Star Wars: The Old Republic - Bioware's biggest ever game

Title is larger than Mass Effect 1 & 2, Dragon Age and KOTOR combined, says studio
Bioware has revealed that much-anticipated MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic is its biggest ever game - and contains more content than all of its previous Triple-A titles put together.

Speaking to the all-new edition of PC Gamer in the magazine's April 'MMO issue', creative director James Ohlen said:

"It's the biggest game I've ever worked on. I'm surprised at the enormity of it every other week. We're creating more content than Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 1, Dragon Age and Knights Of The Old Republic put together, and throw in Baldur's Gate, too."

LucasArts has previously confirmed that the Star Wars: The Old Republic release date will arrive in spring 2011.

You can read the full six-page feature on Star Wars: The Old Republic in the latest issue of PC Gamer, which reached subscribers today. It'll be in the shops by the end of the week.

they say girth is more important than length.

I really want this game to be good.

Please, please, please....

It's an MMO. It HAS to be huge. I would not be surprised at all that it's bigger than those combined. How will it keep people subscribing otherwise.
kimoak on 8 Mar '10
This game either is gonna be the MMO of 2011 or a complete and utter failure imo.

sorry im allergic to bulls**t.

MMO's have to be large scale, otherwise they wouldn't be able to cater for thousands upon thousands that play them day in day out.

With the Mass Effect games, Dragon Age etc it merely is a few of the same models setup randomly (ie: all those crates, all those trees) where as with an MMO you need different styles, different layouts, different citys and then the amount of character customization too.

He is honestly correct on saying put it all together, and you'd still need more.

aren't mmos normally a released work in progress. It seems like that they are fronting up a sizeable amount form the get go - i wonder how much content will be added post release then?
quintus on 8 Mar '10
This was announced in 2009 and is coming out in 2011, so going by game development terms (in terms of how much you'd be able to do for that time period but for a 360 game etc) it will definitely be chock-a-block.

Much better then what Star Trek Online has.. that game shouldnt of even been classed as an MMO at its current state.

But then again, Bioware are making this.. and these guys are definitely not shy of content-full worlds.
KMakawa on 8 Mar '10
How many more times do people need to hear this: bigger is NOT necessarily better!

In fact, the only people who say that are those guys with really tiny penises.

And while we're on that subject, phrases like: "it's nearly finished", go hand in hand with: "honestly, darling, it's eight inches!"
Karis on 8 Mar '10
It has been in development a fair time before they announced it, like most games. It is no surprise that it is their biggest game yet, it would have to be to sate the appetite of MMO players the world wide. I just hope that it is successful, the MMO business is a dodgy one, though the fact that Bioware are behind this does fill me with a lot of confidence.

i can't speak for Balders gate, but it took me 35 hrs to complete Mass Effect,28 hrs for Mass Effect 2,15 hrs for KOTOR and 18 hrs for Dragon Age

surely its ten times bigger than all those put together,or else it would be one hell of a short MMO

Just depends how you play, i cant remember how much time i spent on KOTOR 1 and 2 but i do know i spent 120hrs playing Dragon Age, around 68hrs on Mass Effect 1 and currently 16hrs into Mass Effect 2.

If the content is their play, its not the developers fault that you rush through it missing all that content/side quests/extra missions. Each to their own though i suppose.

I am presuming that this will have a monthly subscription?
mogel94 on 8 Mar '10
Yeah it's a monthly subscription, but Bioware have said they haven't decided how much they're going to charge yet.

I wish this was just a buy once thing like Guild Wars, but alas its not, and you can't blame Bioware really 'money makes the world go round' and all that.
bubblyofart on 8 Mar '10
Shame about the subscription, i was going to buy this but i just cant afford monthly payments as well as all of the other stuff i need to buy. Maybe i could start buying food in rations

i had the guides, and yeah i did all the side missions.....but 120 hrs on Dragon Age?...i couldn't stand how much time i put into it,thought it was their worse console game

but still, even with your times,it would be a very short MMO

i spent 54 full days on Final Fantasy 11(that's 54 x 24 hrs)..and didn't even get half way through the main story(not included the expansion packs)

I'm a *MASSIVE* Bioware fan and so of course I'm excited by the idea of a Bioware MMO. Not to mention KOTOR was great so all the better.

That said, am I the only one to be so concerned about the very cartoony nature of the engine?

:/

its kind of the norm for MMOs,they don't usually have mega fantastic graphics, prolly cos it would take even more power to run on their servers....looks very KOTOR to me(which is no bad thing)

one thing that does worry me though,is that lets not forget that this game will be running on EA servers Crying or Very sadConfused
