Brink dev cites COD and Quake as 'classic' level designs

Both titles regarded as inspiration across industry, says Splash Damage exec
A lead designer on Bethesda shooter Brink has revealed which titles are most lauded across the development industry for their 'classic' level design - with COD 4 and Quake getting special mentions.

Speaking to PC Format (via TechRadar), Splash Damage's Neil Alphonso said that both FPS titles contained special elements - but that in recent years, the list of 'classic' designs had "gotten pretty large".

Alphonso commented: "The first levels that always come into my mind are 'The Dark Zone' and 'The Bad Place' from the original Quake (DM4 and DM6, respectively), as they played a huge role in my decision to pursue a career in the games industry.

"A more recent single player focused example is the outstanding 'All Ghillied Up' for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, a level in which you re-enact a past mission of your hard-nosed CO.

"All three of those levels would certainly qualify as classics among level designers, but by now that list has gotten pretty large."

Quake I can vouch. I played it a lot in my early teens (despite age ratings!). It has a strong atmosphere which still stands ground, and interesting selection of enemies such as the Feind. I remember a corridor in the third set of levels where a Feind leaped the whole distance and that was quite a shock. The game's use of lighting is very effective, and the atmopshere felt very heavy by the time you get halfway through the fourth set of levels, partly because of the enemy placements.
