Mario Galaxy wins game of the decade award

ONM readers pick their best game of the noughties
Super Mario Galaxy is the game of the decade according to ONM readers.

Readers on the ONM forum voted for their top 50 games of the noughties and the plumber's Wii adventure beat the likes of Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Legend Of Zelda: Wind Waker to take the top spot.

ONM writers also voted Super Mario Galaxy as their game of the decade at the back end of last year.

I like Mario Galaxy. But I certainly don't think that it's game of the decade.
bazzatuk on 18 Jan '10
My favorite Ninty game of the last decade was Metroid Prime 1.
lordirongut on 18 Jan '10
Oh God. Way to bring the fanbabies out of hiding.

NINTENDO GAME, THAT IS.

They're still wrong. Męlée's better.
Balladeer on 18 Jan '10
I could agree with Galaxy- but rather oddly i actually really liked both battalion wars which don't rank highly at all.
quintus on 18 Jan '10
I never realised the past decade was so mediocre...
Wozzakl on 18 Jan '10
That's a really tough call...

On the basis that the ONM 'GOTD' had to be on a Nintendo system then i would say it's got to be between:

Zelda:WW (GC)
Metroid Prime (GC)
Resident Evil 4 (GC)
Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
Okami (Wii)
Metroid Prime 3/Trilogy (Wii)
Resident Evil 4:WE (Wii)

The last 2 are on the list because even though the originals were already genre defining games, they were somehow improved upon with Wii controls to become the 'definitive' versions (Which should get more credit; the GC originals as without them the Wii versions wouldn't exist, or the Wii versions for making an existing game/experience even better?)

A Really tough call, but personally it's a tie between Okami & Resident Evil 4:WE. I really couldn't make choice
iamthelloyd on 18 Jan '10
Personally I would pick 64 over Galaxy as it was the first in 3d. I have much more fonder memories of playing that for the first time. That probably goes without saying though. I don't think we'll agree 100% though anyway Smile
kimoak on 18 Jan '10
If Mario 64 was released this decade it'd definitely win. Resident Evil 4 would have been the correct choice for decades best Nintendo game, that was all out action.
The Bossman on 18 Jan '10
Kimoak.... Game of the Decade would imply within the years 2000-2009.

SM64 was 1996/97, although you could argue for the re-releases on DS or Virtual Console i guess.

I guess the point intended with 'GOTD' is that the source game/material (to be considerded for this decade) would have had to have been created within 2000-2009.

Okami then... Or RE4:WE, lol
iamthelloyd on 18 Jan '10

It wasn't, but comments like that are... Rolling Eyes

I think Galaxy Could well be the one, but its very close with some of the others mentioned already. I think its worth bearing in mind that this is for Nintendo systems not in general, before all the rants come in from all angles. Hence why it was for official Nintendo magazine.
Osiris25 on 18 Jan '10
Well its the one and only choice, Galaxy is the best game ever made.

Only Galaxy 2 can top it.

Galaxy 2 game of the year again.
stedman on 18 Jan '10
Eugh! how did this piece of medicore tosh get anything?

Does no one notice that every single mario game is the same damn thing over and over and over again?

Princess gets kidnapped
Plumber goes to search
plumber collects stars and coins
Plumber loses a brother along the way
Plumber rides something along the way (usually not the princess he's damn lost because she's too busy getting kidnapped again)
Plumber fights giant mutant turtle dinosaur thing
the end.

It's enough to make anyone who likes decent games sick!

Flame me if you want I don't give a toss.
Marlonjb on 18 Jan '10
^^^ hasn't played it.

best nintendo game since ocarina.

done.

Gameplay is too amazing to worry about such things.....Only nintendoand Shiggy can do such things!

Bow down to Nintendo!
stedman on 18 Jan '10
i've gotta say, it is my game of the decade for sure.
Sinthetic on 18 Jan '10
Everybody knows Mario games are not about plot. I actually think its stupid to put a plot above gameplay and mechanics anyway (like most games these days do).

I'd say for me its a close call between this, Metroid Prime and Resident Evil 4 as games of the decade.
In terms of all formats, I'd add Bioshock and even Batman: Arkham Asylum to games that I've found very pleasing. There may be others but I can't remember them right now
JuiKuen on 18 Jan '10
Super mario 64...DS
SICARIUS1 on 18 Jan '10
i have loved all Mario games....apart from Galaxy, absolutely hated it,it felt more of just a gimmick for the wiimote, with the different planets

Seriously, what was the point in that ?

All I can say is, if you truly think that of the Mario games then you're missing out on some of the best gaming moments of the last 30 years or so. Why don't you put aside your limited view and do what a real gamer would do, sit down and play the games ? Then, if you still don't like them, come back on here and tell us why. You never know, you might actually provoke an intellectual debate Neutral
MisterBedo on 18 Jan '10
Sure its the best nintendo game of the decade...if you're 10.
Eternal Darkness..done and done.
jazzy_p on 18 Jan '10
Seriously? I didn't like it at all. I enjoyed Mario Sunshine more.
spacelion on 18 Jan '10
metroid prime for me,it was the first game of last gen that blew me away, and still go back to even now
oldgit66 on 19 Jan '10
A dubious choice IMHO!

Don't get me wrong, Galaxy is a brilliant game. However, I just think that so many games offer an infinitely greater amount of replayability...

I would actually much rather be stuck on a desert island with Halo3 than I would with Mario Galaxy and that says a lot! Wink
PS3_fannyboy on 19 Jan '10

Well I am 33 an it is My game of the decade, closely followed by RE4+ (just because the controls made better than it already was on the gamecube) and then possibly ICO which was amazing and New Super Mario Bros Wii (which just managed to squeeze into the last decade).

It seem the mature gamer loves mario and the immature gamers love to make out that it is immature. It is almost as if they want to be seen as more mature by criticising the bright colours. Perhaps if it was made into an FPS, introduced blood and sexual references then ditched any hint of great gameplay they would love it!

Seconded. The truly mature don't need to prove that they're mature by playing gory games. Personally, I'd classify any game showing unnecessary breast as rather immature.
Balladeer on 19 Jan '10
I have to agree with the above posts, I'm 30 This year and have no problem playing games like Mario etc. If fact because I don't feel that I must play only games with big guns and mature content I'm able to enjoy a very wide range of games that these people will over look. In fact I'm currently enjoying a re-run of Super Mario RPG which in its self was aimed at a younger JPRG market but hell if its not good fun and great to play.
Osiris25 on 19 Jan '10

not what i meant. I meant that people who are 10 would have only played this and not hopefully experienced games which are too old for them. So thanks for calling me immature...and I dont like FPS's so..jolly good show old chap. It might be because i didn't enjoy the game and think its one of the most overrated game since COD4?

you are entitled to your opinion, but i strongly disagree. It may be because i grew up with a megadrive as opposed to a nes, but i never understood why Mario was popular. I really don't like those games, and beyond the obvious brilliance of the level design, the mechanics (you have to JUMP on badguys? wtf?) and the strange choice of lead character (an italian plumber?) leave a lot to be desired. And i really don't care how many people think its great..it wont change my mind. There are far more deserving games in the past decade on the nintendo line of consoles than Mario Galaxy. Saying that by missing Mario games you're missing some of the greatest moments in gaming is also b******s.
I have been playing games for going on 18 years, I'm 25 and I've played a hell of a lot of games...some of them being Mario games. In fact the first game i remember playing is Mario Bros on the Nes. At not point in time did i find myself marvelling at the games. Never.

If Galaxy didn't have Mario infront of it, people would marvel at the planet based design (seen in Ratchet and Clank) and the gravity changes....and thats it.

RE4, Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness, Battalion Wars, Fire Emblem Shadow of the Dragon, Trauma Centre, Elite Beat Agents....there are tons of better games.

But this is just an opinion, as you have your own. I just think it's short sighted to give it to a passable game that did very little to change the template.

Personally, I'd classify any game showing unnecessary breast as rather immature.

Thirded,

Thirded,

Fair enough. However 99.999% of those that criticise Mario and Nintendo in general are far less mature than those that enjoy the games.

I would point out that the Jump on enemies mechanic is also present in Sonic and many other games too.

Thats an assumption, and i do not deny that its present in other games too...nevertheless its a stupid mechanic. Otherwise, thanks for not ripping my head off for not liking Mario Smile

edit: dont get me wrong, i love Nintendo and my DS very much....i just don't like mario in the slightest.

Well you are perfectly entitled to dislike Mario games. The point is that many criticise mario for it being colourful, which in my opinion is not exactly a great reason for disliking a game (most that say this also have never played the game). There are many games that I do not like but are not necessarily poor games. However I do have a wide taste and give most games a go. What I can't stand is the general point of view that Mario is a childs game. I would like to see most of those that say this to attempt to complete on fully. They are generally harder than most of the so called "mature games".
leefear1 on 19 Jan '10
Sure, Mario is hardly casual gaming in the sense of difficulty. Its not Ninja Gaiden Black hard mode either.
It's far from being a child's game...it just happens to be a game that most children play. I never said it was a child's game, just that most children that play it would hopefully not have played RE4 etc and thus had very little to compare it too. I agree however it would be pointless to criticise mario for being colourful..it is what it is, and what it does it does very well...I just don't think that it deserves this 'award'. I have played it, and many other mario games...they just don't click with me.

Well RE4 wii is still close in my list anyway. Fantastic game and would not have complained if it had taken number 1 spot. I say the wii version as I think its controls were better than the GC version.

Surprise, surprise more bitching from mario fanboys who can't handle other people's opinions. Unfortunately for me I did play Mario Galaxy and once again found myself saying "IT'S THE SAME DAMN THING!"

I'm not attacking anybody for liking Mario galaxy, in fact I'm not attacking anyone at all, but no one can deny that Mario games are just the same damn thing over and over and over again.

Bitch and moan and flame and rant all you want but it's the truth. It wouldn't surprise me if even the people who make Mario would say the same thing. And now we're to get Mario galaxy 2? same thing diferent year and you all know it. But it wont stop you bitching and crying when someone like me says the truth you obviously cant handle.

As for "intelligent debate" like some idiot commented I'll bother with intelligent debate when you grow the hell up and stop attacking people for their opinion loser. Come and look at my games anyday of the week and you'll see a wide assortment. In fact I'll even go as far as to say some of the games I've got are franchises and are like Mario when they're essentially the same game over and over again (Ratchet and clank, tomb raider etc)

Aagain flame, bitch, moan I couldn't give a toss.

If you read the posts properly I have actually not attacked anyone that legitimately does not like mario games etc. Maybe read before you post next time.

I am also no fanboy and have owned many consoles from many companies over the 29 years that I have been gaming.

Unfortunately many games are just the same rehashes. Bayonetta (which i love by the way) is essentially devil may cry with a witch, practically every FPS is a rehash and we have fifa rehash every year at least! There are very few games that are not a rehash to some degree. Mario Galaxy is indeed similar in many ways to sunshine and 64. It however gets the gameplay spot on which is something that can't be said for most games today.
leefear1 on 19 Jan '10
I wasn't talking to you, and as I never explicity mentioned you or anything you posted I dont know why you'd get that idea.

BUT

I will agree with you on your basic point, I enjoyed Bayonetta (indeed much like DMC) while I didn't like darksiders (indeed a rip of zelda and god of war)

Doh!

Embarassed

I’d still be more tempted to plump for Metroid Prime in all honesty though – although I’ll admit that it’s more down to my individual love of shooters and the absolutely brilliant atmosphere the game created...

Twas one of the few relaxing shooters I've played! Managed to be aesthetically pleasing without having to resort to powerhouse graphical tricks - I think it was the immersive world and sense of an ecosystem...

In fact, somebody should explain this concept to Paradaz and the other pc fanboys who seem to think that aesthetics = graphics. Confused
