Doctor Who computer game in the offing

BBC talking to publishers about licensing more content

A Doctor Who video game could soon be on the cards, as the BBC pushes ahead with a licensing programme for publishers.

And we're not talking another Top Trumps-type effort here; we're talking triple-A, major production.

According to MCV magazine this morning, the Beeb is ready to help create games based on its biggest licences - after a long period of abstinence.

"We've been reactive to the market in the last few years," said Dave Anderson, head of multimedia development at BBC Worldwide.

"There were a few opportunistic licensing deals, but we were largely aggregating and holding onto our properties to wait and see how the market developed."

What BBC programmes would you like to see ported to your 360/PS3/PC/Wii readers?

Oh good.

i heard something a while ago that they were in talks with telltale games to make a series of adventure games.

Don't know how much truth there was in it but that'd be the way i'd like the games to go.

This is promising news for that Cash In The Attic title i've been hoping for...

I imagine a Dr. Who game could be a lot like a Bioware RPG. Might work, but I'd be sceptical.

I can't think of any BBC TV shows that would work as a game or not end up just ripping off something else. Survivors would be like (what I imagine) I Am Alive. Robin Hood would be some God of War-like outing.

Torchwood might work as a sort of futuristic detective romp, right enough. But if you were playing Jack then not being able to die might make it a bit of a cheat :)

Do what the batman arkham asylum team done, turn the doc into a 3d game like that.

I can see you looking over the doc's shoulders and running through some funky 3d worlds.
With so many varied enemies, you could make a series of dr who games(like they're doing with the recent batman game).

In fact, give it to rocksteady games to do, if they're not too busy with batman 2 that is.
They could really turn doctor who into a decent game.

Hopefully it won't include that penarse Matt Smith. He was in the year above me at school and was a bit of a cock.

I certainly wouldn't buy it if his catchphrase was "Geronimo" Douche.

My Grandad tells me the first re-usable condoms (errrgh) were called geronimos.

So now I'm probably going to assosiate this new doctor with a reusable condom.

Oh no you don't!!!

Rocksteady should be locked into their studio and chained to their desks. They should only be allowed to see the sun and get some fresh air when they've completed at least 10 sequels!

:)

I definitely think Bioware would do a better job of this than Rocksteady. Especially if you can customise the Doctor to wear his 3D glasses. :D

This is officially my new quote of the day. Seriously, I couldn't stop laughing because I can imagine it being soooo true!

There's no mention of the 360 or PS3 in that article so don't get too excited - obviously the mainstream is where it's at and quick turnarounds as opposed to expensive two to three year development cycles (by which time the bubble may have burst on show X).
The DS stylus could double nicely as a sonic screwdriver.

Yes!

I was once thinking about how you could make it kinda episodic and have 6 of them. Lister could do all the fighting and shooting, Cat the platform jumping athletics and stealth, Kryten could have some mad techno-crafting and puzzle solving.

I don't really know about Rimmer, I suppose it depend if he's hard light or not.

This could be brilliant if done right.

Rimmer could use his hard light to lift heavy objects and soft light to walk through walls or obstacles to get to switches or something to remove said obstacles to let the others through.

Another idea for Rimmers hard light could be used like a shield as he is nearly invincible, he could be forced by the others to face down a boss creature or something as a distraction to let the others get to something they need to kill it.

You could also turn off his projection unit and have one of the others throw it to somewhere inaccessible to reach switches or something.

If you get what I mean, lot of somethings in there.

Online play could let four players co-op to complete specially made levels.

Absolum Daak would be a good Gears of War style game.
