DS2: Iwata denies 'motion' statement

He never said it would have motion sensing capabilities
Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata has told investors that he has never spoken of any motion sensing capabilities for the successor to DS.

Last month Asahi newspaper in Japan reported that he had told them the next Nintendo handheld would have motion sensing capabilities and high resolution graphics.

Yet, according to Iwata, via Andriasang, it was the reporter who made the suggestion.

Iwata claims that the Asahi reporter said: "The next DS will need to have high resolution graphics and include a motion sensor, wouldn't you say?"

To which he replied: "Those are naturally considered requirements. However, do you believe it will sell with just this?"

Iwata also told the investors that he wouldn't be making any statements about the capabilities of a DS successor for fear of rivals stealing Nintendo's ideas. "If there were no rival makers in the world, I'd could give examples of the things that we are considering. However, for competitive reasons, I cannot give specifics today on the what or when of the things we're considering."

Makes sense - Nintendo's always been super tight-lipped about its hardware until the very last minute.

There aren't any rivals in the handheld market, are there?

Oh no I didn't!

Sure there is! There's the iPhone!

If there were no competitors in the handheld market, you can bet Nintendo still wouldn't be showing us new stuff. They'd still be selling the Gameboy Advance, claiming that SNES graphics are all that can be achieved in a handheld.
