Halo: Reach takes series to a 'new level' - Microsoft

Title can be 2010's biggest game of any console, publisher tells CVG
Halo: Reach can outsell the likes of God Of War III and Call Of Duty 7 to be 2010's biggest game on all formats, Microsoft has told CVG.

The platform holder told us today that the game takes the Halo series to an "entirely new level" - and that it is confident it will attract new players to the franchise.

Director of Xbox marketing Stephen McGill said:

"It's an exciting time for Halo fans and we're thrilled by the response from trailer shown at the VGAs last month which was phenomenal.

"Our hope for Halo: Reach is to be the biggest title of 2010 not only for Xbox, but across all platforms - a forecast which has been mirrored by industry professionals.

"Halo: Reach takes the legacy of Halo's rich multiplayer gameplay to an entirely new level, delivering experiences that we think old and new players alike will enjoy for years to come.

"The Halo franchise is an entertainment phenomenon comprised of best-selling novels, collectibles, industry acclaimed anime and genre-defining games that have already sold more than 30 million units worldwide."

halo died when halo 3 and odst were released. Medal of honor is going to p**s on its grave, and do a massive turd on call of dutys aswell.

altitude2k on 15 Jan '10
i dont understand the statement. yes, it can be the biggest game of 2010, but everyone knows that you cant dismiss the possibility. its not like they even said it would be, but that it could.

Halo as a franchise is massive, so it having gargantuan sales is more or less a given from the start.
i just hopes it lives up to be all that it can.

and the new MoH wont p**s on anything.

It's either going to be the dog's b******s or there just hyping it up to be the dog's b******s!

Thing is, the Halo games might not have brought anything revolutionary to the table for a while, but they're still fun to play. They put you in a role and tell you a story and I've got no problem with that. I'd rather something was good at what it knows than fails trying to be unique.
Dajmin on 15 Jan '10
MS must be really crapping their pants over God of war 3 and GT5 if they can't stop talking about Halo Reach that isn't out for another 11 months.
CelticSpectre on 15 Jan '10
As a single console exclusive there is no way it will sell better than MW2. It's a damn shame, but that's just a fact.

It may very well sell better than MW2 did on the 360, though.

EDIT: Also, CVG, you need to stop using this Halo Wars picture for Reach news Wink

Is that so you can stay up all night playing it when the game comes out?

Now as much as I love Halo, I am getting a little tired of hearing the exact same thing over and over, this has already been said, no need to say it again, truthful or not as it may turn out to be it is only being a charlie big b******s and as such merely guesswork.

Plus it puts far too much expectation on a game that will already have the weight of the world on it's shoulders come the release date.

Anyway, bring on the beta.

The sad thing is, he genuinely finds it funny. Mind you, his cracks at the PS3 when he called himself 'EnglishShmuppet' weren't funny either - now he's turned the tables, it's just pathetic.

The other thing is that he accused StoneCold of having a 'humour bypass' in another thread when he failed to find anything funny about some other cretinous attempt at humour he'd made.

Seriously f***yboy - don't ever try standup.

Modern Warfare 2 had a hell of a lot of hype generated and it sold shed loads. This is the same scenario, so I expect Halo Reach to do the same tbh. If the game is not up to the hype, it won't matter if the sales are super high. Again, look at Modern Warfare 2.
kimoak on 15 Jan '10
I'm looking forward to Reach. Not really playing much on the noisy box at the moment, but Halo3 was the first multiplayer game that I really enjoyed. A bit of hype doesn't hurt.

You've just described every game since space invaders and pong.

Not EVERY game. Tetris and Bejeweled don't have a story Razz
But it's true enough, you can't really say it fails as a game because it does the game parts just fine. You're made to be a superhero (more or less) and you save the day (more or less).

Whether the story is more or less interesting than another franchise is all down to the individual. I don't like Oblivion or Fallout but I can't say that makes them crap.

Sorry, I needed to do something to counter the anti-Halo-fanboy-ism on here Smile

Of all the thousands of examples you could've chosen to illustrate your point, you chose Pong - one of few games in existence with no story whatsoever.

Not owning an x-box so I never completed Halo 1 or 2. I had a 360 a few years back and my friends were all getting excited saying I HAD to buy Halo 3..I did and was bitterly disappointing. The online was OK but I only play games online casually, i'm more of a campaign gamer.

Next came ODST, friends again said this would be the shet, it was just as bad as Halo 3.

My conclusion? Halo is for fanboys of the series only, it does nothing the best.

Good luck!

How exactly is this news? It's the same thing they said a few days ago, just now with the added twist of it being proclaimed biggest of all platforms. I thought that's what they were implying last time.

Meh, I've played FPS's for years- Halo is the one I find both intriguing (in its story) and balls to the wall fun (with gameplay). There is of course the chance that with taking a different approach to the games, something will go horribly wrong- but this is Bungie so I'm confident it'll be great.

Mass Effect 2 is still my most wanted at the moment- but I'm sure Halo will be a day one purchase for me- all the other games have been Very Happy

This is what kills good games for many. Insane hype like this. I hate it when publishers hype their games to an insane level. We know Halo will sell cause it's Halo but still...Once your caught in that hype the game will never feel as good as you want or expected cause of idiots like that.
Del-007 on 15 Jan '10
Building up all this hype and claiming its going to be better than this and better than that, is going to be a bad thing.

And I swear its always an 1st party 360 title, you never see Ninty/Sony saying so and so is going to be GOTY, so and so is going to sell more than anything else out there.

Sorry MS but God Of War 3 and Zelda Wii is more exciting than another Halo, don't care how much you've steppd it up.

I have to say that for new games that I am excited about, for me the hype is all part of the fun. You're right in that if the game is actually not very good then it's a massive let down - much like I felt with MW2. However, I have yet to be disappointed with a Halo game despite the exposure, so I'm quite happy to revel in the hype.

My thoughts exactly. And yes, this and CoD get the biggest hype for what are in the end, average FPS games. And like someone said, this game is more for the fanboys
JuiKuen on 15 Jan '10
Also, M$ need Halo more than anything else. None of their other franchises have such big sales as this one. While its obvious Nintendo wouldn't have got as far over the years without Mario, Zelda and Pokemon, they have other franchises that have also sold well and have new stuff like their Wii series line.

And Sony have their own established franchises and are pushing new ones like Uncharted and games like The Last Guardian

To me, M$ don't have that type of imagination or creativity and hence, are pushing Halo in this type of manner and come out with stupid statements like this. The fact that they're trying to emulate Nintendo's success and Sony's ideas (avatars, NATAL BEING EYETOY+, the marketing - ads within junk like that Idol show) shows this

MrPirtniw on 15 Jan '10
Look, we’re never going to agree on this, some of us (correct, I might add) love Halo because it’s seven shades of fantastic entertainment.

The rest of you (sad, deluded, and black hearted individuals) don’t like it and, many years in the future, will probably die sad and alone, whimpering to yourself as you clasp other forgotten and less successful idols to your chests.

So let’s just leave it and all concentrate on helping me to buy a laptop. After years of using my girlfriends for my own personal needs it’s now knackered and I’m going to get one, budget of up to about £450…help a brother out brothers from some other mothers.

Are you claiming avatars were Sony's idea? Jesus, you're a blinkered soul aren't you! And I hardly think Microsoft need lessons in Marketing from anyone else, or have you never seen an advert from them? Every ten minutes? On TV? Cinema? Magazines? Internet? Outdoor?

Oh and to add, they all copy each other, it's called beeeezneeeeeez, capiche?
Conkers on 15 Jan '10
No Conkers, I'm not. Fair do, I didn't make that bit clear enough. What I meant was the idea for Natal is more like the EyeToy. I'll go back to amend that...

As for their marketing, you clearly missed what I mean there and I'll let you stew on it.

And I wouldn't say Nintendo really copy anyone in terms of gaming companies. Oh no! They used memory cards and DVDs! That's hardly a gaming revolution now is it?

Wait. They were being serious, weren't they? Well maybe some people might, but I doubt it will come across as the greatest thing since sliced bread for many casual and "hardcore" gamers. Those individuals whom are already on the verge of buying a PS3 may be more easily settled in to their purchasing decision by seeing an appealing bundled package, and for some "MAG" may be just the thing they are drawn to. That goes for all of the three big console makers though albeit with different games.

Sometimes a game does actually manage to live up to massive hype. "Dragon Age: Origins" for example was everything and even more than I expected, and BioWare/EA certainly did hype up that game. What a gem it is too, IMO!

Hm. Maybe if we are strictly speaking of MS's gaming division. What MS really needs more than that is for its OS division to be successful along with the professional server business. Don't worry, on the OS front MS sits comfortably at some 90% of the market. Wink

Remove the vivid colour parts, insert brown, grey and a bit dab, add sluggish movement control, a run-of-the-mill story and faceless stormtroopers that come a-dozen-a-pop and you've pretty much described "Killzone 2" and the behaviour of many PS3 owners.

Spoken like a true MS fanboy.

Whilst far from perfect, Killzone 2 was recieved very well critically, certainly better than ODST, for example.

But still not as well recieved by critics as Halo, Halo 2 and Halo 3.

Yeah, your right. It's a good job Uncharted 2 made up for that injustice, eh?

...Fair enough, bash MS all ya like- just don't forget to bash Sony and (to a lesser degree) Nintendo too. They're equally greedy so they'll only get jealous.

Oh, I'd bash Sony and Nintendo alright, for not treating MS with the same total lack of respect.

I think you'd just bash them off, you big k**bber.

So what about God Of War then Mark? Do you now not believe it is an oil pointing come to life? Or the must have game of 2010? What about MAG, will it not sell systems, is it not the biggest baddest shooter of them all? What about Gran Turismo 5, do not believe that the demo released does not reflect in any way the finished product which will be the most amazing thing ever?

I don’t defend Halo like a love(d) child, it does annoy me slightly when people knock it continuously (much against my better judgement) but I can’t help it. Why? Because I had a massive amount of fun playing 2 and 3 online, and I’ve honestly enjoyed all three of them without having been bought into the hype trains (as much as I can consciously do anyway). It was the game for me that opened up online multiplayer, something I would have never done, and my (real) friends and I still play it regularly.

Hype happens, everyone does it, whether you allow yourself to get carried away with it is one thing, blind hatred is another.

Why has no one helped me with laptops? You all hate me don’t you, just because I like Halo.

I'm a Halo fan but I was pretty bemused by ODST. I had stated a few times before it came out that I thought it was an overpriced expansion pack.

It's that kind of greed that will sully the franchise in the end, they have to watch that as any more mishaps like that will seriously dampen my enthusiasm for more Halo.

ODST may have done more bad than good, if it had just been what it was intended: DLC, then it would have been more beneficial.

Regardless, I'm still hyped for Reach, I think that it will be a great game.
ledickolas on 15 Jan '10
While I don't doubt it'll be the best Halo game released so far in the series, all this shit about it being the biggest and best selling game of 2010 and outselling every other game on every other platform is just rubbish. COD7 will sell more than Halo, so already it's 2nd best. Then you have GOW3, so 3rd best, then Gran Turismo 5, so 4th best, etc etc.

Obviously it will be one of the top sellers this year, but CoD is a monster, even if it is Treyarch's turn this year! Multi-platform games are selling good on PS3 now, so CoD 7 could sell 6 mill at least on both platforms.

The others are GT5 and GoW 3, but I'm less sure about them breaking the 10 million mark this year, maybe in 2011.

Whilst far from perfect, Killzone 2 was recieved very well critically, certainly better than ODST, for example.

Tut, tut Mark. I would have thought that by now it has been well established that if I'm a fanboy of any gaming platform it is the PC. Speaking of being a fanboy though, that's a moniker you can't hide from regardless of what you might claim in regards to the PS3. You certainly go out of your way to defend it while taking cheap potshots at those whom dare disagree with what the PS3 hive mind has deemed to be the greatest of great games the way a fanboy would. Whether or not you read the official Xbox magazine does not make one whit of difference in that regards.

As for "Killzone 2" it didn't look bad from a graphics perspective, but from what I saw of the game play there was nothing new or particularly exciting about it. Some might say the same about "Halo" though I think there are sound arguments that while it isn't original what it does with the FPS genre it does just about sublimely. I was not particularly impressed with "ODST"; it seemed to be more of an expansion pack sold at full RRP which is why I didn't buy it.

"CoD 7"? That Vietnam themed game in development is still so far off the radar that there is no way to back-up the claim that it will be the best selling game to come for years. I do hope Treyarch make a solid experience out of it though as there aren't that many Vietnam themed games, and even less that are decent.

Reach better be what's so proclaimed; Halo 3 was a last-gen performance perfected this gen, and ODST was a step in the right direction, if somewhat underworked. More of the effort found from ODST in terms of gameplay, more interaction with the enviroment and a beleiveable human environment for once might be nice.

True dat.
I still maintain that Uncharted 2 looks amazing, and remains one of only two exclusives on the PS3 to date that I would buy (the other being Uncharted Wink).
Heavy Rain looks cool, and I played and LOVED Faranheit, not to mention Shenmue, which Heavy Rain looks like it could be a bizarre love child of. It could also be pretentious toss too, guess we'll have to wait and see.

I know nothing of The Last Guardian though. What is it? I see it being mentioned loads as one of the Sonys big guns this year.

You have to try the train section on Uncharted 2, it's bloody fantastic. I've Heavy Rain preordered now on the strengh of the OPM review I read the other day. I've only seen a few preview videos of Last Guardian. Other than that I know very little about it. Great games on the way for both systems. Hell I'm even considering upgrading to an Elite for Reach. As an Xbox user (no, not fan any more), I have to say I'm with the Playstation fanboys on this news.

What a crock of sh*t, making claims like that about another Halo game. I won't reserve my hatred for marketing departments to just the Halo boys, I have equal contempt for all of them.

How insulting to all of us whether we're fans of Halo, Xbox, Sony or just gaming in general... that they actually believe the crap they spew out will affect sales or our opinions. I have absolutely no doubt 99% of those who end up purchasing this game already know they're going to. And the last one percent will be swayed by videos, images or reviews even. It's absolutely astonishing how dumb marketing people assume gamers are when they make statements like this.

Lets let the reviews decide.

Problem with that is that reviews where Halo is concerned tend to be totally partizan and unreliable (The previously level-headed Edge is the best example of this). I can't stand FPS's but am a big fan of the Halo games, mainly due to the quality of the 1st one, but I REALLY wish MS would just shut the f**k up about them. All the hype just creates more haters and detracts from what is a great series, the best pure FPS in my opinion.
svensk101 on 16 Jan '10
Jesus, all the guy said was it was 'our hope'. A PR man bigged up his product wow! What was he supposed to say in an interview, "no I think it will sell nothing, the next mirror's edge in fact"

Sickens me that you get a 50+ rant about this, true gamers should be able to appreciate games regardless of what system they are on. All this halo bashing, fair do's if you don't like it, but you have to appreciate it's a much loved title for many. MS has quite a few exclusive quality titles halo, gears, crackdown, left 4 dead, shadow complex, virtual on - sure their are more. So too has PS3 - uncharted, metal gear, killzone etc....

As Gamers you must be able to appreciate, there are good games on either side of the fence.

By the way I have a PS3, used to have an xbox - PS3 is a superior machine to me, however I miss the live aspect, all my friends (real ones!) are still on there and the community on psn, seems a bit souless.

The Warthog controls extremely well. If you play enough multiplayer you would see that the Warthog is incredibly manoeuvrable. If you have the skill to use the handbrake/slide for it you can 180 turn without stopping the vehicle.

Not sure Microsoft has to worry about a lack of games - as games get announced throughout the year I am quite happy!

Yeah man, that's my point I want to enjoy the gears game as much as the next uncharted game. Or Halo AND Modnation Racers. Sony made consoles fashionable with the ps one (i remember adverts that didn't actually show any games!) and this is a bad thing, made a lot of people loyal to consoles, why?

Back in the day it was megadrive vs SNES, but I'm not that stubborn to be able to enjoy sonic and mario for different reasons.

I would like a game with Halos first action heavy gameplay combat mixed with Halo 2s story telling capabilities and cinematics.
