Nintendo Wii sales hit 67 million

Wii Sports Resort, New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Wii Fit Plus clear 10 million sold
Nintendo's released its latest financial results, which means we get to obsess over the stupid amount of games and consoles its managed to flog so far.

According to Nintendo, 67 million Wii consoles have been sold to date worldwide and over 125 million Nintendo DS consoles.

And if that wasn't enough to achieve Satoru Iwata's dream of doing a Scrooge McDuck dive into a giant pool of cash, Nintendo's also announced that it's flogged over 509 million Wii games and 688 million DS carts.

Incredibly, Wii Sports Resort has sold 13.5 million copies, New Super Mario Bros. Wii 10.55 million and Wii Fit Plus 10.16 million; truly impressive numbers considering some of those games have only been on sale for a few months.

Breaking it down by region, the numbers look like this:

Japan
Wii - 9.7 million
DS - 29.9 million

America
Wii - 32 million
DS - 44.9 million

Other
Wii - 25.7 million
DS - 50.2 million

Perhaps Nintendo's next console will literally print money?

I didnt think it would have the momentum but fair play to Nintendo, who would have thought that they would be in the lead this Gen, almost doubling the sales of the PS3 and 360 Shocked .

I cant see anyone catching the Wii now, as it marches relentlessly towards 100 million units sold, to think I feared they might do a SEGA. Goes to show what I know about Gaming Laughing .

I wouldn't be too hard on yourself, StoneCold - I doubt too many people could have predicted the way things have panned out.

Nintendo took a huge risk with the Wii and it's good that it's paid off for them - I dread to think what it'd be like to have a generation of consoles that doesn't involve Nintendo.

Mario or Zelda just wouldn't be right on an Xbox or Playstation.

Nah, Nintendo would never go the way of Sega. I actually did some reading on Sega a while back and it doesn't actually amaze me how inept a company they really are and hence, got kicked out of the hardware race

Hats off to Nintendo though. Though they've always been strong financially, they have done really well to turns things around

I don't think they took any more of a risk than any other company releasing a new product. Nintendo were very clever and identified the market they wanted to after and designed a product that would appeal to to that market. Products like Wii Fit and Sports etc all helped with the appeal.

The man reason for Nintendo's success is probably down to the fact that they know how to run their business really, really well.

When I first heard about the WiiMote I went absolutely nuts. Telling all my friends that Nintendo are on to a winner this gen... BUT, I still didn't reckon on this kind of dominance though. They really have exceeded my expectations.

Oh and New Super Mario Brothers Wii. I am on world 5 at the moment now while playing with my mum and her bloke. They are not gamers at all and to get as far as we are at the moment shows how they have gotten this game so spot on. There are all sorts of little tricks and tips to getting to the end of a level with novice gamers in tow. The game is much deeper that what you see on the outside. We will have the game finished by the end of the week, I reckon Smile

It's been pretty much known for a while, but this officially confirms it. The Wii is the best selling Nintendo home console of all time.
milky_joe on 28 Jan '10
Right! Now release a game worth buying for it! I have about 6 games for mine and thats it! And no they don't know how to run a business well! They just put it to everyone who wasn't a gamer and told them how bloody simple it was to play their bloody simple games! Wii Tennis anyone?
liquidgfx on 28 Jan '10
They make more money than anyone else and also have their rivals wanting to do what they do. And they don't make a loss either on the hardware. So how is that not being able to run a good business? A company will ultimately want to make money and Nintendo make it in heaps
JuiKuen on 28 Jan '10
That's a staggering figure. I don't like the Wii but man alive that's one figure and a half.
