The PS3 has finally been hacked. That's according one hacker who claims to have figured it all out.
It took hackers weeks to get into the PSP when it launched, opening up the platform to a world of fun homebrew apps (and dirty piracy), but the PS3's been out for over three years with no hacks found... until now if the hacker's claims prove to be true.
"I have read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor. In other words, I have hacked the PS3," he says.
He says the PS3 is "very simple hardware cleverly applied, and some not so simple software," also claiming it took him a total of five weeks' work to get through Sony's security.
Can you hack yours today then? No. "As far as the exploit goes, I'm not revealing it yet," adds the hacker on his blog (via Gizmodo), who doesn't want Sony respond to his hack. "The theory isn't really patchable, but they can make implementations much harder," he adds.
Should we believe him? Apparently we should, because it's the same guy who first cracked (or jailbroke, if you like) the original iPhone, so he has stripes.
Cool, not sure what use it would be though, I suppose you could use it to maybe make it compatible with PS2 games again, or make somekind of HDD loader for PS3 games like the wii.
Then again i don't see the benefits of this. the wii ones are obvious faster loading and not having to rely on the cheap dvd drive.
Then again there are an increasing number of PS3s with knackered blu ray drives out there.
Good good another box I can install Linux on!!!!!!!!!
Wait, couldn't you already install Linux on a PS3?
Why would you want to, though? Never quite understood why people do it, other than the "challenge". What would you use it for that you couldn't do with a cheap PC or laptop?
Yes, you can instal linux already on the PS3. I've had it on my Japanese 60gig for ages now and use that PS3 for emulators. I got Snes9x and its funny playing super Mario world with a dual shock 3!

I've wondered this myself, the system already in place works everything fine. What benefits would installing Linux have?
EDIT:Ahh i see Only_777 has already answered my question.

Yep. The answer is so you can emulate old old games on a brand new PS3
i did it for the same reason. There's something awesome about being able to all the old point and clicks on every available device. Gotta love SCUMMVM.
Theoretically speaking you could use it to run a wii emu as well. but i don't know how much sucess you'd have.
"God CVG he is far from a hero!! Sounds to me like he needs to get a job. Afterall piracy keeps prices high for all of us." -Benstevens
its funny you say that, considering its taken over 3 years to hack, and still hasn't been in any usable form that we know, then why aren't the games really cheap now then?? Piracy is the excuse all games companies use just to charge high prices, a bit like how the uk government recently found the buzzwords 'global' and 'warming' to hike taxes and introduce new ones. Piracy, has probably been round longer than CVG, hands up who 'Tape to Taped' there speccy/c64 games!! I remember the floppy disc back up attachment for the Japanese nes, which was followed by the floppy disc backup system for the snes and the megadrive, all the cracking crews on amiga and st, How about the simple modchip for ps1? Even the Ps2, via modchip or HDloader and harddrive My point is piracy hasn't killed any of the above, it actually helped in some cases, in fact as soon as the ps1 was hacked the saturn bombed. The only major casulty i can think of is the dreamcast, but it was so simple to play copies it was bound to happen. Then people say piracy is a big problem for psp, but how can it be? using a flashcart on gameboy/advance/ds is far easier.
all in all it could be a good thing for ps3, think apps, think hd homebrew, as long as an iso loader doesn't appear there is nothing to fear, apart from sony banning your console
you may think after all that im up for piracy, but not necessarily, i have a wii, a ps3, and a 360 all of which are untouched by modchips, i shop around, wait, then buy games i want at discounted prices, and sell them when im done. Having said that my psp is on cfw but i use it for homebrew and emus, i hardly ever go on it long enough for anything else.

Couldn't have put it better myself.
If piracy disappeared completely tomorrow, we would not see a reduction in the cost of either the software or hardware. It just wouldn't happen. Look at how much we're still getting ripped off for audio CDs after all these years.
I'm not neccesarily condoning piracy, but it sure ain't the reason for the rip off prices we pay for stuff.
Yeah guys I hacked the PS3 too but I'm not telling you because it's a secret. But seriously I did, I just tappped into the flux capacitor and the plasma reelays but I'm still not telling you.
