Wii 2 'not just a HD upgrade', says Reggie

Next Nintendo console to "add more capability", promises NOA big man
Nintendo America boss Reggie Fils-Aime says the next Nintendo console, Wii 2 if you like, will not simply be about introducing a HD upgrade, but adding more new capability to its gaming offerings.

"Over 26 million consumers have bought a Wii, so the consumer is saying that, for them, the quality of the visual is not nearly as important as the overall entertainment - the overall value of that experience and that's really what's propelled us," Fils-Aime said during a video interview with CNBC.

"In terms of what the future holds, we've gone on record to say that the next step for Nintendo in home console will not be to simply make it HD, but to add more and more capability," he added.

"We'll do that when we totally tapped out all of the experiences for the existing Wii and we are nowhere near doing that yet, so lots of ongoing opportunity for the consumer in the current generation."

I apprieciate what the Wii has done for gaming but it is a beginners console. You have to like simplistic gaming to use it for more than 30 mins at a time after the novelty has worn off. With terrible online gaming and community options and more periperals and shovelware that has ever gone before there is also a negative side to the Wii's effect on gaming. I find the best game on the Wii Dead Space extraction as they totally nailed the controls for that.

Now that Nintendo have made all the profit from the Wii please get back to making a universally good console that developers can get a proper grip off otherwise Sony and Microsoft's Natal and Wand thing will overshadow Nintendo again and no-one wants that

It's not a nintendo story without 2 things. 1. People complaining about the wii. 2. Reggies "what?" picture. Half way there already!

I would word it more as a great introduction to gaming and also a re-intraduction for those people that have been gaming for 31 years like I have been that got bored of gaming before the Wii came about. The industry got bigger, but it also got incredibly same old same old. I was ready to give up after the PS2/Cube/xbox. Now I am still gaming... for now at least Smile

I honestly wish they'd stop going on about what Nintendo is going to do next console wise. It's getting old having to hear Reggie and others repeat the same thing over. People wanting a new Nintendo home console must clearly see that its not going to happen any time soon. It's still outselling all other home consoles by a significant enough margin that I really doubt sales are going to drop off for the next year or two, maybe more. So either get used to the Wii being around or go play/talk about something else. And before someone says 'fanboy' I have all 3 home consoles and both handhelds and play each in equal quantities.

Nintendo will know what they need to make a good next console. They'll know what needs to be done graphically, control wise and online component wise to make an acceptable console in the next generation and they'll probably be first off the mark for release. Graphically, I think they'll take something like Uncharted 2 as a bench mark to work from or aim for. I think control wise, there'll be some carry over of the Wii-mote (so as not to alienate the new gaming crowd as Sony did with the PS3) and online, well hopefully they'll make it more manageable.

My recommendation? Slap in a spanking new GPU. Even a cheap lower mid-end GPU from today's hardware market would likely set the Wii on fire in regards to eye candy, and yes: Eye candy matters. Gaming is a visual medium. That said, eye candy does not a good game make on its own.
The_KFD_Case on 15 Jan '10
Even if it was just a "HD upgrade" it would be a fantastic improvement.
Desaima on 15 Jan '10
Although id love to see a nintendo console with cutting edge graphics, i dont see the point in them releasing it in the next 2 years.
The wii is still selling amazing well and has a strong line up of games for the sales to continue in 2010

Maybe nintendo could then release games like f zero, 1080, pikmin 3 mario sports titles with motion plus and online play, new ips etc in the next 2 years.(2 go with mario zelda metroid )

If nintendo released a system twice as powerful as the ps3 would you lot be saying that sony have to bring out a ps4 2 compete?
rip_it_up on 15 Jan '10
The next console needs to have hardware that can compete in terms of performance with the rival consoles at the time of release, not the rival consoles from the previous generation. It needs to have a hard-drive, preferably like the ps3 so that it can be cheaply and easily upgraded. Above all, Nintendo need to embrace the importance of online integration. For me the online services offered by Microsoft and Sony have been far more of a leap this generation than motion control. The user-generated content of Little Big Planet is a much better innovation than waggle, and it's a shame that it hasn't been seen as such. The Wii's online isn't even better than the original xbox.
piccadillio on 15 Jan '10
Some of these blog comments are such utter crap at times. It actually makes me angry to read what some people write "the Wii is a beginners console it doesnt take much skill to use or the online is crap" f@£% off, prat. Have you played Modern Warfare or Mario Kart online cuz they work perfectly and are loads of fun. How many FPS on the PS3 or Xbox allow you to fully customize your controls until they suit your needs. The Metroid Prime Trilogy is a materpiece even Resident Evil 4 plays better on the Wii than it did on the Gamecube.
What also makes me angry is half the people on here that call themselves hardcore gamers and probably only started playing games properly since last gen. Bunch of f@$k*!g kids.
Grow a brain.

that developers can get a proper grip off otherwise Sony and Microsoft's Natal and Wand thing will overshadow Nintendo again and no-one wants that

So how are the games on the other consoles 'complex'? All they are is more of the same with better graphics. I'd say the ideas used and some methods of play in Super Mario Galaxy are more 'complex' than any game on rival machines.

As for you other point, this is something that I've been thinking of for a while. If third party devs can't get the grip (read: stop being fu*king lazy) of making Wii games, how will they manage with Natal and the 'Wand'? Its not like the Wii is hard to develop for. Just a thought
JuiKuen on 15 Jan '10
If anything, the Wii's got the worst button layout of recent consoles, with only the Jaguar controller being any worse. When it comes to games of sophstication, I do wonder how long developers spend mapping controls to it. That makes me wonder if it's one of the reasons why so many titles aren't on the Wii, and so the 'maturity' of the console would appear weaker, given how game expectations are generally that sohpsticated games are mature games, whether or not this is really the case (press, up, X, Y right bumper, triangle, green, purple to jump!)

P.S. I like how dm_1782 shot himself in the foot.
Desaima on 16 Jan '10
And how did i shoot myself in the foot?????

If your talking about button layouts for Wii controls it works for me and plenty of other people. So wheres the problem????

I only have a Wii but I play my friends Xbox or PS3 without any problems either. ANyone who complains about controls being fiddily are either not used to playing games or are morons.
As I said before grow a brian.

the wii is a great console and has re designed gaming as a whole, future games gonna have natal/wand support because of the wii.

if the wii had the power of the ps3 and the online from the 360 then sony and ms would of been smashed this gen. thats all people say about the wii not enough power, crappy online.

yet all say its crap but if it had those 2 componants then what, it will dominate, o wait it did and still doing.

yeah it had crappy games but so does ps3/360 so it has party games so does ps3/360. it now gets netflix

if wii2hd comes out with power and online then little nintendy this gen will be the might ninty next gen like it always has been.

first of all i agree with most of you about the wii not being a very powerful system, but for me it wasnt this that made me turn to the 360.

i had a wii on release and i played some really amazing games for it such as twilight princess, red steel, Fire emblem radient dawn, super mario galaxy etc, and i really thought the wii was amazing(even with red steels not so good controls)but as time passed nintendo made more and more family games and neglected the RPG's, action etc. I have nothing against expanding the consumers but they should of been sure not to lose the old hardcore gamers that used love nintendo games allong with other microsoft/sony titles.

Thats my take on the subject :/

I agree completely with this statement. Although I do feel that Wii Fit and the likes are actually quite good in their own ways Nintendo should have also catered for gamers with the F Zeros, Pilotwings, Starfox etc etc. And there really needs to be more rpg's on and racing games on the system.
dm_1782 on 17 Jan '10
What games can we expect? Zelda (again) Super Mario Bros (again) Cooking Mama (again)WOW!! usuall tat updated (again) the Wii and Ds are a load of rubbish although they sell in the millions just shows how gullable and stupid people really are. Very Happy
walter120 on 17 Jan '10
Next console definitely needs to be a lot more powerful, considering Wii isn't much more powerful than Gamecube.
