BioShock 2 review is in

PC Gamer and PSM3 rate 2K's massive sequel
The first BioShock 2 reviews have arrived, via both PSM3 and PC Gamer magazines... and it's good news.

PSM3 awarded the follow-up 93%, saying it "tops the original in terms of storytelling and combat."

PC Gamer meanwhile went with a lower but still impressive score of 90%, concluding that "the mechanics that made the original BioShock such fun return, better than before," and "it's still better written than pretty much anything else out there."

If you're hankering for some BioShock 2 love before the February 9 date, we prescribe our latest BioShock 2 preview and this exclusive BioShock 2 video. It's all good.

Buy your copy of PC Gamer and PSM3 online now and have it delivered to your door.

I had doubts about this but now I will have to look into it with this PSM3 score.

Sounds good. When is it released?
Mark240473 on 14 Jan '10
heh...sounds promising...i wonder if the xbox scores will be better.

fingers crossed the multiplayer isn't naff

I think it's out the 6th of Feb. With Dante's Inferno and Heavy Rain to follow in the same month (assuming the reviews are good), I'm kinda glad Splinter Cell got delayed a bit. Smile
Black Mantis on 14 Jan '10
hell yeah! but really was there ever any doubt this was gonna rock.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 14 Jan '10
Excellent! I did worry about the game as it was not oversaw by Ken Levine. Looks like I need not have worried after all. *thumbs up*
kimoak on 14 Jan '10
Yeah, Levine is outspoken, but he sure did a great job with the first one. I really hope these reviews are on the mark, I'd love for this game to live up to the writing and atmosphere of Bioshock.

Good stuff, just wanna know what the best version is to get, 360 or PS3?
dpb135 on 14 Jan '10
The first was one of the best fps's I've played. For me, the main reason it was so good was that you were this ordinary guy thrown into an extraordinarily situation and then had to try and cope as best you could. That's why, I have to say I was a bit sceptical when I heard that you played as a big lumbering big daddy for number 2, I thought it would lose a certain something if you played as something so powerful knocking splicers around like they were rag dolls. Going by those scores, it looks like I was wrong. Very Happy

shame on all you k**bs who doubted it was going to be as good as the first one and needed to see a review before feeling at ease. i've been a believer that it would be just as good if not better from the beginning, what with the guy who did the best level in the first one (fort frolic) heading the team making the sequel and all.
Sinthetic on 14 Jan '10
"Tops the original in terms of storytelling...."

really pms3, really?
adgr19 on 14 Jan '10
"It's still better written than pretty much anything else out there"?

That implies that the first game was well written, when actually it was an overblown load of nonsense with completely non-immersive storytelling mechanics Razz
yerbluesjohn on 14 Jan '10
Does anyone know the PC required system specs? Also does this game support DX11? I wanna test drive my new HD5790 Smile

I don't know if you're just flame baiting or not, but for me, i will get the 360 version, simply because the controller is far better for an FPS.

Cool, this is out on my birthday...looks like I might actually get it now if the reviews are to be believed.

That sounds an awful lot like blind faith to me. Which is pretty much the behavior of fools.

That you believed it was going to be 'just as good if not better' purely based on the involvement of one guy who did one level in the first game makes you more of a k**b though.

Given Take 2's penchant for shipping their PC games with nasty DRM and limited activations (with or without a reclaiming tool), I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that history repeats itself once more. I have absolutely no reason to think "Bioshock 2" for the PC will be any different, and I will not reward Take 2 by buying either "Bioshock 1 or 2" for the Xbox 360. -1 sale on both counts.

Honestly man, lighten up and do yourself a favour, this looks like it's going to be a great game and if you're a true game fan you should enjoy this.

Correct, and his name is Jordan “Null” Thomas. Wink

Big game given 90%+ in exclusive review only to turn out to be not half as good as promised shock predicted.

yup that is a fact just confirmed by you. I will better it though by saying I will get it on PC because a mouse makes controllers feels stupid regardless of which console it is for. I was really subtle wasnt I?

to all the guys saying why there were doubts; I was afraid because I wondered how exploration would work out as rapture was brand new in the 1st game and totally felt alien. Now we're just back in the same place albeit different areas and that could effect the whole feeling could it not? Playing as a prototype big daddy also sounds like crap and I will be skeptic on any remark abt the storytelling being better until I played it myself as the narrative in the 1st was just stellar.

I should imagine it's pretty much the same as the first Bioshock. The engine is the same. They may have made some little tweaks here and there but I would have thought it the first one ran well on your PC, the second should be a doddle.

Here's a link to the first one for reference...

I actually meant 5970. It is sat at home in a box waiting to replace my 4870 X2.

I guess I'll have to test is out with Dirt 2 instead. That's DX11 ain't it?
FinalBillybong on 14 Jan '10
I guessed that the reviews would be around 94% so not far off so far. The fact that it seems to feature more use of moving water appeals to me most.

as much as i loved the 1st i really didnt think much of the story or the way they presented it, i loved the setting and the gameplay tho. but will still be getting this tho

Ever heard of "integrity"? Perhaps you are willing to sell yours as cheaply as the price of a game as opposed to something far more precious. I however am not.

Get back to me and see if you still feel the same way after having had two separate DVD drives' firmware destroyed by DRM from the legally purchased copies of games with DRM which was supposed to stop piracy yet didn't. The final insult in the matter: I had to use a pirate's crack to make one of those games work which had DRM meant to stop just that but which damaged my PC hardware instead. No money for p.o.s like these guys. Not from me. Not ever until they start worrying less about pirates and start worrying more about their customers.

I was wondering whether you hadn't mistyped the GPU model. Smile Congrats on being a proud new owner of the fastest single GPU setup on the open public market at present time!

"Dirt 2" for the PC is indeed DX11 by all accounts. Please do let me/us know what your personal impression is regarding DX11 vs. DX9 and DX10/DX10.1. Cheers.

How does drm do anything to firmware? Maybe you had a couple of cheap drives? Im no computer expert but mayb it was screwing around with ur os which directs communication of ur software with hardware or there was some kind of conflict. If it did indeed mess ur optical drive up then srry abt tht but i doubt it.

Fistly, GG ingy hah, made me laugh!

Secondly, standing up for yourself and what you believe in? Give it a rest. Making yourself the victim and pretending to stand up to big businesses is pretty dull and a bit pathetic. Play the damn game and have a good time.

Maybe when you're shooting splicers in the face you can pretend it's a guy in a suit working for 'The Man'.

Good for you, KFD. Too few of us bother to protest anymore, so it is nice to read of people who still do so when they feel something is not right.

May I make a suggestion, though? I understand that you are a PC purist, and that the idea of playing an FPS on a console makes you do a bit of sick in your own mouth, but why not purchase the first Bio 2nd hand for the 360? You get to play a great game, and they will not profit from your purchase but it is all still 100% legal?
monty_79 on 19 Jan '10
I wonder how accurate both of these reviews are. Isn't Playstation Magazine a little generous with it's scoring of Playstation 3 games?

I know PC Gamer is a a little generous with their scores whenever they are given an advance chance to review a game before anyone else. It seems like that's the price you pay to do an advance review.

The other thing that's odd is that there are only two reviews so far and one says the story is sadly lacking when compared with the first Bioshock, but the other review says the story in Bioshock 2 is better!
