Sony: iPad will turn gamers onto PSP

When people want a deeper experience they'll buy PSP says Sony
Sony director of hardware marketing, John Koller, has said that Apple's iPad will be a benefit to Sony and its PSP business.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Koller said (via Kotaku), "Apple's entrance into the portable gaming space has been a net positive for Sony. When people want a deeper, richer console, they start playing on a PSP."

On the other hand, Nintendo boss man Satoru Iwata made no effort to hide his underwhelming opinion of Apple's new iPad.

"It was a bigger iPod Touch," he said, adding, "There were no surprises for me."

I love how ironic Iwata's statement is, pot calling the kettle black, or has he forgotten the upcoming dsi XL. Laughing

Never got into all this portable gaming stuff. To not be able to go without gaming for longer than a couple of hours is seriously sad. But I'm an old codger so what do I know? Laughing

The only way I'd be up for playing on a PSP (or any other handheld to be honest) is if Sony paid me. The i-pad looks equally as dull in my opinion. But at least you can hack the PSP - its one saving grace, I guess.
MrPirtniw on 30 Jan '10
The iPad will be able to be hacked too mate. Certain iPhone devs of the community have already said they are holding back exploits for future releases.

I'll tell you what will turn people to the psp. An updated one with a second analog stick. Not even too bothered if it didn't have a touchscreen like some people want. Give it a second stick and I'd get one. So many games that would benefit from this. Maybe a slightly bigger screen but that's not essential. The psp designers made a huge mistake omitting a second stick. I love the psp, LBP and Motorstorm are brilliantly addictive. Sadly Sony will have to come up with some kind of update or it will die though. Btw, I have an Xbox and a DSi so no Sony-bias. And I like the idea if the iPad.

I agree with the lad above. Ive had a psp for a while and gaming sucks big billiard balls on it. Just use mine for streaming play tv and video. Downloaded MGS1 and siphon filter said 2 work on psp but dont properly without second LR buttons and only fills the middle of the screen, and anything i want to watch from psp library i got to convert it first. Total bs the psp is for gaming, good for media on the go(streaming) ,but theres better speakers in the houses of parliament. Aand thats saying something.

I wouldn't say the psp is bad for gaming, there are games I've spent hours on the psp with, going back a bit, Daxter was one that ate half my life! But for 1st or 3rd person shooters it def needs a second stick. I, like you, played MGS, Siphon Filter, and the Tomb Raider series on psp and while they aren't unplayable, the enjoyment factor is seriously incapacitated by poor camera control, thus need for second stick. I am very curious to see how the upcoming MGS psp game plays. There's the impact of the iPad, it interests me but I'm talking psp...

Very Happy Damn, I bet Sony wished they'd thought of it first. LaughingLaughingLaughing
ted1138 on 31 Jan '10
Could you play MGS on PSP? Ive been trying to(ignoring screen size) but can't without the LR2 buttons. If theres something i need to do in menu to say im using my psp to play can someone let me know please
moss66 on 31 Jan '10
Or the opposite... Shortly after I got the iPhone I traded my PSP in.

Cheaper games, loads of them (fair enough a lot of them are disposable but if I wanna play something proper I'll use the 360 or PS3) and I was already carrying iPhone around everywhere so if I wanted a quick blast on summat I had it anyway.

but you don't Iwata going around showing off the DSi XL like its the next best thing ever, he and we know the DSi XL as just a bigger DSi, there is a difference. With the Ipad they're making it out as if all this is new and awesome.

The PSP and iPod touch are both great for gaming, I have both. I can't believe that Sony haven't put in the 2nd analogue stick. With that, it would dominate the portable gaming market (that and a new version made for people taller that 4 foot 6). Hell, they could probably fit the L2 and R2 buttons in. But apparently they're making consoles for smaller people now. (I've seen a lot of emphasis on 'petite gamers', but they're not thinking about anyone else.)

Syphon Filter...AHH ( nods nostalgically and smiles)
Now there's a blast from the past..
ewko117 on 31 Jan '10
HA don't make me laugh Sony. I haven't played on my psp since I got my Ipod Touch, so what makes you think that the Ipad will make people play your crappy handheld console. i would rather rip out my eyeballs, leave them on a shelf and turn on xfactor (s**te TV). yes the Ipad might not be the next big thing, that its really a iphone on steroids, but it will definately not drive people to use the PSP.
1589vaughan on 31 Jan '10
I don't think iPad will lead to people to buy PSP's, although maybe DSi's.
Sony have a problem if they made a PSP with a second stick, and its such a huge problem its the reason why they can't and wont do it.
If you did have a new model with another stick dev's would have to choose which system to develop for. becuase adding a second stick pretty much splits the PSP up into two lines. Thris partys are having a hard time making a profit from UMD sales (I don't have any figures of PSN sales) so making a game for a system which wont work on the 50 million PSP's already out there would be suicide.
only_777 on 31 Jan '10
1. iPad really IS a bigger iPod Touch. It's unwieldy and clumsy, and looks like it'll be a pig to use.
2. Sony, sort the PSP 3000's screens out -- lighter pixels around the outside, and that awful line effect are terrible. Why can't they make a good screen?
3. Nintendo, give us the DS2 already! Higher res, full BC and better rendering of older games. Show Apple how it's done.

That was the biggest reason why I was interested in the PSP. My brother had all kinds of things running on his - including stuff like N64 ISS. I loved the idea of using it for some of the older games, but I really couldn't get on with it.

It's a good bit of kit, but I just ended up getting cramps in my hands after a while.

Much like the PS control-pad, it just really wasn't designed for people with freakishly big hands.

Smile

thats right people will pay hundreds of ££££££'s to jump from one pile of crap gaming machine to another.

hay i hated my psp and sold it after 6months after playing on it max about 10 times. bought the upgrade and its still pants. id rather spend my money on average quality games on wii 360 or ps3 than even touch another psp again
A HERO EMERGES on 31 Jan '10
Er, what? Why would an iPad make me want to buy a PSP? Nothing in the world would convince me to buy one. Why do I want to play PS2 games with a cack control layout?

And I don't want an iPad for that matter either. I have a 120gb iPod and can watch movies and listen to music on it and that's enough for me

Well said, think the ipad will be a smash too, for certain games it will be a joy actually, and i think theres a huge demigraphic of people who want to surf the web, write a letter, watch a hd movie, play a few casual games.
the games look to be about ps2/wii quality--gta chinatown would be nice on it)
I write music and do hd video editing so i need a quad core computer, most people dont. I remember that the wii ,was laughed at by a lot of people when it was announced "yehh, people are really gonna wave a little white controller and jump about in front of there tv"

Taking it on holiday would be great, music and video juke box, all the books you could read , number of board games, write music on it , roadmap, info about where you are, skype video phone anywhere in the world,
I wonder in a couple of years time when the current top model is around £150-200 how much of a smash it will be.
martinawatson on 1 Feb '10
my biggest problem with the ipad is that you can only do one thing at a time. oh yeah and no flash pretty much cripples it in terms of web browsing.

I can see the market for it though. people who don't get on with computers but want something they can use to surf the web easily on. Large older market, sort of what the wii has been doing with the ds and wii.

Don't see anything of note happening gaming wise on it though the iphone is awkward enough to control at times, this i'll just exasserbate problems i think.

Personally not for me. but i don't think it was designed to be.

Yeah I know, I'm just finding the whole situation rather amusing, I'm just not taking anything seriously anymore, life's too short for that.

On a (slightly) more serious note I suspect depending on how this sells Nintendo may or may not announce a new portable this year.
Athrun888 on 1 Feb '10
I highly doubt it. Nintendo have only just started announcing DSi only titles.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 1 Feb '10
yeh no flash , not that smart
