As someone who really dislikes ff VII I've a question about VIII, is it worth a look?

Are the characters different (more interesting)?
Is the battle mechanic deeper? Hows the plot?

Worth a look if I really disliked 7 yet loved 10, or is it really similar to 7 and therefore not likely to appeal to me?

Some answers on the matter would be appreciated. Smile

I wonder if there is anyway to copy ps1 memory card saves to ps3, and somehow use them as I got onto the 2nd cd of ff8 so never really completed it...

The plot is more mature and darker than FFVII, with the characters reflecting this. The graphic style is also darker and more realistic.

The battle system was fun from what I remember of it, although my views of it are from playing it all those years ago.

The battle system is similar to FF7, but you don't use materia. Magic isn't limited by MP, instead you draw certain numbers of spells from enemies/draw points on the map. The junctioning system is a little daunting at first, but once you get the hang of it it's great - you assign spells you have to your characters' attributes to improve them (eg raise attack or defense against elemental effects etc).

Aside from that, the battling/levelling is pretty much the same. I far preferred the plot and the characters, and the world is massive and fun to explore.

Well worth a look IMO.

Dusted off and charged the PSP last night, FFVIII download currently at 90%, shortly to be a very happy chappy.

It's been ten years since I played this! It should keep me more than entertained when I take a break from hours and hours of Mass Effect 2 Smile

I wonder how long it'll be until FFIX comes out, I'd like to play that again. Also AvP demo is awesome!
djs88 on 4 Feb '10
to Athrun888 I can't answer specifically about your tastes but I loved ffvii but viii was still my fave of the 2 I liked the characters and story (plus I finished it with out cheats) It took me 1 year to get into vii for the first time then I never looked back. I would say for sure its worth a look the characters are all lovable in their own way. The story and combat/lvl up system was pretty good. I will definatly say try it and I hope for the best and didn't reccommend you a game you end up disliking.

There are memory card adaptors available which plug into the usb port and allow you to use your old ps1 and 2 memory cards on the ps3. That's probably your best bet.

FFVIII has a great story and characters (except Squall, who is an even worse brooding emo than Cloud, in fact he probably cuts himself with his gunblade), but I personally found the battle system tedious. It was too summon-heavy and annoying when you run out of magic. That said, it's still a very good game and well worth the £8 asking price.

All I want now is FFIX on PSN.
lordirongut on 4 Feb '10
Sweet, been looking forward to FFVIII for a while now! Very Happy

If you're going to put matchmaking in a game make sure it can make a match in less than 5 minutes. And don't have the nerve to call it quick play.

Yeah I've used one for all my old game saves, it works a treat. Well recommended.

Totally agree, I downloaded the AVP demo on 360 and after getting used to the Alien controls I thinks its very good, I really wanted to try it on PS3 to help me decide which version to get but I tried connecting on 4 seperate occasions but have still not played the PS3 demo. Looks like I'll be getting the 360 version then.
