Alan Wake will 'blur line between games and TV'

Microsoft says Remedy has been 'polishing' game for months
Psychological adventure Alan Wake will be the closest thing that gaming has ever come to a top-notch TV thriller.

That's according to Microsoft, who this week told CVG that the Xbox 360 and PC title would "blur the lines" between TV and gaming - and reiterated that the much-delayed game was on track for a spring release.

"Alan Wake is on track from a development standpoint and will play an important role in our Spring 2010 game portfolio," said product marketing manager Laura Disney, commenting that developer Remedy had "really polished the game over the last few months".

She added: "The time Remedy has spent on Alan Wake is indicative of the final result players can expect to see. The storyline will run as a driving factor throughout the game, creating an atmosphere that captivates the player in a way that many straight-out horror games do not.

"Alan Wake will blur the lines between video gaming and television, and play on the strengths of both to create something truly compelling. "

Check back on CVG later this week for our full Alan Wake interview, or click here to check out our special page dedicated to the release.

You were only saying yesterday that Heavy Rain might persuade you to join the dark side. Hypocrits unite! I agree though - just hope 'Alan Wait' does make an appearance in the Spring. You never know, it might be released before gran turismo. This really better be worth the wait.

It sounds more like you would like to suck Alan Wakes sack.

You weirdo.

alan wake can kiss my left low hanger HEAVY RAIN all the way, xbox has no motion controll's, dualshock has sixaxis motion. start weeping..

heavy rain has 4 characters, with 4 or more endings...alan wake has one maybe 2 if your lucks.

and i think ul find, INFAMOUS too this genre FIRST deciding on whether to be good or bad and your decisions influencing gameplay, not just 4 routes to get to the finish/end, 4 routes with 4 endings.

so alan wake, think you got a new genre...think again..... shove your flashlight where it wont shine anymore.... you never had anything,!
purple101 on 27 Jan '10
Here goes the counter hype. Next thing, that it'll blow Heavy Rain away, but you'll have to wait another year or so.
I remember first screens coming alongside launch of 360.

Yes, heavy rain looks good. It does however seem to be one long cutscence that you hit the odd button to interact with..like dragons Lair on the Amiga. Very Boring. Soap...I said that heavy rain looks good, but i would never go to the dark side. Hang on, why are you still called Soap? You took COD: MW2 back to game on Monday (dont blame you, its WANK)
TykerD3 on 27 Jan '10
how the hell are you guys comparing this to heavy rain?

Hope the PC version is right behind the 360 one but I'm not sure, this article makes it seem like it is but I'm sure they said they had no idea when it was coming out.
Sleepaphobic on 27 Jan '10
Well you heard it here first folks. Heavy Rai_ oops, sorry, ...Alan Wakes will blur the lines between games and TV.

I know you have market you exclusives microsoft but please be a bit more original and dont just copy/paste sony's lines.

Also, although i was a bit cynical about the game at first its turning out to look really good. Im not as impressed with the graphics as some others but the atmosphere reminds me of the original Silent Hill and it will be nice to see a good quality game in this genre as they have been a bit light recently.

However saying that it blurs tv and games seems unfounded and unlikely. Its just not that type of game.

Lost meets Stephen King meets Twin Peaks!

And people have a problem with this Game how Confused ?

Yes I did take MW2 back on Monday - I proudly got £30 trade in for it. WaW Zombies...I'm back. Only called Soap on here GT is: The M1GHTY QU1M.
By the way Tyker (why are you still called Tyker, Knifey??) by mentioning old Amiga games you really are showing your age (30+). Some of the kids on here will not know what you are talking about, you might as well mention Emilyn Hughes's International Soccer on the Commodore 64.

LOL. I've seriously been considering turning bi-console myself... Playing UC 1&2 at a mates house, and looking at Blu-Ray, Agent, Heavy Rain, 3D gaming and GOW3 all make me think very seriously about the merits of (also) owning a PS3.

I did check out the list of console exclusives to get excited about this year on Metacritic, and to be honest those are really the only things that excited me there. The 'box still has a shed load of exciting exclusives AND Natal this year, AW included. There are a lot more Japanese origin exclusives for the Playstation.

What can I say? I think I just prefer western games to overtly Japanese ones (still not sure why Mass Effect 2 is being lauded as one of the best WESTERN RPGs when all the Eastern ones I've ever played have failed to impress me).

But yes. Alan Wake. Exciting. Wouldn't let him Teabag me though...
Moribundman on 27 Jan '10
I’m certainly intrigued, though what’s been seen so far is so limited I’m unable to garner even a little excitement for that (all that’s reserved for Mass Effect at the moment anyway), so I’ll just wait.

As for blurring the line between TV and Games…well, seeing as most game story lines are drivel compared to well written TV (I do realise there is also a lot of drivel on TV mind) that is unlikely to happen for some time. Though I do already play my games on a TV so in some ways that line has never existed. There is a reason every movie made based on a game has been complete and utter s**t.

As for Heavy Rain, I watched the first 7 minutes of it on YouTube, and, though I’m aware that this probably is no where near enough time to judge it on, it didn’t half look dull. Get up, wander round in pants, look at photo, brush teeth, have shower etc. That sounds like most my mornings, I’d rather not play a game that simulates such daily mundane tasks, I’d rather do something fun.

Are you serious? What about Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Wing Commander, Tomb Raider, Alone in the Dark, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Dead or Alive (Holly Valance mmm), and Far Cry to name but a few. EmbarassedLaughing

I loved Emlyn Hughue's International Soccer, although I had it on the Spectrum. Wierldly, a few years later I bought it on the Atari ST (perhaps just to rekindle lost love) and despite the better graphics it didn't seem to play as well - let that be a lesson!

Of course Matchday and Matchday 2 were king of mid-80s football though.

Oh and speaking of Dragon Lair (i didn't have the really early version circa 1985), what was the name of that other similar game - Space Ace?

Looked great, but what a load of s**t
nee50n on 27 Jan '10
If the story turns out great, then this will be awesome. The graphics and atmosphere look great already, so it's just down to the plot.

I'm waiting for the superior PC version...
Zero_Cool on 27 Jan '10
dualshock has sixaxis motion. start weeping..

And what a waste of time it was implementing sixaxis motion. Honestly how many games have used it, then added in an option to switch it off (cough, Lair). It's been this gen's biggest disappointment.

Blurred lines?. That won't do in this, the hi-def age!.

I just bought an expensive new HDTV. I don't want my lines blurred thankyouverymuch.

Didn't the last 'Alone In The Dark' game claim the same? And that was a tad over rated, too. Hope this is different.
HotRabbit on 27 Jan '10
Sounds good, but why the mention of the PC version? It's development was halted last year and no further word has been forthcoming from MS nor Remedy as to whether it will ever see the light of day or not. Have you been told something that we haven't on that account, CVG?
The_KFD_Case on 27 Jan '10
From what i've seen of it, no, not at all. However, I do believe heavy rain will do.
Atinetro on 27 Jan '10
From what I've read and seen....this game is going to be an absolute corker!

Well from what I've seen of Alan wait it's nothing interesting really, oh I shine my tourch onto shadow zombies to kill them...sounds like they ripped of that idea from that game "Obscure" which was crap.

Heavy Rain is a completely different game as well so I don't know why your comparing the two together...idiot! Rolling Eyes

Didn't the last 'Alone In The Dark' game claim the same? And that was a tad over rated, too. Hope this is different.

The developers took on board some of the criticisms levelled at the Xbox360 version though by re-working the PS3 version which ended up a few percent more.

I played it on the Xbox360 and it didn't immediately endear itself to me with effing and blinding from the off with no explanation as to who I was or what was going on (not so bad for Bioshock- not so great in this game). The game seemed curiously stilted in a way by its own ambition to make many objects interactive (i.e. flammable which many things in the game boil down to) in such enclosed areas. The game is a pyromaniacs dream. Being able to choose episodes proved to something of saving grace because your patience with individual episodes will wear thin by similarity , relative dullness and, above, extremely tedious control. The overall feel of the Xbox version in a way is a poor man's Half Life 2. But it has some moments of flawed fun- racing through the streets of New York as an earthquake shatters the road, due to the games' emphasis on realistically (but not beautifully) rendered action (which elsewhere is to the detriment of ease of fun of play) you can end up trapped on scenery but it is relatively fun. The PS3 version might be relatively OK but I couldn't wholeheartedly recommend it - it's like a C movie trying to be an A Movie. Not a worthy entry compared to Alone in the dark: the new nightmare.

Beats screen tear though right? Wink

Seriously though, when they start saying games are going to be like TV and film, it really makes me become disinterested. If I want to watch TV or film, I'll do that. If I want to play a game, I'll play a game. Cut scenes are all well and nice but trying be something you are not is well, not. I still don't think games are real enough to make me actually care for characters etc in a way films convey feelings

Speak for yourself. I cry myself to sleep at night over every little lemming I've let plummet to their death over the years.

I dunno. Mass Effect 2 looks better than both when it comes to film quality presentation.
The voice acting in Heavy Rain and Alan Wake seems clunky by comparison.

You wash your mouth out! The original Champ Man and Sensi world of soccer were king!

Mind you actually, that might have been late 80's?
