Next Splinter Cell 'could be a PS3 exclusive'

Conviction follow-up is up for grabs between platform holders
The next Splinter Cell title could appear exclusively on PS3, according to the creative director of upcoming series outing Conviction.

Splinter Cell Conviction is set to launch exclusively for PC and Xbox 360 this April, due to a deal arranged between Microsoft and the game's publisher, Ubisoft. But that deal ends with Conviction.

Asked whether the Splinter Cell franchise has a future on PS3, Ubisoft Montreal's Max Beland told Edge:

"I don't see why it wouldn't. I'm not involved in the business deals. I joined Splinter Cell after the exclusivity deal with Microsoft had already been signed, but there's no reason why Splinter Cell couldn't be on the PS3. Conviction? No because of the exclusivity deal. I know people keep talking about maybe, maybe not, [but] at Ubisoft Montreal I haven't seen anyone working on PS3 for Conviction.

"[The next game] is open to new deals," he added. "If Microsoft wants an exclusivity deal, they don't call me, it's Yves [Guillemot, Ubisoft CEO] dealing with the business people. But yeah, I guess we could even be a PS3 exclusive if there's a deal that makes people happy there."

So the "link of heart'" between the franchise and the Xbox platform Ubisoft spoke about last year isn't quite as strong as the company previously had us believing. So when might we see the next Splinter Cell game after Conviction, which has been in development for more than four years?

"This is a long-term vision, so I'm not telling you that yes, in a year you'll have another Splinter Cell, but right now the direction Yves gave us and where the company is going to go is, at one point, if the direction doesn't change, yes you're going to be seeing Splinter Cell games, just like Assassin's Creed games, just like anything else, released a little bit more often."

If you're eagerly awaiting Conviction's April 16 release date, why not check out our most recent hands-on with the single player game and the meaty co-op mode.

I think Sony would rather invest in a new games franchise than have to outbid Microsoft for a series which is becoming a little stale now.

I certainly can't see Sony making a splinter cell game a PS3 exclusive any time soon. Only really played one Splinter Cell, and whilst i liked it i wouldn't feel like i was missing out on a gaming experience if i weren't to play it, especially with Hitman soon to be here.

Always hearing about the co-op mode, but can anyone confirm whether the versus mode from previous games is still there in multiplayer?

It's not in there I'm afraid, although in this day & age I'd suspect that it will arrive as DLC.

Just put it on both consoles then everyone wins and Ubi makes more $$$ from game sales!

Seems sort of ridiculous to have a series being exclusive to both consoles, perfect way to annoy the fans really.

Is SC Conviction worth buying?

It's a small game with not much to it compared to the new bluray games coming out. SC Double agent was great and worth buying but Conviction is half the size. I don't think I would be interested in buying a game that takes 6 hours to complete.

Uncharted 2 is everything a video games should be. Big, fun, beautiful looking, great story. God of War III looks ground breaking and breath taking. GoWIII is around 40GB!!!

Video games are changing. Technology is changing. UBI made a big mistake with embracing XB360. They are now locked into a dying console and are being forced to put out one of their biggest names without going ALL-OUT in it's development.
I hope they don't ruin the SC franchise.

What?

They're two totally different games. I know that the term 'Stealth' tends to be used for both, but that's about it in terms of any remote comparisons. Also, how exactly has Splinter Cell - as a series - failed?....it's been critically acclaimed and sold very well. Has it purely failed because you don't like it?

Personally, I think they should just release it on both consoles. That would surely maximise profits and keep fans interested in it.

Buying exclusivity is nothing to do with what Gamers want and all about market manipulation.

Anti-trust laws should be extended to protect Gamer consumers from corporations dictating which game we can play on what console. Of course they should keep exclusivity over what their own first party releases, but if there is demand and the developers are prepared to supply then let market forces decide which version is better already!

Nice comment from someone named after a childs sweet.

Not that it matters, but my opinion is that it would not bother me in the slightest. Just because there would be more money in releasing it across the platforms it does not qualify as a reason to be excited.

Gamers are getting screwed on a regular basis, this is now another example of that happening again.

What exactly did it copy hmm? please do tell me.

That its a stealth game?, MGS isnt stealthly in anyway certainly not compared to the original SC.

It has a male hero perhaps?, but then again there are thousands of games with that.

Hmm maybe because it has guns and gadgets?.

Seriously i would love to know exactly what SC copied from MGS.

And i love both series but i think SC has more style and fun than MGS, and SC Chaos theory beats any MGS game out atm, in my opinion ofcourse.

Castle Wolfenstein, originally available on the Apple II in 1981, employed stealth elements as a focus of the gameplay. Players were charged with traversing the levels of Castle Wolfenstein, stealing secret plans and escaping. Players could acquire uniforms to disguise themselves and walk by guards undetected. The game spawned a sequel, Beyond Castle Wolfenstein, in 1984. It included some additions such as a dagger for close-range kills and a greater emphasis on disguising in enemy uniform.

I guess by your logic SVD, the original MG copied Castle Wolfenstein then? And therefore SC copied it too?

MGS and SC are 2 totally different games. Love em both (except DA which was just horrible).

He's retarded. Such typos are to be anticipated as much as they are expected... Wink

I think THX has a good point. It's highly doubtful Ubi would desert the PC when every episode of "CS" has come out on that platform to date... Smells a little bit like Ubi trying to spook MS into coughing up more dough to keep the series 360/PC exclusive.

Also I don't recall a PS3 exclusive that wasn't developed in-house and/or specifically to take advantage of the cell and the blu ray format. Hence if it CAN be done on the PC then Sony aren't going to spunk out denarii to keep it on PS3/PC.

That's the GOOD (and also somewhat elitist) thing about the PS3 - it's not just "keeping up" with current PC tech as the 360 arguably is, but it's carving new ground. Hence reluctance of people not being funded by Sony to put time and effort into learning their craft all over again to take advantage of new tech.

Sony would never pay for a joint release with the PC - it's all about the cell baby - and if a third party game could be done on another platform then they wouldn't dream of paying money for it. Agent seems to be shaping up nicely by all accounts and proves that Sony will support devs working on a game provided it simply cannot be done on other platforms.

There you go Grasshopper - Agent. You like a bit of Agent don't you... Let's "here" about how "agnt will shou the TRUE power of teh CELL and bLU RAy..." Razz

There would be no point making SC exclusive - apart from starved PS3 fans waving their greasy copy in 360 owners' faces. This is stupid, Ubi Man.

As far as I'm aware, SC is out pretty soon and The Agent is quite some way off. Add to the fact that they're also completely different games and I'd summise that they're not remotely in any kind of competition.

never said the engine was tired. get that out your head. and i never thought the DLC would stay exclusive. it was a matter of time, always said that. came quicker than i expected though.

its a shame the DLC is seperate from the main game... a result of 360 limitations.

e.g. cant you play the new soundtracks from the DLC in the main game as well?! you would have been if it was blu-ray.

you need to jump in and out of different games basically. would have been much better blended into one seemless experience.

Regarding the walking penis who said conviction is half the size of Double Agent... are you a f**king moron are do you just find it a lovely little hobby to make up complete bulls**t? Double Agent itself was tiny so by your math it'd take three hours to do this game. Conviction looks worth playing as for DA, it was a major disappointment.

With the greatest respect affordable to you SVD - the original soundtrack was indeed available in conjunction with the new tracks and extra ads etc if you bought the DLC expansions rather than the extra disc. The disc based version has two extra stations because they couldn't license all the existing tracks for what is in effect a new game.

It's a rights issue, not a space one, in short.

DLC = not a new product so you can keep original licensed music and seamlessly blend new tracks from TLOD and TBOGT.

New disc = need to license all existing tracks plus the new ones. The Vice FM station is essentially just a load of cheap 80s tunes that are fun and Vice City like but not as good a mix as the originals + added content on the other stations.
Moribundman on 2 Mar '10
the disc only has brand new tunes on it?

so the DLC is missing a radio station? but still has new tunes?!

surely they could have pressed a new disc with everything on it. GTA 4 and the 2 eps if it were BR.

why wouldnt they do that on 360? must be space. the base game was maxing out space as it was.

will need to investigate whether to buy the disc or the DLC.

K to start I am pro-sony, (flamesuit on), I have played the original SC on XBOX, it was a great game, but I havent played any of the others so I cant say whether the series got better or worse. This particular game looks like it has potential to be great, or be a repetitive disaster. The graphics in this trailer look very substandard compared to most of the recent games. I could care less if SC came to PS3, If it were to just be a sh*tty port of the 360 version I would definitely pass in a heartbeat. IMO I would not go out and buy this game, even if I owned a 360.

As for anyone that says Agent will be better ur just making stupid blind assumptions. Yes R* is a reputable company that have had tons of great games. But there hasn't been a second of video or a single screenshot of the game. So you just dont really kno, you can assume, but in reality you have no clue. I myself have very high hopes for Agent and hope it's the blockbuster they claim it to be. If it has the graphics of Red Dead Redemtion then its already beaten SC in that department.

And lastly I thought MGS Sons Of Liberty was amazing. Everything after that was just garbage.

Yup, that's definitely something I can agree with. I absolutely loved Chaos Theory - I felt the series just got better from 1-3.

I really need to get back in to Double Agent though. I bought it about a year ago for next-to-nothing, but got distracted by other games. I must admit, it didn't grab me as much as the others.

The series started on Xbox so it seems only right that the game is exclusive on Xbox.

I prefer rivalry anyhow as it produces gold for us gamers. With MGS4, Uncharted 1 & 2 and now Yakzua 3 on PS3, Xbox 360 has Gears 1& 2 and now Splinter Cell and Alan Wake. The battle of the best TPS game on the next-gen platforms continues in glorious rival fashion.

I'm already getting another Xbox 360 this year (mainly for Reach) but its looking like MS is stepping up again after a s**t few years which saw only Forza last year and Gears 2 and Fable 2 the year before.
