PS3 sales hit 3 million in UK

Sony celebrates with party in London
Sony has confirmed that it's sold 3 million PlayStation 3 consoles in UK.

News of the milestone comes as Sony blasts invites to press for a London party to celebrate the achievement with free booze and loud music.

PS3 picked up momentum with the release of the Slim last year, and had a stunning Christmas not over in the US, recording its best ever figures of any single month in December 2009 with a 90 percent hike in hardware sales over the previous year.

PSN's did pretty PSN did pretty well too, it's revenue having jumped 155% from December 2008 in North America.

We'll be firing off our RSVPs for the 'Black and White' dress party then. Wonder if we can get in wearing black and yellow Air Force 1s...

Does paragraph 3 and 4 make any sense at all?

PSN's did pretty PSN did pretty

I'm pretty sure the first 3 words are not meant to be there.

Either way, good to heart Sony catching up in the UK sector. Maybe they will start to treat us equally to US ...

18 months ago the ps3 was being widely written off, its been a good comeback which only bodes well for the industry. Think we need 3 big names all pushing the boundaries and eachother, long may it continue.

These are just marketing promo exercises unless they give us actual sales figures for the UK.

Fair play, it has made a supremely good comeback, still don't think it has done sony any harm to be humbled a bit after the ps1/2 giving them pretty much everything their own way, they were forced to actually put some more effort in.

The ps3 is the only thing that is in the way of me having all 3 this gen machines an i think that will be remedied very very soon, with the likes of gow3 et al on the way.

its a good time to be a gamer Very Happy

I find this milestone interesting. Not because I like Sony, but because it means its console is gaining momentum. This in turn will lead to more creative games appearing on the current consoles.
Desaima on 22 Jan '10
Good for Sony. But could they stop patting themselves on the back and sort out the yellow light of death with the money they are spending on f$%king champagne. You pay the company 430 quid at launch and get f**k all respect back. Never ever buy a launch console. Wait untill they know how to manufacture the bloody things correctly. Yes thats aimed at both this gen manufacturers.

Self-congratulatory jerks.

You know, when Mother Teresa won the Nobel Peace pirze, she used the earnings to help the needy.

Think like Mother Teresa Sony. It is the righteous pathway to success.

3 million?

THREE MILLION!? That may not sound like muc to some, but, there's only 60 odd million people in the UK.

That's basically 1/20 people that own a PS3. That's an insane amount! It's not a cheap console to have and is almost considered a thing you'd buy if you're into your tech and gadgets, rather than just as a games console.

Consider the fact maybe 25 percent(probably more) of the country just cannot afford such things as a PS3 and you begin to realise what a huge figure that is. Even at 250 quid, it's still not quite an impulse buy. Although this is cracking news, It's great to see the PS3 doing well these days, especially within the UK. Anyone got figures for the 360 in the UK? I'd imagine the two would be very close by now.

I have 2 60gig PS3's. But then again one of mine is a Japanese launch model (the other PS3 is a launch UK model).
only_777 on 23 Jan '10
I too have 3 PS3's

A working 60gb PS3 still at 2.76FW, its not gonna be updated or anything, its boxed up for the future..... Its a new unit from sony back in may 2008 after my orginial died due to the blu-ray drive, it only has 20 hours use as I brought a 40gb.

My 40gb PS3 I sold to my workmate and as part of the deal he gave me his broken 60gb as long as he could keep his HDD so I have a 60gb unit but with a 40gb HDD in it. Its only the blu-ray drive then when its fixed my sister will use it.

And I have 120gb PS3 slim from launch. Its quiet, gets used a bit on Socom.
Darth_Raiden on 23 Jan '10
thats not much, 3 years and 2.9 million sales..thats less than a million a year, the Xbox 360 has sold 4.5 million in England over 4 years. which I guess is marginally better.
whatever happens, the PS3 is still 1.5 million away from Microsoft's user base, and Nintendo's total UK sales are at 6.7 million. so 3 million for Sony doesn't really sound like a big deal to me.
Apollian24 on 23 Jan '10
and not to mention that ps3 games never beat there 360 counterparts in the uk charts lol
dorian2011 on 23 Jan '10
well i have had a xbox 360 for over 2 years now, love it, best games machine i have ever know.
I also have a wii, and its a fun social games machine.
recently bought a ps3 slim, and initially bought it for Buzz and uncharted. However i have gottg en into the ratchet series of games, and also like the vidzone and the new video store.
The more i use the ps3, the more i like it, its actually got a lot of depth hidden away in all of those settings.

I had to buy a copy of MW2 on the ps3 as some of my mates were begging me to get it on ps3. Its good but i dont think the controller is as good as the xbox one, also the headset system seems easier on xbox, and strangly so do the graphics of this game which surprised me. More the sharpness of the picture than the graphics really.

Anyway i say nows a great time to be a gamer.
dazza074 on 23 Jan '10
Good to see high sales. Considering the price of the machine, also meaning its user base is probably at a hgher age than Xbox 360 users, it shows the maturity of the console and that it isnt the complete failure Xbox 360 (and PC) fans want it to be.

Roll on White Knight Chron, The Last Guardian, Agency, The Agent, Yakuza 3, Gran Turismo 5, Call Of Duty 6, God Of War 3, 3D Dot, Crysis 2, Heavey Rain and Alien Vs Predator etc etc and fingers crossed Resistance 3, Killzone 3, Uncharted 3 and a new Jak and Dexter!! Very Happy
starsail on 24 Jan '10
ps3 had a good year, with uncharted 2 been the best game on any format, and the 201o ps3 lineup is in my opinion the strongest of any platform, mag gow3 ,heavy rain and final fantasy 13 which is also coming to 360 but ps3 will be ultimate version due to bluray and the fact that the game was specifically written for ps3,for once scenarion reversed because up till now the majority of multiformat games specifically written for 360 and rushported to ps3,they didnt harness ps3 extra omph due to more cost and difficulty of programing ps3
SKUNKKEY on 24 Jan '10
To be fair, MS saw the damage FF would have done (given PS3s alreay massive line up this year) to Xbox 360 had they not have secured the rights to share exclusivity, however PS3 is getting Final Fantasy Verses and the New Final Fantasy Online (which should improve on the previous entry given the developments in online capabilities).

Any FFJRPG nut should really own a PS3, or they could stick with Blue Dragon on the competition lol
starsail on 24 Jan '10
im not wating to start an arguement starsail but final fantasy online wont be exclusive as they said they were in talks with microsoft to sort out the subcription costs or some crap like that this is the same problem with champions online oh and kudos with the blue dragon remark cant wair for the sequel its a shame ps3 owners dont get to expiernece that game its brilliant lol like dragon ball z combined with avatar and final fantasy lmao
