The latest issue of the Official PlayStation Magazine is in, and it's got the first review of God of War 3, giving Kratos' third outing a 9/10.
Is it better than the recent rip-off (but pretty bloody good) Dante's Inferno? Yes, says the review in issue 43 of OPM, and it even destroys the first two GoW games too.

"They fall a long way short of the series' long-awaited PS3 debut. Like, a really, really long way - this is on a scale PS3 has never known. It makes not only its predecessors seem small, but the competition too. Darksiders and even the very decent Dante's Inferno have nothing to compare with Kratos' almighty comeback," it reads.
So why a 9 and not a 10? "The game is inches from scoring 10/10, and it's only the familiarity of the core gameplay (standing on the shoulders of giants) that makes it feel less than the very, very best. But it's definitely the biggest, and if this is the finale (and the corpses littering the stage by the end of the game suggest it might be), then God Of War III gives PlayStation's toughest hero the send-off he deserves," says the review.
The demo alone is 10/10. I'm getting really fed up with reviewers knocking off points for familiarity (Bioshock 2, and now GOW3). When the core gameplay is already fantastic then that shouldn't be a reason for knocking the sequel. Uncharted 2 was bascially the same as 1, but that didn't get knocked for being familiar.
Hate to be pedantic, but if that were an oasis reference, then it would have been "standing on the shoulder of giants", not "shoulders". On topic, GOW3 will be a day one purchase.
It wasn't some reference to a s**t band mate, it's a well known phrase and relevant pun in regards to GoW...
Anyway, I got this magazine in teh post today and there is a maassive feature on it and the review is about 5 pages long. Basically, it's going to be epic. March 19th cant come soon enough.

I agree. You've got two sides to this coin, and both are bad. One side is that review scores like 7s are now becoming 'average' or 'okay' and more and more games score into the 9s. The second is as you mentioned, the trend of scoring a game down due to 'familiarity' - surely this is the nature of the sequel. I think UC2 got so much prestige because it is an amazing game both technically and gameplay wise. By the sounds of it so is GoW3 so I don't get it. Not to mention OPM gave MW2 10/10...for what? It isn't as good as CoD 4 in its overall execution but...hype = good scores.

I never understand this as a criticism, did they expect GOW3 to feature a mario kart style sections. It's GOW3,it's supposed to be familiar,it's a franchise. Will BFBC 2 get marked down because you still shoot guns like in previous editions, were in an era of gaming were very few games are new and unique, especially big budget 3D games.
I don't disagree with the score,not bitter as it's a 9 can't wait to play the game,if it got a 6 I wouldn't care,I just don't get why familiarity is a problem,especially as it's the end of kratos?? if this was GOW 6 modern blade fest 8 i could understand,but not at version 4.
This looks like an essential purchase and I reckon i'll be there on day one. I'll wait for a non biased review before making my final decision though. Official Magazines are totally not to be trusted for the big tentpole releases.
good to know somebody loves Oasis there cvg.

It's a well known quote most popularly heard from Isaac Newton fella. Oasis copied it but got the quote wrong.
"If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants."
9/10 is a cracking score, but it feels like they've invented a reason to knock off a point. For crying out loud, OPM, you gave MW2 10/10!! For What?? Doesn't the same argument apply in that case??

Video Game Journalism... pah.
MW 2 also features a MP portion. Also, previous games were on PS2, so changes can be expected. A HI-REZ pong sequel would be wrong now, for example. That's out there, but maybe you'll get the point. Though, GoW III does seem like it is more than what previous games offered, when it comes to some things, even outside of GFX. Maybe the combat mechanics are the same, but that's not all it has. And yeah, you still shoot the same in MW2...9 is still a great score. Maybe they simply got the reasoning wrong, where it should have been the lack of MP, odd as it would be to expect that.
ALSO - there goes the OPM BIAS some seem to use to discredit PS3 exclusives

it was actually when noel gallagher was p**sed in a pub in camden and it was around the side of a circular of pound coins at the time that he actually bothered to read quoting newton, and gallagher just remembered it wrong when he woke up and the rest is history as they say... they are over-rated as well, stone roses are a miles more important band.... (look at my avatar lol)
This is as bad-ass as it gets. I don't care what score it gets. I have GoW: collection and having a blast. This is GoW in overload. Bayonetta is great, but this has a rawness to it no other game can match.
who cares what score a game got, a 1 for you might be a 10 for another person, its not the score but what is contained in the review, and you should read a few different reviews to get a better picture of a game.
