Guitar Hero devs 'came close to killing each other'

Bosses from Vicarious Visions, Rebellion and more discuss founding a business with their brother
The siblings that own Guitar Hero developer Vicarious Visions 'came close to killing each other' - before their parents stepped in to intervene.

Karthik and Guha Bala set up the New York, US developer in the early 1990s and have won wide acclaim for their work on the Activision music series. They have also worked on Band Hero, Transformers and Tony Hawk games.

"We have come close to killing each other," Guha Bala told The Telegraph. "We have even had to have some parental involvement to sort things out."

Sounds like the Gallaghers have got nothing on these two.

He added: "The advantage of brothers is that the gloves can really come off. You can be very honest with each other if you think something isn't right."

According to the paper's report 'now they run a studio of more than 200 people, the brothers have to keep things professional rather than personal.'

Other studios set up by brothers include Sports Interactive, Jagex, Crytek and Rare - whilst Ubisoft was established by the Guillemot siblings.

Karthik Bala said: ""Doing it with your brother is different to having a high school band that splits up when you all go your separate ways after graduation.

"We thought it would make us rich and famous, but neither of those things happened. We didn't receive the royalties we were promised and were left with a lot of debt. It was a difficult time but was a revelation - it was not just about building a game but building a business."

Do you reckon you could set up a business with your brother/sister, readers?

Given the trainwreck that was the latest Tony Hawk game, perhaps they should've gone through with it. Or at least turned their weapons against their evil master; the devil incarnate, Mr. Bobby Kotick.
