Bioware trashes PS3 Mass Effect chatter

Company explains why game's source code mentions Sony console
Bioware has rubbished the possibility that hidden source code of Mass Effect 2 means a PS3 version is on the way.

As we reported yesterday in our PS3 Mass Effect story, some internet types had spotted mention of 'PS3' in the game's source code.

However, writing on the Bioware forums last night, the studio's community man Chris Priestly said:

'The Unreal Engine is cross platform, hence the PS3 code. This was brought up back in Mass Effect 1 days as well.

Mass Effect is for the PC and Xbox 360.

LOCKDOWN!'

So that's a denial that the source code means anything, then... But is it a denial that the game exists? We'll let you be the judge...

CVG giveth with one hand and taketh away with the other. Laughing

Anyway, I said my piece in the giveth thread, so I'll leave it at that.

Well, its a shame if they don't release this for PS3 as loads of people will be missing out, but as a 360 gamer it's nice to have something other than L4D and (groan) Halo that's fully console exclusive to the platform.

Sony have the right idea in exploiting the platform in a unique way and actually developing in-house for exclusives rather than throwing money at third parties and securing short term exclusives. MS could have hung onto ME as a platform seller but they shortsightedly flogged it to EA who will probably at least release ME2/3 on the PS3 at some point (being EA and all).

Actually, am I the only one to be slightly amused at Shepard working for the good ol' systems Alliance in ME1 and being unwillingly drafted by the sinister Cerberus in ME2? MSS/EA allegory anyone? Wink

Anyway. 360 exclusives. Here's hoping Alan Wake is all it purports to be.

cmon ea ,do the decent thing, make people like you, try that.
And Dorian p**s off before you start

It wouldn't surprise me if it ended up at PS3. The biggest reason being the fact that EA bought BioWare while the first was in production and we all know that EA don't like missing out on potential revenue.

The big sticking point is the fact that they'd really need to make sure that all 3 chapters were released. Perhaps they'll release a big 'Trilogy' set after the third is released on 360?

Still, everyone should get a chance to play it - possibly the best series of this Gen.

I agree with both points.

Absolutely. I seriously doubt ME1 will ever see the light of day on the PS3, but its certainly possible that ME2 might come out late on the PS3 like ME1 did on the PC (given they're marketing ME2 as a game in its own right despite the strong ties to ME1).

The inherent problem with ME specifically is the level of interlinking with the first game. It is genuinely symbiotic. Sure you can play ME2 without playing ME1, and you wouldn't necessarily notice any gaping holes, but the extent to which you get emails, quests and cameos (or larger roles) from virtually everyone you f***ing SPOKE to in ME1 really makes it difficult to simply port ME2/3. And as I've said elsewhere, I don't think ME1 would have legs or draw in punters to the series if they ported it to the PS3 today (assuming the rights would even let them). It was a great 2007 game, but it wouldn't justify the production costs to port today. Also they are supposed to be committed to creating extensive DLC for 2 years, as well as developing ME3 using the ME2 engine for the PC and 360. To start developing/converting to the PS3 would NEVER hit that timeframe, and together with their other dev teams working on Dragon Age DLC and sequels cross platform as well as the Old Republic game I really think Bioware would be stretched releasing ME2 on a new platform, supporting it with the same DLC as the other platforms and playing catch up...

I think unless you get a pack incorporating DLC at a much later date, the PS3 ME2 would have been announced by now. There are no rights to MS gagging them from at least hinting it. My guess is that Bioware are simply using that "no comment" line because at some stage they MIGHT port one or more of the trilogy to PS3 and don't want to shoot themselves in the foot by p**sing PS3 owners off and then back tracking when they take that decision.

IF they go back and rework ME1 using the current technology, then technically they could release a trilogy set or whatever (which would be great) but I think we would have heard SOMETHING if that was happening. It's not like the Fallout/GTA add ons which we all knew deep down were coming (since the main games were already on the platform those were a no brainer EVENTUALLY)...

Nonsense. ME1 tells a brilliant story and a brilliant story is timeless. The only problems it had were boring side-mission planets and badly-placed auto-saves. I played it before ME2's release and it was still great. If they released it on PS3 tomorrow I'd still recommend people pick it up.

I actually think that TOO many of the ME1 characters make an appearance, but maybe that's just because I went round with my little spreadsheet to make sure I'd completed pretty much every side mission available. You definitely don't NEED to have played through ME1 to get it, but I'll admit you miss out on a lot.

Then again, anyone who picks up a title (movie or game) with a number in it without having played or seen the previous one(s) is an idiot and has no right to complain if they don't know what's going on.
Dajmin on 3 Feb '10
This one just wont die will it?

Even if Bioware come out and say 'No way is it going to PS3, Deffo!' We'll still have more rumours popping up next week and the week after and the week after that. And so on.

Just like the old MGS4 articles and stories, im not going to get involved in them anymore. If ME comes to PS3, brilliant, more people get to play the Game if it doesnt as Mark said buy a 360 or get a decent PC.
StonecoldMC on 3 Feb '10
The word exclusive means nothing to microsoft. Everything is a timed exclusive until enough money is thrown at the developers.
Mass effect has multiplatform written all over it, its an acquired taste. The 360 has next to no exclusive franchises, everything is out on the pc, bar halo 3.
I'll eat my words when uncharted or killzone appears on pc.
pmantis on 3 Feb '10

Quite right it's timeless. My point is that releasing ME1 as a "new" game on the PS3 in 2010/11 it wouldn't sell enough to justify the development costs, and you really really need to play through before touching ME2.

My mate picked up AC2 having not played AC1, and I can see how that's eminently do-able (I summed up the plot of AC1 in about 2 minutes and he was up to speed the second he stepped into the animus) but ME2 is so intractably tied to ME1 that you are missing out on a HUUUUGE part of the game if you don't import. I'd go so far as to say if you'd played ME1 from end to end but lost your save and created someone from scratch in ME2 you'd still miss out on one hell of a lot of content and callbacks...

I know I'm clutching at straws here, but he doesn't specifically say Mass Effect 2,just Mass Effect! And there have been questions about MS's hold on the rights to that.

Anyway,I don't mind,I'm just going to forego WKC as it's getting mixed reviews and get this as I'll be able to play it with my saves from the first game on my brothers 360.

You may well be onto something here. I'm sure Cerbe... EA will (try to?) get them to release ME2 on the PS3 because EA<3$$$ Wink I really cannot see ME1 on the PS3 though, and that would detract a lot from the game.
Moribundman on 3 Feb '10
I sold my 360 in favour of PS3 before ME1 came out and now ME2 is out, I would absolutely love the series to come to PS3 and will not read any info about 1 or 2 until it does Laughing

I'm playing on PC, so likewise, i don't give a f**k about any console versions...
Zero_Cool on 3 Feb '10
Ha. All this chatter reminds me of when MGS4 came out and people were wanting/hoping for a 360 version.
Well sorry folks but console DO need exclusives and it looks like Mass Effect will be remaining console exclusive to 360.
You don't have a 360? Well play it on PC. It's too good of a game to pass on.
vulcanraven01 on 3 Feb '10
Has anyone explored the possibility that EA can't publish any Mass Effect title on anything other than a MS platform? There may be a clause in the previous contract with Bioware and MS that states the IP stays on 360/PC. When EA bought Bioware they would have to by law honour any and all previous contracts they had with MS....just saying.
