Waste of time Sony. If the HDD is not built-in you can only put video/music and photos on it. And Ext HDD's for the PS3 need to be formated in FAT32 to work. Sony need to get NTFS drives working on the PS3.
did you even read the article. It's obviously to cater for video information from a new service that's being launched in japan. If you want a bigger HDD for game saves just shove a bigger SATA drive in. Its not exactly difficult.
WHERESMYMONKEY if you even understood what they were talking about, you'd know that Fat32 has a filesize limit, so NTFS is quite important for storing large video files (:

Theres a man who is on the button! Yes, the FAT32 file size limit is 4gig. If you are in the market for 500gig Storage then clearly you are playing around with files that are bigger than that.
NTFS is a much better storage format. but you are completely missing the point. This is for a system that will more than likely be giving content in standard def. your average SD film runs in at about 700 mb a time HD between 3.5 and 4.gb.
Unless you are going to start editing video the bitrates that suff is going to be recorded at on it is simply not necessary.
To all the people that want a external hard drive supported by the PS3 almost all of them are compatible.
@ the people that say fat32 has a limit of 4GB you are wrong! You can format in fat32 on windows with a maximum size of 32GB but you can use a file manager and format a entire 1TB if you want
Seriously though, if you are gonna spend £100 on an external 500gb drive then you are a fool. £60 gets you a nice internal £500 2.5" SATA drive which won't be limited by USB 2.0 transfer speeds.
@Mmmmgrolsch Yes, but the previous posters are talking about a different 'limit' with FAT32. You can format the drive to any size you like as you say, but the actual files you save on a FAT32 formatted drive have to be 4GB or under. It is NOT possible to save a 4GB+ file on a FAT32 formatted drive. PERIOD.
Try it yourself, or google it. Its not rocket science!

Are you even reading the posts? FILE SIZE LIMIT, not HDD limit. Try looking here: http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=fat32+file+size+limit&meta=&aq=0&oq=fat32+file
