Bungie - 'Halo 2, Xbox Live and You'

"We're all saddened at the realization that an era is coming to an end," says Halo dev
Bungie has released a statement saying it is saddened by the news that the original Xbox Live service will be shut down in April.

"Halo 2 fans take note - you have ten weeks left to play multiplayer games over Xbox LIVE before the service will be discontinued," said the studio."

Microsoft has said that as of April 15 it will no longer be supporting the original Xbox console or software on Xbox Live. This also applies to original games being played on an Xbox 360.

"We're all saddened at the realization that an era is coming to an end but looking back, we're incredibly fortunate to have had such a great run and such strong support from our fans," continued the upadte.

"Halo 2 has been at or near the top of the Xbox Live charts for original games since it launched over five years ago. We're extremely thankful to everyone who has played, enjoyed and supported Halo 2 over Xbox Live. We've had some great fun together, including far too many humpday losses to even recount.

"That said, mark your calendars now - on April 14th let's all rally to go online for one last hoorah. One final farewell and one final opportunity for all of you to kick our asses at Halo 2."

Halo 2 - we salute you! Especially your matchmaking system.

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message....

...buy Halo 3 its almost identical!

A sad sad day for all those who still play one of the best all time favourite games ever.....

Halo 3 tried to emulate Halo 2 but personally I think it has failed, you just don't get the same feeling when playing Halo 3, plus Halo 2's maps were far far superior, just look at what Bungie have done over the last few years in there new map packs, bought back some of these for Halo 3.

If Bungie has the time, they should redevelop all the maps from Halo 2 and pop them out as DLC for Halo 3, it will sell bucket loads of dollars, this is one of the main requests of some of the hardcore Halo fans out there..... Crying or Very sadCrying or Very sadCrying or Very sad

Bungie is cutting support to Halo 2, as in the playlists and whatnot. That doesn't mean all old XBox games suddenly can't access live... otherwise it would be Microsoft speaking for the whole.

I can see it's an easy mistake to make though

That is EXACTLY what it means jamie1. Microsoft is stopping support for the old XBOX online and indeed any XBOX 1 games that work on the 360. You are correct and Tidus3000 is wrong.

Sorry to break the bad news but you just have to read the articles

As I said, easy mistake to make... and it seems the mistake is all mine. Apologies

Next we'll be told Atari aren't supporting the 2600
GoatBoyUK on 6 Feb '10
I don't know how keeping Xbox Live players connect would add to the cost of the service, I think the discontinuance is probably because they want to force some of these old Xbox owners to upgrade to the Xbox 360 but I agree it's going to alienate a huge professional gaming community which still plays Halo 2. Isn't Halo 2 still the primary competitive game at most gaming leagues like MLG and WSCG? Not only would it affect the live gamers but could have a ripple effect across all of competitive gaming as Halo 2 players begin to drop off.
