During last night's Cleveland Cavaliers victory over the Knicks, the crowd at Madison Square Garden gave a "swelling ovation" for Cavaliers star LeBron James, the subject of rumors about a 2010 trade to New York. James said of the ovation, "It's humbling to have fans ... in the mecca of basketball." more ›

Despite the police chief involved with the case calling it a "coverup," Isiah Thomas and his family are still sticking to the story that he did not accidentally overdose on sleeping pills Friday, but that an ambulance was only called to treat his daughter's fainting after a dizzy spell. Harrison Police Chief David Hall again made the situation clear to reporters saying, "It wasn't his daughter - and why they're throwing her under the bus is beyond my ability to understand." While the former Knicks coach had nothing to say yesterday, his 20-year-old son Joshua was backing up his father's story and calling the police chief's comments "disrespectful." Meanwhile the Post says that Isiah has had a harsh fall since his demotion by the Knicks, describing him as "steeped in sadness and loneliness...dreaming that one day all those who chanted "Fire Isiah!" would be forced to eat their words." more ›

According to reports, Mike D’Antoni has agreed to become the next coach of the Knicks. D’Antoni will receive a four-year/$24-million deal to move from Phoenix where he led the Suns to 50+ wins in every full season he coached. more ›

Some L.A. Lakers fan (we assume) came up with a brilliant plan to psych out Phoenix Suns guard Leandro Barbosa last week. Barbosa fell victim to a hoax where his hotel gave him a message saying that Suns GM Steve Kerr wanted to meet him to discuss a trade to the New York Knicks. Jeez, that's maybe the meanest prank call we've ever heard! more ›

The New York Knicks are the most entertaining team in the NBA. Not because of the team's play on the court, but because of the soap-opera-like drama that takes place off the court. During Knicks practice yesterday, Isiah Thomas said that he's not walking away from the team he created. "If there's one thing that I hope all of you know about me, or will learn about me, I fight 'til I die. It's not... more ›

If CBS News Writers Strike, Democrats Will Nix Debate Several presidential candidates - Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and Bill Richardson -have announced their intentions not to cross picket lines for a debate sponsored by CBS News on December 10th. The Writers Guild of America announced earlier this week that its members who work for the network’s television and radio operations at both the national and local level have authorized a strike vote. The members have... more ›

Sacramento 123 Knicks 118 (2OT’s); You weren’t dreaming, that really was Stephon Marbury playing defense. Marbury didn’t start, but he had a nice game off the bench as Isiah went to a three-guard lineup in the fourth quarter. With Crawford and Robinson sharing the point, Marbury took over at the two and did well. Eddy Curry had a huge game with 27 points including a game-tying rebound and layup with 10 seconds left in regulation,... more ›

Bad news is staggering down from Young Frankenstein’s extravagant Broadway castle: When critics begin gathering with pitchforks and torches next weekend, the show’s star, Roger Bart (he plays the titular role Gene Wilder made famous in the film), may be benched with a herniated disc. A monstrous problem indeed, as the part demands extensive dancing, and according to Michael Riedel, Mel Brooks is panicking. (Isn’t Larry David available?) A little birdy tells Riedel: "One scenario has his doctor pumping him with cortisone so he can play the critics' performances and opening night, then take time off to heal. But that, as any dancer will tell you, is extremely risky." more ›

Yes, it appeared that Dwight Howard committed a goaltending violation on Stephon Marbury’s subsequent drive, but Nelson came down and hit another 3, part of the 10-2 run the Magic used to seal the game. more ›

“This is a great day for the New York Knicks and our fans. Larry Brown is not just one of the best coaches in the NBA today, but in its history. He has made every team he has ever coached a winner, with a legendary approach to teaching and motivating his players. His value to us as a franchise at this time is immeasurable.” more ›

It took six tries, but Larry Brown finally has his first win as the head coach of the New York Knicks. Last night, the Knicks held off the Sacramento Kings to win 105-95. Despite leading for 19 points in the first-half, the Knicks let the Kings back into the game in the 3rd quarter. Despite letting the Kings cut the lead to 6, the Knicks didn't fold up shop like they have so many times this season. more ›

Larry Brown still longs for his first win as the head coach of the New York Knicks. At 0-5, it would be nice if that win would come sooner than later. Last night, the Knicks came mighty close against the Golden State Warriors, but lost the game in the final minute, 86-84. Despite the fact that the Knicks came out to play in the first quarter (ha, we're so funny), ending the first period of play with a 10 point lead, they fell short. The Knicks even led by 13 at one point and held the lead for more than half the game (33 minutes). It's like they can't buy a break. more ›

So, on the cover of yesterday's NY Times sports section was this huge picture of New Jersey Nets small forward Richard Jefferson (RJ!) hugging point guard Zoran Planinic after a third quarter shot against the Utah Jazz, and we thought to ourselves, "This is some hug...not that there's anything wrong with that." But these are exciting times for Nets, as exciting as being on top of the Atlantic Division five games into the season can be and cross-the-Hudson and possible cross-the-East River rival New York Knicks sucking. Jefferson has been doing well this season, and we can only hope that he, Vince Carter, and Jason Kidd stay healthy. And that Nenad Krstic can continue to score. In the meantime, Gothamist will wonder how many children were frightened by this Jason Kidd Jox Box. more ›

In recent years, Houston was booed at Madison Square Garden after signing a six-year, $100.4 million contract, but he never let the fans get him down, "The fans of New York were unbelievable. I want to thank the fans for not only supporting me, but challenging me." The Times reports that Houston will remain with the Knicks in some capacity, which has yet to be announced. more ›

Even though the season's winding down, the New York Knicks are taking advantage of spring fever and organizing another Singles Night at Madison Square Garden. After a successful event earlier this year, Gothamist is teaming up with the Knicks again for an evening of mixing and mingling before, during and after a game against the Atlanta Hawks on April 17. more ›

And to make things interesting, if you and someone you hit it off with decide to go out again, you could win a Valentine's Day trip to Philadelphia to see the Knicks play the 76ers. more ›

As if America didn’t have enough going on today, the 2004/2005 NBA season kicks off tonight with a doubleheader on TNT (how’s that for some election coverage counter programming?). The local teams don’t get started until tomorrow when the rebuilt Nets will take on Shaquille O’Neal and the Miami Heat at the Meadowlands and the Knicks travel to the Twin Cities to take on last year’s MVP and the Twolves. Both the Knicks and Nets will start the season with depleted rosters. Jason Kidd and Allan Houston will start the season on the inured list, ensuring they will miss at least the first five games of the season. more ›

A NY director to look out for is Joshua Marston, whose Maria Full of Grace is one of the better films out there. And for a coastal flip (Gothamist getting ready for some sun, L.A. style), see Collateral for a swooning look at L.A. evening drive time.

WFAN was first to report the departure of Marv Albert, they also reported that as soon as the negotiations had started to breakdown with Marv and the Garden. Marv called the YES network to position himself for the Nets play-by-play broadcasting job. The position is currently held by Ian Eagle, who has been doing play by play for the Nets for the past 6 years. more ›

Sure, Albert was biting the hand that fed him, but who is James Dolan kidding? Has he seen the Knicks of late? They deserve criticism. Leafing through the paper this morning, Gothamist was shocked, stunned, shaking our heads. But what do we know? All we know is that Knick broadcasts will not be the same. more ›

The Daily News thinks it could be "Knicks vs. the Nicknames" because of all the nicknames the Nets have: J-Kidd (Jason Kidd), R.J. (Richard Jefferson), K-Mart (Kenyon Martin), Debo (Rodney Rogers), Veal (Brian Scalabrine), Slim (?), A-Train (Aaron Williams). That got Gothamist thinking (we do that once in a while), "What would be some good "Knicknames" for the Knicks?" Prime Minister (Cezary Trybanski), Mr. Softee (Allan Houston), Cap Liability (Vin Baker), Mpolondo Mukamba Jean Jacque Wamutombo (Dikembe Mutombo), Mama Can't Spell (Anfernee Hardaway). more ›
