The images show off the game's grittier atmosphere, new weapons and squad of slightly-shorter-than-the-Chief Spartans. Read everything we know about the game so far in this Halo Reach details rundown.
The prequel uses an entirely new game engine and is due in the shops later this year. More details can be found in the latest issue of Edge magazine, which goes on sale this week.
it kind of looks a bit spbottom though as there seems to be no foliage and everything looks flat. could just be an early build or perhaps its 1080p so they have to reduce detail - seems like a most console games these days either go lower res and more detail or higher res and less detail.
i still expect it to be a good game though, hopefully it will offer a slightly different experience to halo 1, 2 and 3.
Saying that, they also look less attractive and, dare I say it, a tad generic?
It does a little, the grittier feel they are going for perhaps makes that an unwanted byproduct. Personally I like the fact that halo is colourful, it gave the game character and helped distinguish it in a sea of shooters.
Though that said i think most of the colourful bits were on the Halo's itself from what I remember, so this being on an actual planet would make the colour pallete a little more reserved.
Anyway, I'll wait until I see the beta, as long as i can stick plasma grenades on peoples faces and then watch them run around helplessly before exploding I'll be happy.

I think most sane people will have the same view. And let's be honest, we have hardly seen anything of Halo REACH to base a decent opinion on, either way.
For some reason though, I was expecting visuals along the lines of Ghost Recon. Those visuals started the HD era for me. I remember being gobsmacked when I first played it on the 360.
I think the screens look pretty cool, a little gritty, but im pretty certain the final graphics will look somewhere towards this, http://www.bungie.net/projects/reach/images.aspx?c=59 ,just imagine 'this' with the screens shown here.
I'm very impressed with these images. "Reach" looks a lot better than "Halo 3" IMO and "Halo 3" looked good for a console game. I also like the fact that the blue armored Spartan is female; sure, it's just a small touch but for me it helps deepen the immersion level. Hopefully the actual game play will be up to par as well....Now if only they would release a fully functional PC version of it so I'm not forced to use a gamepad for a FPS game.
Despite my previous disinterest I've started to warm to this game (though we're quite a ways out yet), and I may end up buying this after all.
I reserve my grand judgement at this point in time!
I always thought the Halo series looked a bit like it was coloured in with crayons but now with this preschool vibrancy taken away it just seems a bit grey - like Gears!
I’m sure they’ll sort it out though, even if the review scores have been slowly dropping with each release – wasn’t ODST an 80%...?
Ive never liked it when screenshots are released for an fps.....and you dont see the images from behind the gun like you would in the game.....but anyway these are still looking very nice indeed

scores from metacritic go 97, 95, 94 and 83 for halo 1 through to odst. i'd expect reach to be back in the 90's though as odst was never in the same ballpark as a full halo release. this game doesnt have to be the best game ever, just good fun will do for me.

Agreed!
Although tbh I preferred the first game to Halo 2. Multiplayer was excellent on the 2nd game but I really hated the characterisation of the aliens.
IMO The Covenant were at their best when they were mysterious invaders...
Just my tuppence though but I would like to see Halo become a little more "serious" again if that makes any sense!

I'm quite happy with the Covenant being the way they are, although seeing them as a brutal invasion force is exciting.
The Forerunners fulfill my desire for mystery in Halo.
So it looks like there's going to be a female Spartan - Mistress Chief, if you will - in Halo: Reach. Can't wait to see her getting tea-bagged in multiplayer, again and again and again... (sigh)

Lest we not forget, this game is still at least 9 months from release. If what I have read is true, the game itself is pretty much finished, and the remaining time before release will be spent polishing that bad boy until it shines.
As such, I wouldn't worry too much about place holder textures or rough edges at this stage. Has to be said, it looks a hell of a lot better than Halo 3, even with so much production time left (saying that, it should, shouldn't it?).
GOTY? Not for me, I think that honour will go to a new IP, or at least a franchise that brings something new to the table. You know you will be getting quality with this though, and that's all any reasonable Halo fan wants tbh.

Well think I'll wait until some better quality images come out. Those looked very grainy and not very pretty at all. If its at beta stage now I'm sure we'll start seeing more screen shots soon.
