Iwata: iPad just "a bigger iPod Touch"

Nintendo boss man unimpressed by Apple's new tech
Nintendo boss man Satoru Iwata made no effort to hide his underwhelming opinion of Apple's new iPad.

"It was a bigger iPod Touch," he said, following the revealing of the new gadget earlier this week and the internet-conquering hype that surrounded it.

"There were no surprises for me," he said later in the interview (AP via NY Times).

Iwata went on to express little faith in stereoscopic 3D, which is all the rage this year. "I have doubts whether people will be wearing glasses to play games at home. How is that going to look to other people?" Probably just as daft as waving a Wii Remote around?

We don't care what we look like to other people in the house - 3D is going to be awesome. God help our bank accounts.

To be honest, I was thinking exactly the same thing regarding the ipad. What exactly is the point of it?

I'd love to try out 3D gaming though.

Have to agree with theman about the iPad... a dissapointment considering the hpye and hoopla surrounding it. Perhaps I'll feel differently once some iPad specific games are released.

As for 3D, that's something I'm really looking forward to! if they can get the depth of field to look right, playing an FPS is going to be amazing!

Yeah, I'm a little confused too. I'd read a little more on it last night and saw that it does have rather a lot of limitations.

I'm sure it'll sell like hotcakes, but I can't quite see a reason to get excited about it just yet.

it'd be a nice thing to have around on like a coffee table or something.

What irony in what Iwata said! Shocked

"It was a bigger iPod Touch," when talking about the launch of the new iPad.

Many outside Nintendo have said something similar:

"It was a bigger GameCube," when talking about the launch of the new Wii.

Iwata is right - it is a bigger iPod Touch, but Nintendo have demonstrated how adding new pizzaz can take tried and tested technology a long way.

The iPad doesn't appeal to me at all. If I did care about eBooks though - and I don't, I'd rather get a Netbook and use Kindle for PC free. Idea

It should've had the proper Mac operating system on it. You can't even multi-task.

Just look at how upset Hitler is about it. His rant is actually spot on.

"I have doubts whether people will be wearing glasses to play games at home. How is that going to look to other people?"

- did he not maybe mean what the screen would look like to other people in the room? Sort of the problem of isolating gamers.
chip toon on 29 Jan '10
But it IS just a big iTouch!

But yes, he is the last person who should be judgemental about how people look playing games.

3D gaming can kiss my bottom, I'm not paying for a new TV for a long time. I havent my HDTV all that long.
Bryanee1983 on 29 Jan '10
I was impressed by Avatar 3D, but I did have mild headache afterwards. If this happens all the time after a couple of hours viewing 3D, I'll give it a miss.
Black Mantis on 29 Jan '10
I am not calling it the iPad, from now on it's called the iSlab.
only_777 on 29 Jan '10
I'm sorry but 3d is a false dawn. You can't have fast moving images in 3d, it just turns into a mess. Even during Avatar, which was specifically shot for 3d,got blurry when too much was going on. A 3d FPS is just going to make people sick.
ledickolas on 29 Jan '10
he's not wrong, thats all it is, and its not exactly as amazing as everyone seems to think it is.
Obscure_Metaphor on 29 Jan '10
And the Wii is a slim gamecube with worse controls.

That's the impression I got. It would be strange if he was questioning how people would look wearing 3D glasses when he wears normal glasses himself...
milky_joe on 29 Jan '10
I still think they should have called it THE FLATPUTER.
Triffic on 29 Jan '10
do you think the inevitable iPad nano will just be an ipod touch with a different logo and a higher price tag?
Obscure_Metaphor on 29 Jan '10
What's wrong with a large ipod touch? Confused

I AGREE WITH IWATA 100%. About the 3D and the ipad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wiikii007 on 29 Jan '10
He might be quick to dismiss it, but people were quick to dismiss the Wii.
Desaima on 29 Jan '10
While I agree with him on this one, I must admit there have been a lot of stories about this guy being unimpressed with other companies' products. Particularly ones which could poke into the new casual gaming market that the Wii dominates. PS3 motion control, Natal, iPad - all shockingly frowned upon by Mr Nintendo.
I'd listen to him more if he didn't sound like a broken record...

Brilliant! I also remember the one where he was banned Xbox Live
JuiKuen on 30 Jan '10
I agree with this man. 3D glasses are moronic, and the iPad's too big. You're better off getting a high-end netbook for the same price. They're better off perfecting the iPhone and making VR games.
