GT5 "90% complete" - Yamauchi

That'll be why there's no release date for it then...
Gran Turismo 5 creator Kazunori Yamauchi has said that the long-delayed, yet massively anticipated PS3 racer, is 90 percent complete. Yep, it's still not finished.

Speaking to USA Today at last week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Yamauchi explained that, "About 90% of the game is done. We are just working on the last 10% and polishing up everything."

There's still no release date fo the game. Sony told us that the reported delay of Gran Turismo 5 is "only applicable for the Japanese market" - the only territory where the game had been given an official date. Make of that what you will.

Although its not a major problem for a racing game fan as I have Forza which is still not out of the disc tray, I would like to play this soon and its starting to grate.

I know perfection takes time but a few little flaws like Forza 3's didn't spoil it or stop it from being one of the greatest games of all time. Plus they've sorted my issues out with patches since.

Come on PD I want more racing, my poor PS3 is being neglected.

if the dev cant meet a release date over and over, what else can't they do. i suspect this to be a major flop of the most epic proportions.

whats the next best racing game for the ps3, anyone? im after something fun, good online multiplayer, plenty of tracks and options.. i havent bought a racing game yet for ps3 and have only really played 'race' mode on GTA which ive really enjoyed! Any advice, anyone?
Tobal on 18 Jan '10
Somebody give them a job lot of Pledge so they can get the polishing done ASAP Rolling Eyes

Come on PD, GT5 has been in development for nigh-on 6 years now, get the damn thing out the door already.
captain savaloy on 18 Jan '10
Motorstorm Pacific Rift? It's a bit unbalanced but it's epic fun. It's the only game I've ever played where crashing was fun.

imo Burnout Paradise is your best bet, but of course this isn't a ps3 exclusive so if you already have it for the 360 than yh maybe Pacific Rift after that.

But if you haven't played Burnout than your in for a treat. It's fast, mental and tons of fun! The only problem is of course is that it's an open map, not everyone likes that in a racing game. Also because it's such a big map, it can take a long while to learn all the roads.

I remember statement from him a month ago or so, when he said that gt5 is finished and could be released, but it's not due to marketing problems.
minimalistic on 18 Jan '10
Rapidly going off GT5. The whole delay thing is starting to smack of corporate interference. First it's finished then it isn't, now there are production issues. More like some focus group has declared that 'the market isn't right just yet' and it should be put back. I also wish they'd stop releasing those bloody videos of car replays with the camera swooping round everywhere. We know how good a modelled car can look - stop farting around get it in the shops!
And while I'm on a rant/roll, why do they keep rattling on about how many cars, tracks etc one game has over another? Looks good on paper but realistically how many cars are actually useable or good to drive? Tracks the same. I don't think a distinctive individual track can be classed as such if it's just a cut-down version of another, no matter how many times they do it.

90%, eh?

If my maths is correct (5 years development, so 1 year is 20%), that means another 6 months of development for GT5.

That means July/August.

Without meaning to p**s on your chips some more, that’d just be the game finished, it would be another month or two after that until the game was actually on shop shelves unfortunately.

Didn’t he say some time ago that the game was finished though? I could’ve sworn he had said that and they could release it anytime they wanted, so what the hell has happened in between now and then?

What are they not telling us here? Seriously, something is going on that we don't know about.

Wrong. There has only ever been one release date that Sony or PD have ever given, and that was March 2010 in Japan.
All other dates have been people guessing.

Also, why on earth would you think this is going to be a flop? Did you not play GT5-Prolouge? Becuase the that sold 1.5 million units more than Forza 3. SO I guess Forza 3 was a flop too was it?
only_777 on 18 Jan '10
I think this game's biggest failing will be the emphasis on providing too many cars. Like Gran Turismo 4 with its Ford Model T. The point is?

I remember playing PGR3 and forcing everyone to use the DeLorean and saying 5 laps on the longest New York loop. After one lap we were all bored because the cars were just too slow to be any fun. I fear the same thing will be the case with 400-500 of the cars that they have modelled.

Great attention to detail maybe, but when it takes so long to model and texture each individual car while trying to match the physics of all those cars is commendable, it's short sighted to include so many when realistically only a few hundred will be utilised.

When a 6-7 year development time would traditionally be longer than the lifespan of a games console it would be better if you had a choice selection of cars that are potentially useful in a racing sense than making sure you get a Citroen C1 in the mix alongside a host of Ferraris because ultimately we can all afford to drive the Citroen in real life, but not the Ferrari which is part of the reason most of us play racers in the first place.

5 Years to get to 90%. Stands to reason its at least 6 months away then. 10% of 5 years is 6 months.

Forza 3 isn't a costly demo and is still selling well. Currently in the Top 10 in the UK.

So Forza 3 is far from done sales wise.

Well, maybe Amazons release date of September 2010 is pretty spot-on then?

I can understand why Sony want to delay the release further (Halo REACH), but it is frustrating.

See if it's 90% done, why haven't we got a complete feature list yet? Fair enough, we have more cars than we could shake a thoroughly k**bbly stick at and a fair few tracks as well, but what about the other stuff?

The WRC content hasn't even been talked about yet, no official announcements of tracks or anything yet. We've not had any screenshots of off-road driving at all.

I don't really care if there's a career mode or whatever, as long as the racing model works. Anything else is icing on the cake. But announcing you've got licenses for something and then not expanding on that is pointless.
Dajmin on 18 Jan '10
I seem to remember them saying about 3 months ago that the game was finished and that they could release it any time they wanted, now they say it's 90% complete, have they decided at the last minute to include spaceships in it or something?, or maybe for added realism in the Nascar sections they decided to add a crowd of 10000 beer swilling red necks.

I want this game........bad, but the wait is getting ridiculous now.

Unfortunately, PD have always been secretive until the last minute. However, there is a feature list, of sorts, doing the rounds:

My advice?

I think we should all forget about GT5 until the fecker is on the shop floor.

Think all this 3D guffs whats happened now mate. I brought a PS3 when it was bundled with prologue as i thought it was GT5 lol. Felt rather ripped off but was still going to get GT5 when it came out but it has been soo long i have no desire to even play it now. Think unless this is the mother of all driving games by a country mile it will be slated beyond belief for its stupidly long production time.

Itll be abit like a girl youve had a crush on for so long,if you miss your window of opportunity your doomed to just end up friends. PD should of pulled me 2 years ago Laughing

There's too much other goodness on the horizon now for me to be excited by this anymore. Maybe that's the reason it's delayed again.

It's taken so long the anticipation for it has dwindled to nothing for me. I'll pick it up at some point but not on day 1 - I've had my racing fix with Forza.

I'm sure it'll be good when it comes out, but meh.
Currychips on 18 Jan '10
Im suprised alto of people havent mentioned Wipeout as the PS3's best racing game, and at a budget price to - its quite something if u need ur speed fix, makes everything else out there feel pedestrian.

As already said, 10% away is still a lot of work. That'll be about 4-6 months away then. Rolling Eyes Thanks for that, dickhead.

Hey Mark, i take it you and yer little one have the same routine as me and my daughters, what with the little nod to Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, ( hot dog hot dog hot diggety dog), made me and the wife chuckle and realise it's not only us lol.
As for GT5, still looking forward to it but i must admit it's getting a little tedious waiting on it.
msxmre on 18 Jan '10
This is more than likely the testing and debugging, hopefully this takes about a month then they can master it and send it to press, so by summer time we should be looking forward to GT5. Till then onward with GoW3 and everything else I can fit into my system.
