Wii 2 "needs something new" - Iwata

HD alone isn't enough, says Iwata
Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata has repeated Reggie Fils-Aimé mantra on the firm's next console, telling investors that simply making the next console compatible with HD televisions wouldn't be enough to guarantee sales.

Last month Nintendo US boss Fils-Aimé said the successor to the Wii would have to offer more than an HD upgrade and Iwata obviously agrees.

The Nintendo boss says: "If asked if making the Wii compatible with high definition -- just making it compatible with high resolution -- will get players throughout the world to buy it, I would of course say: 'Do you think it would sell with just that? It needs something new.'"

According to Andriasang, Iwata claimed that he's never spoken about Wii HD and wonders where the information came from. Try Reggie, boss!

Iwata has also called BS on claims he spoke of the next DS having motion control and HD screens.

Are the nintendo big wigs the only people in the world that didn't see Johnny Lees Youtube videos?

That's what they need - a bit of head tracking.

Pity for them he works for MS now.

some proper controls and games. please!

keep the wii as an addition to the family. a bit like handhelds are part of the business also, but seperate.

come back to the games scene nintendo.

casuals arent interested in glitzy graphics. the wii does fine at what it does. expensive technology wont shift as much, or have a decent enough profit.

have a motion console and a proper games console.

wait and see how natal/arc do in the HD arena. not good im betting.

dont see any point in updating the wii's power. it goes against the principle.

Well I agree with him there:

Poor graphics + HD = Easier to see poor graphics

I say poor as a comparison to 360 and PS3. Galaxy and a few others look brilliant still, but the vast majority is just cheap crap thrown on the console to make a quick buck as it were.

I can't see where they go from here. People won't buy another console for better graphics when the Wii exists (same reason casual gamers from the PS2 didn't go out and buy a PS3). A new gameplay style, more immersive? Try VR without red LED lights this time? Got to be something quirky and cheap. Nintendo are masters at this, finding niches where none actually existed. Hmmm...

I know people are going to disagree with this but I personally feel the Wii's graphical power is perfectly fine.

At this point in time I can't see a mere graphical upgrade allowing new gameplay mechanics and experiences so I frankly don't see the point.
Athrun888 on 2 Feb '10
I'd agree with them, a console that's practically the same as the previous model that just has more power than it is not enough to grab my interest.

And that isn't just relevant to Nintendo...

Better third party support???

Good to see the usual uninformed crap from you SVD.

Nintendo have made 4 games that could be considered casual titles for the wii. The rest are sequels to established franchises reboots of old classics and decent games to boot. Hell even the wii series of games are incredibly fun and well made.

The problem with the wii is that its incredibly cheap and easy to develop for. thus lots of crap isthrown at the console by third parties that want a peice of the pie. If you want to blame a major dev have a go at ubisoft for release those god awful imagine games.

But you know lets forget all the proper games on the console and just focus on the shovelware shall we.

My suggesstion SVD is you go and get an education. get your hands on the wii and a copy of Twilight Princess, Mario Galaxy, Metroid prime trilogy, the revamps of Pikmin 1&2,Disaster,Punchout,Smash Bros Brawl and Warioland. then try and tell me nintendo haven't put a proper game on the machine.

He's got a point, just adding HD won't be enough. I think for all the console makers the next batch of machines is going to be tough (with software house say that they will be dead after this generation is a worry for them). Graphics are reaching a peak and all the added processing power is soon going to be limited by manpower and what developers can do with it (and costs). Things like 3D I'm not so sure about yet, its a wait and see product. I think the next consoles will be a balance and combination of power, visual & audio, and new & old contol systems. Plus some new innovations that will take tranditional games in a new direction while still catering to the old fan favorites. They will need to something to also keep game makers on their side and not be tempted to easy and lost cost solutions like direct gaming as in the Onlive service.

playing a games console isnt an education, fool.

i wouldnt want graphics that crap stretched out over a widescreen tv. and the controller is awful, even with a game using 'classic' controls.

leave the motion guff out and give us a console at least capable of rivaling the other games consoles.

i doubt motion will work as a more expensive console.

thats why they should keep the wii and release a powerful console along side it.

i'd like a nintendo console, but not something thats motion-centric or has crappy simplistic colourful graphics.

The graphic Whore speaks again..... Rolling Eyes

Super Mario Galaxy was brilliant, and why because the game design was superb and the controls were excellent. Why was this, was because of super HD graphics...no it was down to clever design and good use of the motion controls.
Osiris25 on 2 Feb '10
never said it was a crap game.

just dont want to rig a crap looking graphics console up to my tv.

they have the casuals for that.

so i dont know why they are upgrading the wii's power.

the causals dont want power. and i doubt the hardcore are after motion. despite sony and ms's cash-in attempts.

I don't remember stating that you said it was a crap game, I was point out the benfit of not getting hooked up on graphics all the time. I have a 50" Widescreen LCD TV and Mario galaxy looks fine on it, in fact a lot of the Wii games look fine on it. There are plenty of gamers that have a Wii and are quite happy with it, despite what they're told by others. A huge part of that casual market you refer to was in fact the Playstation's which is probably where some of the missing PS3 sales are. Don't knock them, they play their part in funding the market much like we do, in these tough times every little bit is a help for companies.
Osiris25 on 2 Feb '10
They're gonna wait to see which (if any) 3D becomes the standard.
