Aliens vs Predator demo hits 14k downloads on Live

Rebellion "really sorry" to PS3 owners for bug - as playable preview soars on Xbox 360
Rebellion's multiplayer Aliens vs Predator demo was downloaded 14,000 times on Xbox Live over the weekend - but the developer has told PS3 fans it is "really sorry" for a bug that left them unable to use the game's matchmaking system.

Rebellion released released an Aliens vs Predator demo patch patch on Friday to fix the matchmaking error on the PC version of the game - and told CVG today that it is working "as fast as possible" with Sony to patch the PS3 version.

However, the demo has really shone on Xbox Live, where it is carrying an impressive user rating.

Senior Producer Dave Brickley told CVG today:

"Just looking at how the demo's been rated on Xbox Live tells its own story - 14,000 downloads in a few days and an approval rating of 4.5/5, we're absolutely delighted with the response.

"Someone described it as being an Avatar day - people's perceptions were turned upside down but having had time to get to grips with the combat system and the three species the comments are almost humbling, they see what we've done is deliver something genuinely new and fresh, a real reason to stop playing what they are currently, and we just can't have asked for more than that - and they've only seen one mode.

"The way we went about it I think raised eyebrows - lack of the tutorial which you get with the single player meant it's initially a daunting prospect but we released a video which explains all the intricacies and that's helped people evangelise the system and in fact even help others learn it as they've returned to give it another go.

"The most gratifying aspect is seeing people totally get into the species themselves and just get lost in the experience, even working together as teams even though it's not a team mode that's on offer."

Discussing the PS3 problem, Brickley added:

"The one unforeseen issue was the matchmaking on PS3, that really came out of left field and we've still got Sony engineers helping us look into what is at fault. I understand why people question how it wasn't spotted sooner but we just can't replicate that kind of scale in normal testing.

"Had we left Create and Browse Games in there as with the full game the problem wouldn't have been so serious. Bottom line is we're really sorry to all those PS3 owners and are working as fast as possible to find a solution which will help them enjoy the demo too."

I do hope they patch the ps3 demo soon... making the demo multiplayer was a mistake, making it deathmatch mode (as opposed to species deathmatch) was an even bigger mistake IMO.

I managed to get one game out of the demo after a 35 minute wait but I wasn't overly impressed... however, it's impossible to form an opinion based on just one 10 minute deathmatch.

Looking forward to the patch so I (and many others) can evaluate it fully.

Wtf? 4hours to download and I can't get a game? Evil or Very Mad

Who has that dude been talking too? People i have heard are saying the game is meh. I haven't even bothered to download the demo, was never interested in this game.
gazza_be on 8 Feb '10
I gave up on the PSN demo after searching for games unsuccessfully for 30 mins.

Might try the demo on 360 and if its any good i'll get it on xbox.
Ragon on 8 Feb '10
Just as well i never managed to get round to downloading the PS3 version.
Had no problems getting a game on the 360 and i've gotta say i love it. Crawling about the ceilings as an Alien rocks, so does the smart gun the marine picks up. Only been a Predator once and i got my ass handed to me, bit of getting used to the controls may be in order though as i've seen a few people destroy everyone else as the big fella.
ensabahnur on 8 Feb '10
Really sorry! REALLY SORRY! As a PS3 owner I can safely say that I will not be buying your game if you can't sort out a simple demo.

Bioshock 2 it is then.

4.5 / 5????

Am I the only one to think this was a massive let down???

Clunky controls, mediocre graphics, poor balancing, (pred is a bit too much lol). Team deathmatch that makes no sense?

Errr there's 3 aliens marines, but lets kill eachother?

The x button 1 hit killer, leaves a literal queue of people lined up to take their turn. Ohh and you cant dbl kill them when in the animation?

Best Demo I have played, due to the fact it saved me 60 quid for the uber edition.

Ahhh that explains why I sat there for 20 mins waiting to get into a game before giving up!

Ive also been having an Avatar day. Its been mildly entertaining, even though nothing even remotely interesting has happened.
nathar on 8 Feb '10
I got into a few games on PC on Thursday last week when I had the chance. It just felt dated to me. Melee combat was really weak on the marine. It was fun clambering over all the walls as an Alien but deathmatch made no sense. Why would marines want to kill each other when faced with aliens and a predator. No way to mute the voice comms lead to a lot of headaches as players played distorted music down there headset.
ronin Ithikus on 8 Feb '10
Well done! Its a damn shame only 10 of those peeps can get into a bloody GAME!!!!! Evil or Very Mad

^^^^

First accurate post I've read mate.

Mine meant to say "Death match" not TD.

It's so true, there is no reason why the races would target each other!

The only redeeming features, were: Very good SFX for all races, good scare moment with motion tracker (Marine), Cool being an alien running on walls (Though not Ł40-Ł60 cool)!
c3dpo on 8 Feb '10
Yeah... sorry... sorry I won't be buying your game, what a major let down. After two days of trying to get a game on the PS3, with no success, I deleted the demo.
This was a first day buy for me, genuinely excited about this game. Not anymore.
Two years in development Rebellion, with two weeks till release. This means the full game has not been tested large scale... what a laugh.
Who wants to buy this game for PS3 now?
pepperman on 8 Feb '10
I used to work in software and if I released software with glaringly obvious (and therefore not tested) bugs I wouldn've been sacked straight away.

Too much arty fartyness (Ooo look at my rendering engine), too much business (must get this game out to keep the board happy) and not enough good old down to earth quality control.

It's like when a new game comes out and the forums are full of bugs within hours. Don't these things get tested.

If they want us to do the QC on games they should pay us accordingly.

In fact if any companies want a bloody good software tester get in touch. I guarantee I can find holes and crash any software going.

The problem is that I think games are tested as games rather than software.

They dropped the ball with the matchmaking for the demo and having it deathmatch. But I enjoyed the game and shall still be picking it up. Not a hell of alot wrong with the controls, some folk just need to take some time and learn them, doesnt play like most fps. As for the queuing stealth kills problem, simple, dont use stealth kills when other enemies are around, doesnt take a genius, just use your weapons or melee to take them out instead. Found it pretty balanced also, alien great at fast surprise attacks from any angle, predator great for traps and sniping from high and marine is great with firepower and using the motion tracker to stay aware of enemies.

Judging from the comments, most people on this thread are in there preteen days. I remember the atari jaguar version which is ACE! then they released 1 on the PC which was superb. this is still amazing! you have no idea what you are in for. 3 full story modes, plus amazing multiplayer options. this is a going to be a really great game, no matter what your opinions are right now. the ps3 is riddled with technical disabilities which deter from a good online experience. key point being that on the 360, you can mute certain people while still talking to everyone else. great for muting teenage/preteen scrat heads.(which to be fair are hard to find in comparison to ps3 online.) set up your own private chatrooms. this is vital for any online experience, hence why you pay the price for LIVE,
Ł27 http://emailedxboxlive.co.uk/

(very trust worthy guy!)

Now I agree that the deathmatch option wasnt the greatest of ideas, a team deathmatch would have been a much better idea with people only being able to talk to their team mates.

but I have faith that these sort of options will be in the final game.

wait for the review if you're still cynical, but trust a wise old gamer, it can't not be good!
(except if your playing it on the PS3) lol put your handbags down kids!

P.S. I own all consoles, so no fanboyism from me. Yes including the atari jaguar with AVP!

Sorry to hear you ps3 boys having trouble getting a game.
I downloaded it on 360 and havnt had any problems although finding a game does take a few minutes so hopefully they will optimise match making for the full game.
I thought the game was quite good but doesnt set the world on fire, I have to say the Death match game mode doesnt do the game any favours.
I play with a few friends and we try and get on the same faction and agree not to kill anyone of your species, makes a much better game when you hunt in packs, the Death match should only be like 3players(one of each species)or a tournment style game mode, cant wait to see the other game modes when released Smile
NEOnburN9 on 8 Feb '10
Well I really loved the demo played it loads and getting the hang of the close combat system. Don’t think the pred is OP either, as marine just take your time and check your radar.
I'll never bother with death match again though, its the other game modes which I can't wait for. Anyone ever play hunt on AvP 2 best mode ever.
Here is a vid i made yesterday playing an impromptu game of TDM agreed with the other players. Really fun playing that way and shows the potential of the full game a bit better than death match.

A lot of f**king whingebags on this site! Probably all p**sed that it doesn't play like COD.

The game is amazing. I've been playing it constantly since it came out. Most people complaining are either butthurt because the matchmaking has been broken for them or just because they've not been able to get to grips with it because they've been too busy getting owned by me.

Give it a chance & it shines.

Only way to play on ps3 at the moment is to invite friends, my psn id is jjay78 feel free to add me for a game! Seriously though after a spending a few days with this I can honestly say that the demo really works if the species team up against the others. No one will play dm when the games released, infestation looks good and the 4 player co-op survivor/survival mode will be as close as we get to Colonial Marines for a while Rolling Eyes

"he said a xenomorph may be involved..."

but seriously, I managed to get a few games going on my ps and thought it was good fun, I did want to see more levels etc though.

And at least this problem was found at the demo stage so it can be rectified before release, so give them a break! Or have people forgoten the MW2 debacle already?

@paulhudd
The Alien campaign from AvP2 really sticks in my mind, Starting off as a face hugger hunting for a lone human scientist to impregnate! Actually having to eat your way out of your host.....I agree with you, this can't fail to be good. People have got too used to fps like COD, this will be a whole new learning curve. Once we get the full release with all mp modes and maps I think we will find how the 3 species really come into their own
jjay78 on 8 Feb '10
Had no problems on the 360, while the Ps3 demo can't find a single game. Knew the game was great already though, having played a different map at Eurogamer. As for the multiplayer only demo, personally I think it was a great idea as it wont spoil the suprize of Single player for me when I get my preordered Survivor Edition. As for Deathmatch not making sense, it is Deathmatch people, it isn't meant to make sense, it's just supposed to be fun, much in the same way as a Doom Deathmatch used to be in the good ol' days with Marines vs Marines(the only playable character)or Free For All on C.o.d when people run around killing each other on the same map but don't actually leave the battlefiled like in a real battle, and in real life you don't exactly respawn when you die(not that we know of anyway). See my point? As I said it not supposed to be realistic or make sense, its supposed to be fun, and it is. I for one am glad it isn't Team Deathmatch - don't fancy playing with a load of scraggy teenage unknowns, I like being on my own and taking on allcomers. If I wanted to play Team Deathmatch I would wait for the full game, it is a demo after all.

As for the demo itself, I agree about the stealth kills, it is very fustrating when you're stuck in animation and someone else comes out of nowhere to take you out(even though when you started the stealth kill there was no-one around). Also, the balancing seems off somewhat. Predators are way too tough, as are the Aliens(numberous times I've blasted three direct hits with my shotgun at point blank range into an Aliens head only to have the Alien kill me), while the Marine is incredibly wimpy and the crosshair way too transparent to be able to see where you're shooting in a firefight. The torch too is next to useless. Where are the night vision goggles form the P.C original? Sure, it dosn't highlight enemies like the other species but it bloody well helps, and you still have the motion tracker. If they can sort out/patch these issues it will be great. As it is though, niggles aside I'm still really looking forward to this, and it remains my most anticipated title of 2010 for me.

'Yeah im not buying the game cos you couldn't sort your demo out'

Jesus .. sort it out ... Anyone who makes a comment like the above just sounds like a whinning school kid, and a sad one at that (oh wait ... PS3 owners .. same thing)

Firstly the demo is MP only anyway so how does it in any way show you what the SP will be like. Secondly if you want a decent MP system bloody pay for one (XBLIVE) rather than moaning you cant get on a game.
originalbadboy on 8 Feb '10
I guess I must be in the minority as I love the demo and this is gonna be a 1st day purchase for me, initially I didn't like it but with time its grown on me, I think it takes three or four matches to really get into the swing of it, as the controls are slightly odd compared to most FPS's.
I love playing as the marine the motion sensor adds a real sense of tension and the sound of the pulse rifle is spot on just as in the films.
Not sure why everyone is moaning about the Predator being too powerful, only seen them win two or three games (and one of those was when I was the Predator) Laughing

I thought the demo was great, it's really fun and the death match is a good mode because it's fast paced crazy, also played with 7 friends in a party and we played it like a TD and it was great, finally a game that offers something a bit different to the rest of the crowd. Finally something that will tear me away from CoD. Can't wait to get this game.

I'm a PS3 owner and I don't moan about it because I realise that the PS3s online service isn't great but I don't moan about that either because it's free. I buy most of my games for xbox 360 for that reason and the PS3 is just for the exclusives.

I did however manage to get a game of deathmatch going on the PS3 and I thought it looked better than it did on my xbox but I was unable to play it properly because of lag.
Mr S0L0 D0L0 on 8 Feb '10
I thought it was quite good, I played the pc version and I thought it was a good multiplayer experience. I must admit the controls did take some getting used to but other than that it was good. For those that are complaining about it not looking at its best. Please realise that the demo's graphics is based of direct X 9 as opposed to the much updated direct X 11 that will be the max graphical setting for the game. I'm not sure what the console graphics will be like but...oh well.On a final note I would like to point out that it is deathmatch in the demo, people complain that it doesn't make sense that marines kill other marines. But they seem to miss the entire point of deathmatch; to the end, to the death, every man for himself. To be honest when has deathmatch ever made any sense, it was just an easy mode that could be implemented easily. so to conclude, my opinion is that it is a good game and most people are just nit picking. PS3 owners excluded, seeing as they have a bugged demo.

Did you actually play the demo more than once? I take it you haven't worked out you can get out of the death move? Therefore if you're good enough it doesn't matter that someones creeped up behind you, as I said if you're good enough you'll get out of it and kill the attacker, and you do realise this is deathmatch? They should of used team death match but hey thats in the final game. I was dissapointed that the PS3 demo doesn't work, Ive tried 5 times now and waited for ages to get a game but I'm still to get one. But I've played it loads on the 360, when I first tried it, it was a little hard to get used to but once you get used to the controls its a very good game, especially playing as the Alien. Day 1 purchase for me, I just hope they get the PS3 demo sorted before then so I can decide which version to get.
spooney100 on 8 Feb '10
as a ps3 owner i was annoyed to spend hours downloading the demo only to find i could not get a game, until i realised that it is a friendly match set up! after getting a few of my online friends to download the demo we found we could all play together, although it was against each other.

it was not the greatest demo but it was very atmospheric, especially as you can hear the alien screams nearby! it did a good job of recreating the tension experienced while watching the alien movies as a kid.

i expected more power as the predator, but i presume as your online career progresses you gain xp and level up to become hard as nails!

not a must buy on day one for me although it will stay on my list of games to get if i find myself bored. i am more intrigued about the single player mode rather than the multiplayer.
