More 2D Mario Bros. coming?

Satoru Iwata thinks so...
New Super Mario Bros. Wii won't be the last 2D Mario platformer. Not if Satoru Iwata has anything to do with it.

In the latest Iwata Asks Interview Nintendo's president discusses New Super Mario Bros. Wii with Shigeru Miyamoto's co-workers Toshihiko Nakago and Takashi Tezuka.

When the subject turned to the future of Mario, Iwata said "I feel that 2D Mario titles will definitely be made along these lines. I don't think there's any other way. Even when the three of you are really old!"

So will Miyamoto, Nakago and Tezuka still be making Mario games when they're pensioners? Tezuka isn't so sure. "I think that once we get a bit older, we won't have the stamina to allow ourselves to be sucked into games like we used to," said EAD's general manager of the software development department.

What will happen to Nintendo when Miyamoto ever retires?

Nintendo was built on 2D platformers so it's not shocking that they'll go and revisit it. Nor does it take a genius to realise that sales mean sequels.

As long as 2D keeps coming I will be happy.

I am hoping for a full 2D revival in gaming.

Of course they're still going to make 2D platformers. The only way they could make more cash than they are right now is if they started printing counterfeit notes.

Rather than making boring broken 3D games. Yep I am devastated that they are making truly superb 2D games. What I really want is another generic FPS.... Rolling Eyes

Anyone that loves gaming knows that some games just work much better in 2D and 2D does not mean a lack of innovation or forward thinking. After all we still use the wheel to move most of our transport, I don't here you complaining that BMW are making cars that are 10 years old again and again when in reality the last big change in car design was back when the Mini was launched!

Nothing wrong with 2d. Just because games are developed mainy in 3d now doesn't mean we abandon our old ways. The more diversity the better.
