) linear, story led gameplay.
It wasn't really survey that said 360 would outsell ps3, more some little heard of website trying to drum up some publicity by making comment on a topical issue
i got ps3 version,i also have a 360,but its better on ps3 and it shows limitations of dvd compared to bluray.360 was making ps3 look silly for years, but now programmers have got the ps3 games like uncharted 2 and nowff13 show ps3 is in a different league technically, but xbox live is better than psn but psn is catching up,also ive heard sony are going to start charging for psn in order to make it a far better service,
Well done final fantasy 13 and Square Enix, the game completly deserves it, its amazing, it might of got its bad reviews by some people but that means nothing the game is truly amazing, the best game this year so far. Square enix have tryed something different which is what gamers and reviewers have been wanting this gen for ages and in my opinion its worked and they've developed a truly amazing game with a gripping and interesting story, really likable characters. The graphics go without mentioning there stunning! So well done Square Enix!
Its a hard question that because its all a matter of opinion, but in my opinion yes its better than both of them, I admit it takes till around chapter3 before it clicks and before your givien most of the battle options. But I think this is because the battle system is so deep and complex they can't just put it all in straight away as you'd wonder what the hell to do. But in the end the battle system is by far the best I've played in a final fantasy and it really takes strategy to beat hard enemies, like know when to use your paradigm shift to change the roles your team take on while battleing, its intense and sometimes hard but very satisfying once you get into it. I'd personally reccommend it but like I said before its a matter of opinion,it is also nothing like those games you mentioned
still umming and arring over whether to rent it or not.
A good friend of mine told me its utter s**te and he's a huge rpg fan and tends to know his stuff.
So i'm asking the obvious question. Is this better than Dragon age or Mass effect 2 or are the three games uncomparable?
Mass Effect 2 and Final Fantasy are really different sub-genres of RPG. ME2 is more an action RPG with 3rd person shooter elements and I wouldn't say comparable.
Final Fantasy XIII is the usual Japanese story telling, with far too dialogue and even though it appears real time in terms of combat, pretty much still maintains the traditional turn based FF formula. However it changes virtually everything around, no limit breaks etc, you get a stagger bar and paradigm classes you can switch at any time on the fly (which is fundamental to success). However the combat system is actually quite intuitive once you understand it and that is where I have issues.
I don't think it does a good enough job of explaining those mechanics to new comers ass it all comes across as a little confusing initially and you are still getting the odd tutorial even 5-6-7 chapters into the game and many times what those teach you would have come in bloody useful in the chapters before.
Towards the end it does get better and you are rewarded as you start to understand it, it all just starts a little oddly and the linear path is a bit unusual but it didn't bother me that much.
I'm in the 'FF13 haters' camp at the mo. I'm only 5 hours in but think this is total garbage, annoying voice acting, condecending gameplay (first 2 hours is like a Jrpg for under 5's), s**t story. Apparently it gets better after 25 hours, but will I sell it before then? It's a shame really as I enjoyed previous FF games and have quite a few JRPG's in my collection.
It is a beautiful looking game though and I enjoy watching the cutscenes.

The story is told in a very backward way, and by that I don't mean stupid, I mean it's literally told backwards. So you start off thinking WTF is going on, then it fills in the blanks as it goes along. You also miss out on much of the details through not reading the Datalog thing.
I think it takes about 10 hours before the game starts giving you control over things and you start having to think more about tactics.
Like I said earlier it introduces you to tutorials later in the game that would have saved you a lot of trouble earlier on if it had just told you more details from the start of the game.
