The lack of a new, standalone episode in the GTA series leaves the action genre "wide open" for True Crime to rule 2010, Activision said today.
The firm will release a new True Crime game set in Hong Kong in Q4 this year - continuing the open-world, GTA-style of its predecessors.
In a clear reference to the lack of GTA iteration being planned for 2010, Activision publishing boss Mike Griffith told investors today:
"We'll be releasing a game in the $4 billion action genre, based on our True Crime franchise. The game belends intense Hollywood-stlye driving with intense martial arts combat and shoot-outs to deliver an Asian cinemja-inspired action thriller.
"This is a big open world action game that looks to be especially strong - and should benefit as this year's competitive window in the genre is wide open."
But can it compete after the huge shadow cast by GTA IV? And what of Red Dead Redemption? Will Rockstar's Wild West take on the open world genre dominate all-comers? Tell us your thoughts below...
i tink RD:R will do well, cause its is Rock* and its GTA western and if its promoted correctly it will sell a couple million me thinks. But i think MAFIA 2 will take the sales off no GTA5 not True Crime, dey were overrated and buggy messes, no hopes for the next one wer as MAFIA 2 looks tidy
hmmmmmmmmm there obviously forgetting MAFIA 2, just cause 2, red dead redemption and in some extent max payne 3. why is it that every time activision make a statement they sound like they think their king of the world? maybe thats why everyone hates them?
anyway i really enjoyed true crime on the streets of LA so im really looking forward to this, lets hope activision does not manage to f**k this one up like they do with all their releases. this and singularity are actually looking quite good.
i played the first true crime on the ps2 and thought it was average at best. on that basis i gave the sequel a wide berth. to be presented with the prospect of a third game barely registers any interest in me.
red dead redemption and just cause 2 look far more appealing , some of the insane moves in just cause 2 look like a lot of fun, unbelievable but fun none the less.
as a ps3 owner i am still excited about finally getting to play gta4 spin offs the lost and the damned and the ballad of gay tony this year!

Yeah, those are the two sandbox titles that I'm looking forward to this year. Add in Mafia 2 (which had dropped off my radar a little) and it won't leave an awful lot of space for True Crime.
I guess it all depends on reviews. For all we know, True Crime could be the best of the lot.

The fact that they make crap games and make stupid comments/act like king are the reasons I'm not a fan.
I remember when the first two True Crime games and how bad they were
I'm not sure when its out (if this year at all) but APB also looks like it could be a contender ... True Crime always was a GTA rip off with something missing ...
Just Cause 2 also looks amazing ... if only it had online multiplayer!
tru crime couldnt sell if it was covered in gold,. and sold for 40 quid.....it stinks.....red dead redemption will be goo dgameplay, i want to ride a horse.....doing that will bring back memories of ocarina of time..only better....there are guns, and lasoos.... get in.
As far as I can remember True Crime games suck. I also love how this guy says "it is wide open" with Red Dead Redemption coming out.
Everyone knows R* bring out a GTA games then bring out a new title then back to GTA again. In other words Red Dead Redemption is it's "new title".
It will take a lot for me to even look at True Crime again where as R* just need to take a s**t and I will look into it. Not just because of GTA but because almost every game they bring out is great. All I can say is good luck to True Crime.
The game belends intense Hollywood-stlye driving with intense martial arts combat and shoot-outs to deliver an Asian cinemja-inspired action thriller.
belends? I'd say that was a typo but i reckon its the voice inside the writers head trying to call the PR guy a bell-end for thinking that TC will sell given the crapness of the first 2

When I saw that section, all I was thinking was 'Why is the shooting part not "intense"?'
So just plain old shooting to go with the intense driving and the intense martial arts...
Good one alexkidd. While releasing a game under the shadow of GTA will always bring skeptism, I'll hold off my criticism till I see footage of the game. But going by the previous related releases, some judgement can be drawn, and well... I simply don't care. Activision firstly have to win over all those disappointed consumers who bought the previous series by surpassing GTA. Secondly, Activision have the budget to create a GTA, but can they? If Rockstar is good at one thing, it's being creative. I have doubts Activision even have an engine to compete with Rockstar's RAGE, which has been 10 years in development.
