The arrival of the much-talked-about stereoscopic 3D technology this year will be the next big thing in games, says SCEE London creative director Nicolas Doucet.
"3D TVs are definitely a big one," Doucet told the Official PlayStation Magazine, discussing future innovations in gaming.

He goes on to say the new 3D TV sets, the first of which are set to arrive this summer, will "bring us a step closer to total immersion".
But Doucet, who works on EyeToy and PS Eye games, most recently on EyePet, says that despite the newfangled tech, it's a changing attitude to development that he regards as the most significant step forward.
"Personally, I think the biggest innovation in games in recent years has been an intellectual one: developers being brave enough to believe that going back to simple concepts could be the way forward. As a result of such thinking, a new market has been created and I hope this trend continues so we're forced to think about fun in its purest form."
Check out this opinion piece on the much anticipated arrival of 3D tech this year.
Going back to simple concepts and looking at what has been done in the past and using them now is proving to be successful. I and many others for example have played Super Mario Brothers over the years and have really enjoyed the Wii iteration. Us veteran gamers may think it's a step back, but there are a lot of new gamers out there that missed those days.
As for 3D TV. It sounds like it could be cool for short periods. I have no idea what the effects on a person that watches 3DTV for overly long periods of time. I could imagine myself feeling quite sick.
Could be though, there are a fair few 3D sets already in homes now. Any HDTV with a refresh speed of 120mhz or higher can already do 3D. News HDTVs coming out now can offer up to 400mhz refresh speed. So in theroy at least anyone with a fairly new HDTV and a PS3 can already use 3D Blu-Ray films when they come out. Also MS have already said that the 360 will be able to do 3D (although I'm not sure how it'll work on models without HDMI ports). Personally I think it is still too close to the SDTV to HDTV change over to be really big, also people like Sony need to educate people so they can tell if their equpment is ready for 3D or not. But I wouldn't count 3D out just yet, becuase upsets can happen.
3DTV and ARC/Natal could be awesome. I've not seen anything in 3d yet but i'm thinking for example a tennis game where the ball flies out the screen for you to hit it back, squash would be even better as a two player experience. Then again it may just be two gimmicks smacked togather to make a steaming pile of turd.
Ok Sony, throw me the motherf**kin' 3D screen for free and it'll be big thing. 1080p supposed to be your big thing before. So here i am, having 1080p screen for 2 years now. And what? I want my money back, i ain't paying no more for concepts.
this whole 3d thing is getting so annoying, it seems to be 50/50 as to whether joe public think it's a good thing. i for one don't like being told i'm going to like it by these big corporations, it makes me want 3d less. they should have subtly added it to tvs and not make this big thing.

Chances are if you have a Sony 1080p screen its already 3D! I would advise reading up on 3D, as all that is needed is a 120mhz HDTV. Pretty much all Sony HDTV's are.
when its main stream telly your watching...I really dont want Gail Platt from Coronation Street's Ancient face Lurching out at me while munching me tea!
Then again naked darts could make a good comeback on Channel 5!
As far as I can work out it's a huge impression of extra value for very little effort from the developers so it's no wonder that they'd like us all to believe that we must have it.
It's gonna be the same as motion controls. I've yet to come across a 360/PS3 owner who's crying out for standing up and waving their arms around to play their games, yet we're gonna get these motion controls shoved in our faces.
Selling to an audience that doesn't exist, but they'll convince us we're part of it.
trust me, i am all against this right now only due to the cost is will bring. i have no money to buy an 800+ quid tv when i bought a 42 inch philips 2 years ago.
nearer the time i will probably be aching to see it and try it, but i am sceptical and think the adoption rate will be slim as f**k.

It's Bravia V4000, i don't think it's 3D compatible.

No, yours is only of the two in the range that only do 60mhz. Refresh rates on Bravia TV's can be found here: http://tv.about.com/od/productreviews/qt/BRAVIArefreshrate.htm

120hz is in US only. PAL is actually 100hz. I know this because my tv has 100hz motion flow. You can also get 200hz motion flow, which equates to 240hz in the US.
Therefore, I wonder if they'll just double up a 50hz refresh rate for UK tv's, meaning that we only need a 100hz tv to watch 3D images?
I hope it falls flat on it's bottom like, betamax minidisc, hddvd etc.. I only bought a new TV 2 years ago. which is only 60hz
So because you can't have one, nobody can? lol

3DTV with Natal is pretty much out. Natal is already heavy on the processor because of the brilliant idea to scrap the nathal processor. Reports say it uses 30% of the main 360 processor so doing that AND rendering twice the screen? No way in hell, unless we are talking really simple shovelware games.

It won't take off if you have to wear those massive goggles they expect you to have. Especially if you need 6 pairs to let you and some friends watch a film - have you seen the price?!
Also, a film is one thing but how many hours would you be prepared to play a game for in 3D? Not very many, I'll bet. Certainly not as many as you do now.
And @Dewin - where the hell did you read that Natal is going to use 30% of the 360's processing power?!
Besides which, Natal doesn't affect the GPU usage, and it's the GPU which would take the weight of producing 2 images.
I was interested in this until I found out you still have to wear those stupid glasses, which not only make everything look opague, but I already have to wear glasses to watch Tv so how am I supposed to wear two pairs at the same time? Sit closer? Thats what gave me problems in the first place! Until they invent a proper 3dTv (that you don't need to wear glasses to watch it) or holographic technology gets better I think I'll give it a miss and stick to regular Hdtv. Besides, from what I've seen so far most of it will be used as a fancy gimmick and rarely, if at all to enhance the experience in any significant way. It's a good idea in theory with lots of potential if used properly and I'm sure one day they will get it right, but I just don't think the technology is there yet.
All I care about is the price. I would never pay over £300 for a TV. A TV is just a TV at the end of the day.
I'm exactly the same. A big TV would dominate my lounge and I hate going into someone's front room and seeing nothing but a huge TV setup. I found it impressive when I was 20 and my dad bought a nice setup, but now I just don't get it. If games or films are your life I suppose.
My sister and her bloke went out on boxing day to buy a 42" HDTV. They don't have sky plus, won't have BR etc. Yet were prepared to spend between £500 and £1k, even though they're not flush and it will be a big, blurry disappointment in SD.
Electronics companies definitely came up trumps when they managed to find a way of making lots of people stump up a grand for a telly. Never used to happen en mass like this!
I don't get the 3d gaming thing anyway. It's not like you're going to be able to get up and look around the side of something on screen, in a VR kind of way.

Oh your being awkward now! You know what story he means. He has put 30% when he ment 15%. http://www.techradar.com/news/gaming/microsoft-natal-consumes-15-per-cent-of-xbox-cpu-power-661952

I'm sorry but I have to disagree. I love a nice big Tv, it makes playing games so much more enjoyable and Hi-def films look great. With games in particular sometimes they can actually be easier to play - spotting enemies in the distance on a fps and distinquishing them from dark areas/scenery(while getting shot at)at present on my 20" hdtv is a nightmare, and in general I just want that home cinema experinece as I watch a lot of films. I'm very much looking forward to buying a 50" plasma and home surround kit shortly. It will enhance the experience so much more and be the main centerpiece of the new room(which is what I'm looking for)and its my hobby, so I'm happy to spend the money on it.
